Chong Wei ends 13-year wait to win China Open title

National badminton ace Lee Chong Wei created history when he ended Malaysia’s 13-year wait to win the China Open title at the Haixia Olympic Sports Centre in Fuzhou, China today.

The former world number one took 50 minutes to brush aside current world number one Chen Long of China in straight sets of 21-15 and 21-11 in the final.

Chong Wei stayed true to the top form he was showing after having beaten Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in the quarter-finals and arch rival Lin Dan of China, the current world number three, en route to the final.

The last time a Malaysian won the title was in 2002 with Wong Choong Hann doing the honours.

KUALA LUMPUR — Former world number one Lee Chong Wei won the US Open yesterday (June 21) to claim his first title since returning from an eight-month doping ban. The 32-year-old Malaysian, twice an Olympic silver medallist and world championship runner-up, beat Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark 22-20 21-12 in Brentwood, New York. “I’m happy with my performance in the US Open even though this is my (first) individual tournament after nine months. US OPEN SF – Former #1s in the final

Lee Chong Wei is in the final of the nearly ten years since last competing in the United States and he is joined on Sunday by fellow former world #1 Yu Yang, playing in the Western Hemisphere for the first time in 11 years. By Don Hearn.  Photos: Yves Lacroix for Badmintonphoto (live) The last time Lee Chong Wei was in an individual BWF ranking competition was at last summer’s BWF World Championships in Copenhagen.  The last time he competed in the United States was ten summers ago, when he won bronze in his first ever World Championship appearance. … Lee’s opponent in the final will be Hans-Kristian Vittinghus.  The Dane ousted top seed Chou Tien Chen.  Both players were playing in their first semi-finals of the year.  Chou has held onto his top ten ranking with a couple of quarter-final finishes since his semi-final appearance at the China Open late last year but Vittinghus has been in a much deeper slump, never progressing past the second round since becoming the runner-up in Dubai in December.

Chong Wei marches into US Open semi-finals

The former world number one showed that he had not lost any of his touches despite an eight-month absence from competition by beating Rajiv Ouseph of England in the quarter-finals of the US Open Grand Prix Gold held at the Suffolk County Community College, Brentwood, United States. The 33-year-old player took 32 minutes to beat the world number 20, 21-9 and 21-14 to set up a battle against B. Sai Praneeth of India who defeated Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long 21-8 and 21-14 win. Top seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan, who is also world number seven, stayed in contention for his first title this season by beating Japan’s Takuma Ueda 21-11 and 21-19 to set up a semi-final match against Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/sports/article/chong-wei-marches-into-us-open-semi-finals?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter#sthash.aAPRv0Vq.dpbs
