The DAP assemblyman, the businessman, debt collectors and penangheadline.com: A scandal brewing?

Lau Keng Ee, DAP’s Pengkalan Kota assemblyman in the Tanjong parliamentary constituency, has lodged a police report that he had been harrassed by debt collectors for debts totalling RM200,000.

He has also threatened to sue penangheadline.com for saying that he borrowed money from a loanshark or has defaulted in a loan payment of RM200,000.

The website, which apparently publishes unfavourable articles about the Penang government, alleged in the report that Lau failed to obtain the project for a businessman after taking the bribe.

A Penang DAP assemblyperson has threatened to sue an obscure website that he borrowed money from a loanshark or has defaulted in a loan payment of RM200,000.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyperson Lau Keng Ee also strongly denied receiving any form of bribe from anyone in lieu of obtaining a housing project for a businessman, as alleged in the website penangheadline.com.

Lau challenged the individuals behind the allegations to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

He is giving the accusers 48 hours to retract their allegations or face legal action from him for defamation.

On Dec 28, at about 2.30pm, Lau said he received a telephone call from a stranger who said he represented someone named “Jackie”.

“The man asked me to pay back a loan of RM200,000 I took from Jackie.

“I told him I have not taken such a loan, and ended the call. I was then on the way to the Penang airport,” Lau said in a press conference today.

“During that time, my assistant Brandon sent me text messages to say that a man came asking for me at my service centre at McCallum Street.

“Brandon told him I was not at the office and he left. After that, I received several phone calls from the same number but I did not answer,” he added.

Accompanying Lau at the press conference was lawyer cum DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer.

“If penangheadline.com does not remove or retract the report or show proof, we will write to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to find out who the webmaster is, after which, we will proceed with legal action,” Rayer said.

DAP assemblyman gives 48 hours to social media page to retract false allegations

GEORGE TOWN: A DAP assemblyman has given 48 hours to a social media page to apologise and retract statements on alleged funds received by him for a development project.

Pengkalan Kota elected representative Lau Keng Ee denied such allegations posted in Mandarin and said they were baseless and uncalled for.

He denied of ever receiving RM200,000 funds and instead challenged the page administrator (penangheadline.com) to lodge a report with Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should they have evidence.

“Failing to do so, I will take legal action in court,” he told a press conference accompanied by legal counsel RSN Rayer.

He said he came across the post defaming him at the page about afternoon yesterday.

DAP rep harassed by debt collectors

GEORGE TOWN: A state assemblyman lodged a police report as he feared for his safety after being pursued by debt collectors for failing to settle alleged debts totalling RM200,000.

It is learnt that the 35-year-old state assemblyman, who won a seat in the Tanjong parliamentary constituency during the 13th general election, had lodged the report on Tuesday after receiving several telephone calls from a man who had allegedly been demanding money since Monday.

Sources said the assemblyman’s service centre in Jalan Free School was also visited by two men on Tuesday to demand money that was purportedly owed by the elected representative.

Based on preliminary investigation by the police, the 37-year-old businessman, who allegedly provided loans to the assemblyman, had claimed they knew each other since 2012 and had claimed to have given loans on several occasions.

“The businessman, who owns a pawnshop, has claimed to have given the elected rep cash loans several times, and the most was RM150,000 last year for a housing project he carried out with a local businessman in the state.

“All the loan dealings were made at the assemblyman’s service centre but there was no documents since the loans were provided based on trust,” claimed the source.

The source said the assemblyman, however, denied having taken any loan despite having received several calls from the individual who wanted his money back.

The source said the businessman also claimed that only two payments via cheques totalling RM20,000 was made by the elected rep until May last year and after that payment had stopped.
