Najib: I’m patient, but beware if you cross the line

Dr Mahathir must have crossed Najib’s line many times but why does he sue Ling Liong Sik but not Mahathir?

FAKTA NYATA

Dr M: Weird that I can criticise but not Ling: Mahathir said with all the harsh criticisms against Najib, said…

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was confused why he, as a vocal critic of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, was allowed to criticize the latter but not former MCA Chief Ling Liong Sik.

In his affidavit in support for Ling’s application to strike out Najib’s lawsuit, the country’s longest serving premier said he’s a big critic of Najib for being a liar, corrupt and threatening Malaysia’s constitution and legal system, and he has called for him to resign.

“From what I observed, from the reply to Ling’s defence by the Prime Minister in the lawsuit, he accepted my sharp criticism was vital for his leadership.”

“Thus, it is weird that I have the freedom of speech (to criticize) but not Ling,” he said.

Mahathir added with all the harsh criticisms against Najib, said through his blog, he was not sued for defamation at all.

Najib: I’m patient, but beware if you cross the line

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak may be praised by many for his “patience”, a virtue which he himself admits to possess.

But underneath all the supposed composure and tolerance, Najib admits that he has his limits too, and will act if he is pushed too far.

Speaking at an event commemorating his 40 years involvement in politics, Najib explained that his ability to continue his work in politics may be due to his patience.

“But I want to say, I am patient, but I have my limits, too.

“Don’t think that you can do as you like. Don’t think that I won’t take action when you cross the line,” he warned.

Though Najib clarified that when he does take action, “it will be based on facts, the party and the government”.

While he did not name names, he was clearly referring to his critics within Umno.

Use proper channels to complain

After increased criticism of Najib’s handling of the 1MDB crisis, former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former minister Mohd Shafie Apdal were sacked from their respective posts last year.

Former Kedah MB Mukhriz Mahathir was also removed from his post as Menteri Besar and state liaison chief because of similar criticism of Najib.

Meanwhile, Umno rebel group Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Umno Malaysia (GKCM), on the other hand, is awaiting disciplinary action from the party due to its defiance of Najib.

Najib said there is “a way and a proper place” to reprimand.

“Don’t reprimand to destroy the party. And it’s enough that we already have enemies on the outside.

“We shouldn’t have enemies underneath our blankets, and have enemies in our pants, that’s even worse,” he said.

See what did not happen to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Najib Razak is selective in who he goes after. He hasn’t sued the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

What if Najib or 1MDB sued WSJ?

Why so unwilling to sue WSJ?

COMMENT We are all waiting for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s one major decision – to take the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) to court.

Although WSJ’s report has been most damaging to his reputation, as well as the reputation of Malaysia as a country, both Najib and 1MDB could only afford to skirt around the allegations made by WSJ instead of suing WSJ.

My question therefore, is why is Najib and 1MDB seemingly so unwilling to drag WSJ to court?

Perhaps, one hint lies with the answer given by WSJ’s finance editor Ken Brown, who told ABC News Australia on Feb 12 that his team has “loads of evidence to back up” their story.

Whereas Najib and his men’s story keeps changing over the identity of the donor, Brown maintains that the money funnelled into Najib’s personal accounts came from a “bunch of companies and bank accounts related to 1MDB.” Although we may give Najib the benefit of the doubt, Brown’s allegations certainly warrant an appropriate reaction since Najib’s international reputation is now at stake.

Yet, why do we see Najib and 1MDB dragging their feet despite being challenged to drag WSJ to court?

But, why did Najib not defend his case against WSJ? Never mind about winning or losing the case in court, but I can only speculate that there is this major fear that more evidence will be exposed in court if the case proceeded.

This would probably be even more damaging to Najib’s own reputation. We will never know what this “load of evidence” can do to Najib’s own credibility as the leader of this country until WSJ has a chance to expose it in court.

Even if Najib won the case, and WSJ has to pay huge sums in historically one of the biggest defamation cases, the world would have witnessed what could be one of the biggest scandals in Malaysia.
