Christmas 2015 in Sarawak.

You won’t see any NGOs or other groups objecting to Christians holding parades in celebration of Christmas.

14 December 2015

While Brunei bans the celebration of Christmas due to phobia, here in Sarawak, Muslim and non-Muslim police officers sing with gusto the most popular Christmas carol ‘White Christmas’. May God bless Sarawak! May God bless Malaysia! Merry Christmas my friends!

MIRI: IN what has become a unique tradition here, Christians and Muslims held a joint Christmas gathering at a church in Miri on Sunday evening.

The event was attended by Muslims from the Masjid An Naim and Christians from the Anglican Good Shepherd Church Lutong and Catholic, SIB and Methodist churches.

The celebration was held in the compound of the Good Shepherd Church.

The Masjid An Naim and Good Shepherd Church are located less than 100m from one another in Lutong bazaar, about 10km from the city proper.

Sarawak Assistant Minister for Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin was the guest of honour along with Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting and leaders from the Buddhist, Tua Pek Kong and Miri Indian Association.

Lee, who is State Assemblyman for Senadin, said the state government is pleased to see such unique racial and religious unity in Miri and Sarawak.

“Where else can one find churches and mosques and temples sharing facilities with each other and sharing food and fellowship like families.

Pastor of the church Donald Jute said the mosque and church have been sharing car parks for the past 50 years.

“It has become a way of life for us to share car park and meet for gatherings. To us Muslim and Christians we are one big family,” he said.

Chairman of the mosque, Ithnaini Bohari said it has become natural for the Muslims here to share whatever facilities and occasions with the Christians and other Chinese here.

“It is so natural to us that it is part of our daily way of life,” he said.

Adenan flags off the parade at Miri City Fan.

MIRI: Some 40,000 people took part in the eighth edition of the Miri Christmas Parade on Saturday night — the largest so far since the parade was introduced in 2008.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem officiated at the annual event, which was coordinated by the Roman Catholic church with the cooperation of 15 other Christian denominations and the Miri City Council (MCC).

In keeping with its main objective of gathering local Christians to celebrate Christmas, the event consisted of a colourful parade around the city and a variety concert held at Miri City Fan.

Besides dressing in colourful attire, members of the various churches were also seen holding up banners and balloons glorifying God in line with the theme of the annual parade — ‘Jesus, The Light of the World’.

Performances and gospel songs sung by the participating churches and also guest band Sada Borneo (one of the semi-finalists of AXN hit reality show ‘Asia’s Got Talent’) were part of the night’s festivities.
