IGP: Numerous reports filed on proselytisation of Muslims

…
The police have received numerous reports regarding attempts by Christian groups to proselytise Muslims, according to inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Though he did not provide an exact figure, Khalid said the number of reports lodged nationwide is a cause for concern.
“We have reports filed by individuals and organisations. I don’t have to tell you how sensitive and potentially explosive this issue is.
“The law is clear on this matter and we must abide by it,” he told Malaysiakini.
…
Yesterday, Khalid defended the presence of the Special Branch officer at the seminar, saying no law was broken.
…
As for the seminar, Khalid said the speakers did not preach hatred for Christians or demonise the faith, but rather cautioned participants about conversion attempts in order to safeguard the Islamic faith.
“I am sure other religious groups also hold similar seminars to strengthen the faiths of their respective believers,” he added.

Bishop says IGP’s reaction ‘stupefying’
He said the IGP’s “misconception of the role of the police was astounding for someone in his lofty position but not particularly surprising given the general debasement of fiduciary duties and standards of present times in our country”.
Bishop says IGP’s reaction ‘stupefying’ https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/323578 @KBAB51

…
Catholic Bishop Emeritus Dr Paul Tan Chee Ing described as “stupefying” the response of inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to mounting criticism of the police role at a university seminar last Saturday on promoting awareness of Christian proselytisation of Muslims.
…
Paul, a vocal defender of the rights of religious minorities, said that Khalid had demeaned his office by responding in the manner he did to public criticism of police participation in the seminar.
“I find his defence of the police role at the seminar stupefying because its theme smacks of fear-mongering and Christian-bashing and police participation in it can be interpreted as an endorsement of its contents,” said the bishop.
“He has debased his high office by allowing the police to participate in the seminar and his frivolous reaction to legitimate criticism further tarnishes the name and role of the force in the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the country,” added the prelate.

IGP: Legal for cops to give talk against Christian conversion

…
There is no law preventing police from attending or giving seminars on alleged Christianisation, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
“I want to ask you, are there any laws saying that (police attending such a seminar) is wrong?
“We can be anywhere and we are always everywhere,” Khalid told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.
Khalid responded thus when asked why police conducted the ‘Ancaman Gerakan Pemuradan Kristianisasi’ seminar at UiTM Lendu last weekend.

Baru: Muslim scapegoating of Christians must stop

…
Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said the phenomenon of Christian-bashing by sections of the Muslim population has been tolerated for so long now that its continuance threatens religious tranquillity in Malaysia.
“On the peninsula this phenomenon has taken the form of looking for the ghost of Christian proselytisation of Muslims,” observed the lawyer representing Ba’ kelalan in the state legislature.
“In the last eight years of this phenomenon’s emergence, not one iota of proof for the actual existence of this alleged proselytisation has been furnished, yet the phenomenon is not ceasing but instead is resurrected periodically to hurt and impugn Christians,” said Baru, who speacialises in customary rights cases in the courts.
…
“In spite of the fact that in all the last eight years of this phenomenon’s emergence there has not been one instance of proof of its occurrence, the claim that Christian proselytisation of Muslims has occurred and is occurring has not ceased.
“This can only mean that the phenomenon is irrational and is owed to a psychosis that is beyond Christians’ capacity to remove or placate,” argued Baru.
He said this means that Christians, who constitute a majority in Sarawak, are subject to victimisation at the hands of people who from time to time desire to assuage their insecurity or fear through bashing Christians.

Christian youths question police’s role in UiTM seminar

…
The Malaysia Christian Youth Association today questioned the police’s involvement at the anti-Christian seminar held at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) on Saturday, where an officer was one of the presenters.
Its president, Pastor David Ngu, said the involvement of the police was upsetting.
He added that the job scope of the force was to maintain order and security in the country, and not to be presenters at such forums.
The seminar had misled the public as it identified Christians as being a national threat and this would damage interfaith relations, he said.
“Since the establishment of Malaysia, Christians have worked closely with people of other faiths for a better Malaysia.
“How could Christians now become a threat to the nation?” Ngu said in a statement today.
Ngu said religious freedom for all Malaysians was clearly expressed in the Federal Constitution and national philosophy Rukunegara.
That the seminar was held so close to the celebration of Christmas was also disrespectful, he added.
“The prime minister keeps stressing about the 1Malaysia spirit and about tolerance and living in harmony.
“But this seminar is a big slap for the prime minister with regard to his 1Malaysia movement,” Ngu added.

No sense to belittle Christianity to strengthen faith of Muslims, says DAP’s Dyana

…
DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud wants action to be taken against Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for holding an anti-Christian seminar over the weekend, questioning if it made sense to belittle the religion just to strengthen the faith of Muslims.
The former Teluk Intan by-election candidate also questioned why there had been no action against the university for holding a similar seminar on May 6 last year.
“The seminars clearly prove that UiTM is allowing religious provocation with the intention to sow hatred among Malaysians.
“How would Muslims feel if a similar anti-Islam seminar was held at an institution of higher learning?” Dyana asked in a statement today.

Lawyer says A-G must reopen UiTM anti-Christian seminar case after latest event

…
A lawyer today urged Putrajaya to reopen investigations against Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) for holding a seminar which vilified the Christian faith last year, after the institution held a similar forum at its Malacca campus over the weekend.
Lawyer Annou Xavier told The Malaysian Insider that following the previous seminar on May 6 last year, police reports were lodged at various places including at the Shah Alam police headquarters.
Xavier, who represented the two individuals who lodged the reports in Shah Alam, said police took eight to nine months to investigate, following which the Attorney-General’s Chambers directed that the file be kept open.
The two complainants then were identified as, Perzeus James and Uthaya Sankar Narayanan, whose statements were recorded by the police.
Xavier had said then that the AGC had decided not to charge anyone over the reports for the time being.
“Basically, the file has not been closed, but no one is going to be charged for now. The file is under KIV (keep in view), until such a seminar is organised by UiTM again,” Xavier had said at the Shah Alam district police headquarters in February.
Today, the lawyer pointed out that a similar anti-Christian seminar was organised by the same university in Malacca, adding that the police and the AGC must act on the matter.
He said the recurrence of such a seminar in an institute of higher learning clearly showed that Islamic radicalism is recognised by such an institution and supported by the authorities.
“Time and time again, the patience of the Christian community is tested to the hilt and vilifying minority religions in Malaysia seems to be a norm.
“All Christians will not sit quiet after this anti-Christian seminar and will pursue this matter with the police and AGC,” he added.

Christians proselytise using ‘gold, glory, gospel’, students told

…
UiTM students who were told to attend a compulsory seminar at the Lendu, Malacca campus last Saturday were told of purported methods of Christian proselytisation of Muslims.
A participant who spoke to Malaysiakini condition of anonymity said the seminar touched on the usage of ‘Allah’ in the Bible, the pope, Christians in Indonesia and the Crusades.
The speaker told them that Christians are trying to convert Muslims by using the 3Gs – gold, glory and gospel, the participant said.
“It didn’t feel like it was for akidah (faith), it felt more like putting down other religions,” the participant said.
Participants also were made to stay, even if they were not interested in the topic.

UiTM holds anti-Christian seminar again

…
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) , the same public institution that courted controversy by holding an anti-Christian seminar in May last year, held a similar one titled “Ancaman Gerakan Pemurtadan Kristianisasi (Threat of the Christian proselytisation movement) at its campus in Lendu, Malacca, on Saturday.
A picture of one a slide on the seminar title was posted by Facebook user Deacon Adrian Ng on his page on Saturday morning.
From the screen grab of the slide that has been making its rounds on social media, the police logo can be clearly seen alongside UiTM’s logo.
…
Last year, UiTM in Shah Alam held a seminar on the use of the word “Allah” and Christology, which featured speakers from Indonesia.
The audience then was told that undercover Christian priests had been sent to Malaysia under different guises, including working with Muslim children as football coaches, to proselytise and convert Muslims.
It also featured a talk on “10 reasons why Christians should become Muslims” and belittled the Bible by alleging that it contained “tales”.
Police reports were lodged in Selangor and Sarawak against the seminar.
The claim that seminar’s speakers from Indonesia, who were purportedly a former priest and an ex-nun, was debunked by the Bishops Conference of Indonesia.
Those who lodged police reports against the seminar later complained of the lack of action by the authorities. – December 14, 2015.
