KOTA KINABALU: Five people including a woman were held after a Japanese bodybuilder claimed he was robbed by a gang who were “in cahoots” with the police here.
The athlete, a key official with the Asian Bodybuilding Federation, had posted on social media a short video of the men taking money from him.
He had claimed that a man who identified himself as a policeman was with them at an alley in Kampung Air yesterday about 3pm.
Police’s subsequent investigation led them to the gang and dismissed the claim that a policeman was involved.
Cash amounting to RM1,400, USD65 and 10,000 Japanese Yen were also recovered from the suspects.
City police chief Assistant Commissioner M Chandra explained that the Japanese man had confronted one of the gang members after they took his money.
“A detective, who was in the area where an anti-narcotics operation was being conducted, had approached them. “He showed his warrant card to diffuse the situation and was not able to understand what the Japanese man was saying. He advised the foreigner to go to the police station and lodge a report,” he said.
Later at the police station here, the Japanese man saw the detective and accused him of being part of the gang on social media.
He posted a video on YouTube and posted his allegations on his Facebook account.

Japanese body builder fleeced by ‘sex worker’ in Kota Kinabalu

To make things worse, Takashi Isihara could not understand English and the local dialect which led him to assume that policemen were part of a gang who fleeced him of US$65 (RM283.40), RM1,400, Yen10, 000 (RM367.60) at about 3pm on Jan 5.

The incident that went viral on social networks after Takashi, who is Asian Body Builder Federation vice-president, posted on Facebook.

City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said Takashi misunderstood the presence of undercover policemen who were at the scene on a drug raid.

He followed her to her room in a shoplot upstairs in Kampung Air and was confronted by four men who took his money and other belongings. The men and the woman then left him in the room.

Takashi chased after the suspects to ask for his money. An argument broke out between them as a group of policemen in civilian clothes approached and one of them showed his badge.

The policemen told Takashi to lodge a report but he apparently could not understand English.

Later, Takashi went to the Karamunsing station to lodge a report and was shocked to see the same group of policemen there.

ACP Chandra said Takashi must have thought that the policemen were with the gang so he left the station, only to return later to lodge a report as advised by a local friend.
