Malaysia’s 24-hour mamak stalls under threat by Parliament proposal to ban late-night eateries
KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Malaysia’s famous 24-hour mamak stalls and hawker centres may soon be no more, if a proposal submitted to the government to clamp down on these late night eateries, apparently to curb social ills, is adopted.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said the proposal to restrict operating hours to midnight followed complaints that such outlets were the reason for the rise in social ills nationwide.
“A note and proposal paper will be submitted to the Deputy Prime Minister and National Social Council,” he told reporters at Parliament lobby here yesterday.
“It is not a blanket ban on all restaurants or eateries but those in specific areas such as in housing and rural areas.”
Datuk Seri Shahidan assured that franchise outlets such as McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were not included in the ban.
Mr Shahidan noted that in other countries, most eateries and restaurants closed before midnight.

Closing 24 hours mamak stalls because allegedly there will be social ills to the citizens? Malaysian’s government is really a joke now.
Malaysia logic: No more 24 hour mamak stalls bc of social reasons. But night clubs where actual alcohol consumption happens are totally fine
seriously though there are other more pressing matters in need of attention & taking care of but we’re trying to stop 24-hour mamak stalls?

24-hours mamak stalls are the main cause to the rise in social ills? Sure, eating roti canai & drinking teh tarik after midnight is wild

Ban on 24-hour restaurants might force youths to pubs and nightclubs #nst170 http://www.nst.com.my/node/89854

…
GEORGE TOWN: The recent call to limit 24-hour eateries might force youths to watch live football matches at bars and nightclubs.
Kapitan Keling Mosque qariah chairman Meera Mydin Mastam said this, adding that most youths frequent Mamak (Indian Muslim) restaurants late at night to catch matches.
“Why bother banning 24-hour restaurants when there are more bars and street parties today? “If there is a ban, the youths will have no choice but to go to bars to watch football matches and have social meetings.” he said in a joint press conference with the Iman Society in Lebuh Chulia here today.
Meera, together with 20 other Indian Musilm-interest groups expressed their dismay over the call, saying it would affect Mamak shops nationwide.

Jangan salahkan restoran mamak – Syaruzaimi Yusof
Proposal for food outlets to stop by midnight? http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/303142

Disallowing eateries from operating until past midnight to reduce social ills is among the proposals to be discussed at the National Social Council meeting next week.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said another proposal was limiting the operating hours of entertainment outlets in tackling the worsening problem. “We take note that many developed countries have set certain rules with regard to night activities, such as those aged 18 and below are forbidden from being out of their home after 11pm.
“Eateries, meanwhile, are only allowed to operate until midnight, for instance. There is also no compromise on entertainment outlets that exceed the set operating hours, or action will be taken.
“But it’s different here (in Malaysia) due to the presence of many who require the services of this industry, such as tourists, foreign migrants and so so. The leeway has contributed to social ills.”
Since when did eating roti canai at night and drinking warm milo at night become a cause of social ill. Saya tidak pernah main pelacur atau minum arak atau bonceng perempuan belakang saya…………
