KAJANG: When 16-year-old Lau Zi Wei heard of a massive accident right in front of her school, she had rushed to look at the carnage just like every other student.

But when she saw the shoes and school bag of her younger sister under the twisted metal, Zi Wei couldn’t help but collapse to her knees in disbelief and grief.

“She was my only sister. I told her all my secrets and she always talked to me. Sometimes we fought but she was my sister,” said the eldest of three siblings as she accompanied her parents to claim Zi Xin’s body at the Serdang Hospital yesterday.

Form One students Zi Xin and her best friend Wong Siow Xuen, both 13, were buying fried chicken outside SMK Bandar Damai Perdana when a runaway lorry – an unlicensed lori hantu – from a construction site up the hill, came hurtling down the road and crushed them to death.

Street trader Norhaslidalini Hamzah was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after the crash caused boiling oil to splash all over her body while four other students escaped with minor injuries.

School quiet after runaway truck tragedy

The entrance to SMK Bandar Damai Perdana, Kajang, Selangor, the scene of a horrific incident in which two students were killed yesterday, seemed eerily quiet at 1.30pm today.

However, the expected bustle, as morning session ended and afternoon session began, was notably absent.

The death of the SMK Bandar Damai Perdana students crushed by a “lori hantu (unregistered lorry)” has left a deep impact on all concerned.

A parent, who only wanted to be known as Vigneiswari, said that the atmosphere today was very quiet compared to normal.

“Many of the students have not come to school today. Or else, this place will be filled with cars. It is unusually quiet.”

Vigneiswari, who lives in the flats opposite the school, added that she knew Lau Zi Xin and Wong Siow Xuen, both 13, and their parents.

“My son and the girls were in the same class, last year. The girls were very close,” she said, her eyes welling up with tears.

Vigneiswari said that she now fears for the safety of her son and the other students.

“These trucks should not be coming in and out of the area during school hours, particularly when the school sessions are changing,” she said.

“Two children killed is bad enough but if the students from the morning session had been out at the same time, there would have been more bodies.”
