Airbags are a safety device meant to reduce the risk of injury in crashes, but instead it killed an 8-year-old girl in a car driven by her brother.
Nur Khyra Amira Azman was in the car with her two older brothers, aged 12 and 17, on their way home when her brother who was driving the car, known as Along, hit a bump near their home in Bandar Utama, Sungai Petani, around 2pm yesterday.
Khyra who was seated in the front seat, was resting her face on the dashboard of the car, while her other brother was in the back seat, according to Along.
As they reached a bump, Along hit the brakes, causing both airbags on the driver and passenger’s seat to inflate, and hit his sister.
“As soon as I stopped the car, I was shocked that Khyra was not on her seat. I got out of the car to look for her, afraid that she had been thrown out, but instead I found her stuck at the back of the driver’s seat.

Air Bag Safety – The Police Notebook
Air bags save lives.
They work best when everyone is buckled and children are properly restrained in the back seat. Children riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an air bag comes out in a crash.
An air bag is not a soft, billowy pillow. To do its important job, an air bag comes out of the dashboard at up to 200 miles per hour — faster than the blink of an eye. The force of an air bag can hurt those who are too close to it.
Drivers can prevent air bag-related injuries to adults and children by following the critical safety points:

How Airbags Work
Imagine you’re in your car driving home. The weather isn’t particularly bad, the road conditions are fine, and you’re singing along with the radio. Then out of nowhere, a car makes an illegal turn, winds up in front of you, and you don’t have time to stop. You hear the screech of metal as your car collides with the other, and brace yourself to go flying through the windshield. Instead, you are pushed backward into your seat, held there for a split second, and then the pressure subsides. Your seatbelt was the first line of defense but you are upright in the driver’s seat because your car is equipped with a vehicle airbag.

I would be more interested in the bump. Why would someone need to hit the emergency brake then? If you live in KL, go to Jalan Peel. There is a deceptive monster speed bump outside the Convent Peel Road School. You will regret trying it above 10km/hr. I wonder if the one above can beat this?
Secondly, it looks like many folks never read their car manual and many safety experts fail to mention that airbags can kill in another way. I was surprised to read, in my sister-in-laws MYVI, about keeping the dashboard dry.

It is probably why the dashboard is sloping. No way to keep anything wet or cold there.
