Penang MACC denies ‘surrounding’ police station before arrests
The Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied a news report that its officers had surrounded the Ayer Itam police station in Georgetown before arresting five police officers in an operation early this morning.
“No such thing happened,” Penang MACC director M Samarajoo told Malaysiakini today.
Malay daily Harian Metro earlier today reported that MACC officers had “surrounded” the police station before proceeding to arrest five individuals at the police station at about 3am.
Samarajoo, meanwhile, said the five arrested under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes, were one corporal, three lance corporals and one constable.
“All suspects were arrested for soliciting and accepting bribes from the complainant.
“They were released on bail after their statements were recorded. I urge all parties to cooperate and report any acts of bribery by any parties,” Samarajoo said.

Woman constable, four policemen detained by MACC
Last updated on 17 April 2016 – 04:53pm
GEORGE TOWN: Four policemen and a woman constable from the Air Itam police station were detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday.
Penang MACC director Datuk M. Samarajoo said the policemen and the policewoman, aged between 20 and 40, were detained during a raid by the commission at the police station at 2.30am.
“One of the policemen is a corporal, while the others are lance corporal.
“They were detained for allegedly accepting money from a man to settle a car theft case,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
However, he said all of them, who are from the crime prevention branch, were released after MACC recorded their statements.
Samarajoo said the case was still under investigation and a few more witnesses will be called to assist investigation.
Timut Laut district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatash Wahid, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of the police personnel by MACC. — Bernama
