Chennai:  Young techies Nikhil and Harsheet were among the first ones to fly out of Chennai on Sunday after the city’s airport resumed operations following a four-day closure due to a waterlogged runway.

But it was a token resumption on day one as no flights took off in the night and international operations were not resumed either. Just four Air India flights took off while other airlines chose to wait for the situation to improve further.
The floods damaged the airport’s radar and navigation systems and it is using Air Force radar. But the Airports Authorities of India officials have confirmed that it will resume 24-hour operations from today morning, both domestic and international.

The Southern railways restored partial services bringing relief to commuters. But with the Meteorological department’s forecast of more rains, returning to normalcy would be difficult.

Chennai floods: Over 90 Malaysians still stranded, face food shortage

NEW DELHI: As Indian authorities intensify a massive search and rescue operation in flood-battered Chennai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, more than 90 Malaysians are still stranded in their hotel rooms and homes.

With torrential rains expected in the next 36 hours, danger continues to lurk in Tamil Nadu, warns the Indian Meteorological Department.

About 269 people died as the rains pounded the state mercilessly while a loss of 54 lives was reported in Andhra Pradesh and two deaths recorded in the state of Puducherry.

When contacted Friday, Malaysian Consul-General R. Citra Devi said until late last night, 249 Malaysians had contacted the flood crisis centre set up by her office for assistance.

“Of the number, 158 were rescued with the help of local authorities, with some managing to find their way to Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu and the Bengaluru International Airport in Karnataka.

“As of 10 this morning, 91 Malaysian tourists and students were still stranded but most of them are located in the ‘safe zone’ where in some areas, the flood waters were receding.

“The only major problem we are facing here now is food shortage and we don’t have sufficient logistics support, especially boats to reach out to them,” lamented Citra.
