A Malaysian police source told the Telegraph that Miss Hawkins cried when a warden told her she would have to spend a fourth night in jail despite paying the £858 fine. “They cried and were terrified when she was told they had to stay in the Death Penalty Prisoner room. They can’t offer any more beds as the prison is so packed,” the police source said.
“At first we thought the girls would spend the night in the death row cells too, but then they found space in a normal cell. The girls burst into tears when we told them and were very upset. They were asking why they could not be freed, seeing as the lawyer had already handed over the fine for all of them.”
The source said an immigration officer would return at 9am Saturday local time (2am BST) to sign the paperwork for their release.
The judge sentenced the tourists to three days in prison for for taking nude photos on Mt Kinabalu, a mountain sacred to the local Dasun people,
