In tribute video, Sabah mountain guides say gambled on descent when rescue didn’t come

By JULIA CHAN

“Maybe there were too much procedure or SOP that held them back from doing what they felt was best. I’m so very disappointed that procedures preceded human lives,” he said.

Another guide, Christopher Peter Ebi, said that descending was their priority as the dangers of staying up in the open summit without proper supplies were far greater than the trek down.

A Malaysian-born Australian trekker who was among the 105 tourist climbers stranded at the mountain’s summit on Friday lashed out at Malaysia’s emergency response, calling it a “farce”.

In an interview with Australia’s ABC News, Vee Jin Dumlao alleged of shambolic organisation by local rescuers, whom she said idled and ate food meant for victims while the native guides did most of the rescuing.

She also claimed that some of those who died might have been saved if the rescue helicopters had been sent when weather cleared up on Friday evening.

: Mountain guides express concern for future after park closed for 3 weeks

KOTA KINABALU — He was able to take home at least RM900 (S$320) every month as a mountain guide to support his family of six.

But with Kinabalu Park closed for three weeks in the aftermath of last Friday’s earthquake, Mr Jeniey Sius is worried about making ends meet.

Yesterday Malaysia’s Minister of Communication and Multimedia Ahmad Shabery Cheek handed RM50,000 to the Kinabalu Mountain Guides Association chairman Richard Soibi for its 250 mountain guides. The funds were raised from a donation drive for the mountain guides. The Sabah authorities have also been given RM10 million for rehabilitation works.

However, guides and their families TODAY spoke to said it was unclear how or when the funds would be disbursed, and they are concerned about meeting daily expenses.

: MOE clarifies that TKPS team was on simpler route

Published: 4:16 AM, June 11, 2015

The Ministry of Education (MOE) clarified yesterday that the Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) team was on a simpler route on Mount Kinabalu when the earthquake struck.

Compared with the regular Via Ferrata route, where the elevation of the starting point is 3,520m, the pupils, teachers and their guides began on a route at an elevation of 3,411m, stated the MOE.

Mountain Torq, which manages the Via Ferrata, added that this was also a shorter route — 281m instead of the original route, which is 430m long.

An MOE spokesperson said: “This is a less steep route compared to the full Walk the Torq route.” She confirmed that the TKPS teams have been using the simplified route since 2010.

KUALA LUMPUR — One of Mount Kinabalu’s most experienced mountain guides was today (June 9) called upon to “rescue” two geologists stranded 4km up on the mountain that is still being shaken by minor aftershocks.

The Sabah Geology Department was forced to call on Mr Jahinin Waimi, who reputedly had made 1,000 climbs in an 11-year career, to bring the geologists down after the helicopter that had airlifted them up in the morning could not evacuate them this afternoon due to rain and low clouds enveloping the mountain.

A small aftershock was reportedly felt at Laban Rata – 6.3km up the mountain – at 10.40am while another small jolt at 1.42pm sent female staff scurrying out of the Sabah national park headquarters.

Mr Jahinin was an obvious pick as he was one of 90 guides the park mustered last Friday to help bring down some 103 climbers that were left stranded on the mountain.

They had set out a temporary paths over the ones destroyed in the quake for rescuers.

KOTA KINABALU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Monday was a day of mourning for the victims of the earthquake at Mount Kinabalu, the worst natural disaster at the World Heritage Site. Across Sabah yesterday, flags flew at half-mast as families buried their loved ones and others waited to identify the dead at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital mortuary. Singapore also marked yesterday as a day of remembrance. The outpouring of grief began as early as Sunday evening when people lit candles at the graffiti corner of an old ruined colonial building in the heart of the city. At a corner wall, three local artists painted a mural depicting mountain guide Mhd Rizuan Kauhanin, who became the symbol of Mount Kinabalu’s unsung heroes for their rescue efforts in the aftermath of last Friday’s 5.9-magnitude earthquake. – See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/asia/south-east-asia/story/sabah-quake-mural-artists-the-focal-point-day-mourning-across-sabah-#sthash.MQJAzeuz.dpuf

KUALA LUMPUR — An Australian who had been stranded for nine hours on Mount Kinabalu after an earthquake hit has lashed out at Malaysian emergency responders for not sending helicopters out for rescue despite good weather conditions. In an interview with Australia’s ABC, Ms Vee Jin Dumlao alleged of shambolic organisation by local rescuers, whom she said idled and ate food meant for victims while the native guides — the “unsung heroes” — did most of the rescuing. She told the news outlet that she along with 136 other climbers had to make the perilous journey down the mountain with the help of their guides on Friday evening (June 5), after officials told them not to expect rescue until the next morning. Ms Dumlao said that officials told them that foggy weather prevented rescue helicopters from being sent up for evacuation efforts. “However, around about 3.30pm the sky actually cleared right up, from ground level up to the mountains and that’s when we thought there’s nothing stopping them now from coming to get us. “When the clouds lifted, all the guides got a phone call from ground level to say ‘alright the helicopters are coming’. We prepared ourselves, we organised ourselves into groups but nothing happened,” she said. … She added that the rescue effort appeared disorganised, and without helicopters, the rescue officers were of little help, stuck on foot and five hours away from the mountain’s peak. “They congregated in groups occupying resting spaces, sharing smokes and food that were meant for survivors. SINGAPORE – About 12 to 15 students and five teachers from Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) were on the mountain trail when the earthquake struck Mount Kinabalu on Friday morning (June 5), the second day of their trip.

In a briefing today, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said based on accounts from the students and teachers on the trip, 24 students and eight teachers began their trek at around 4.30am to 5.30am. Five students stayed behind at the rest hut as they were feeling ill. The students on the trek were divided into five groups. Three groups were already attempting a 430m route on the Via Ferrata known as the Walk The Torq route at about 7am when the earthquake occurred at 7.15am. The remaining two groups were waiting for their turn. MOE officials said it is believed that the deceased students, teacher and guide were mainly those from the three groups that had started on the route. The students in the remaining two groups huddled as teachers tried to shield the students when the earthquake happened. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/sabah-quake-what-happened-friday-morning

SINGAPORE – The 4,095m-high Mount Kinabalu in Sabah is popular with Singapore schools organising mountaineering expeditions and young children who are fit should have no problems scaling the mountain, said tour agencies and experienced climbers. Questions over whether the route was suitable for 12-year-olds have emerged after news broke that a group of pupils from Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) were caught in an earthquake while climbing the mountain on Friday. Mr Clarence Lee, 39, manager of Pac-West Travel which has been organising school trips to the mountain for more than a decade, said: “No technical skills are needed, it’s not like ice-climbing. You just need to build up your stamina and be healthy.” Mr Collin Ng, a 53-year-old events organiser who has climbed the mountain four times, said: “It is definitely safe for upper primary school pupils as long as they follow the instructions of the guides. …
But an earthquake, climbers said, may change things. The last entry on a blog for this year’s TKPS expedition, dated June 4, said that the pupils were supposed to take the Via Ferrata route the next day – the day the quake struck. The Via Ferrata is a trail along the rock face. Climbers, wearing harnesses, would move along by clipping a pair of carabiners to a long cable fixed to the mountainside. Mr Ng said the Via Ferrata is usually scaled in the morning, after sunrise. Friday’s quake struck at 7.15am. If the pupils were near or on the Via Ferrata route when the earthquake struck, there is no shelter or vegetation on the rock face to protect them from falling rocks and debris, he said. He added: “When the quake struck, my fear was for those who were doing the Via Ferrata. Some may be caught by the falling rocks where there is no escape for them.” – See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/more-singapore-stories/story/sabah-quake-no-protection-falling-rocks-route-20150607#sthash.zmXxBZOh.dpuf

PETALING JAYA, June 7 — Robbi Sapinggi will go down in local history as the hero of the devastating June 5 earthquake after he placed the safety of the climber he was accompanying before his own despite being critically injured by falling rocks. Even in his dying moments, his only thoughts were for the climber whom he advised to descend Mount Kinabalu as fast as possible. The 31-year-old, who was bleeding profusely, had also indicated to the person that he wanted to help others who might be on their way down the steep slope. An Amazing Borneo employee, Lynn Tiang, who related Sapinggi’s last moments after hearing accounts from witnesses, said the veteran guide and the climber were well on their way down when the earthquake struck and he was hit by falling rocks. “Despite being hit, he instructed the climber to descend first, prioritising the person’s safety before his,” she added.

She said she was told that Sapinggi had wanted to wait for a rescue team and not attempt a descent on his own. Sapinggi, from Kampung Kiau, Ranau, is believed to have waited for about five hours before deciding to slide down the rocky slope. “When the rescue team found him, he was barely alive. He died moments later,” she added. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/acclaim-pours-in-for-guide-who-died-aiding-kinabalu-quake-victims#sthash.DpAesSJK.dpuf

Sabah quake: Local mountain guides hailed as unsung heroes in aftermath

By JULIA CHAN

zbMountain guidea Ridwan earned the awe and praise for his efforts in carrying an injured climber back to safety.

KUNDASANG, June 6 — A trek up Mount Kinabalu is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many, but for the local mountain guides, it is their life. Spending their days either bringing people or cargo up the mountain, the local Dusuns from the foothills of mount Kinabalu recently carried their most precious cargo yet. Following the powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake yesterday morning, the guides were instrumental in bringing back the injured, the weak and the deceased through chaotic conditions. A photo of a guide hunched over with an injured climber strapped over his back has earned admiration, praise and awe from social media users who hailed him as an unsung hero. Rubbi Sapinggi, a 30-year-old mountain guide from Kampung Kiau, succumbed to head injuries in the aftermath of the earthquake. Sabahan Mia Meara said that the mountain guides went above and beyond their duties. “It’s not an easy task and sometimes a thankless job: we salute and appreciate all your efforts as some of you are currently still ascending/descending the mountain,” she said on Facebook. “These are the real heroes, our mountain guides. They bring down the injured on their backs. Sophisticated helicopters that cost millions are rendered useless in these conditions,” said Facebook user Banie Lasimbang. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/sabah-quake-local-mountain-guides-hailed-as-unsung-heroes-in-aftermath#sthash.VtYAppBw.dpuf

Ranau district police chief deputy superintendent Farhan Lee Abdullah said that the two bodies brought down yesterday at 8.25pm and 8.45pm were that of 30-year-old mountain guide Robbie Sapinggi and Wee Ying Ping Peony, 12 from Singapore. “We have informed the families of the victims and sent their bodies to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post mortem,” said Farhan at a Press conference today. It was initially reported that Sabah Parks had announced on its Facebook page that the Singaporean victim was a Rachel Ho Yann Shiuan, also 12. Farhan said some 20 others sustained various injuries, from broken limbs to one who is believed to be in a coma. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/sabah-quake-police-clarify-identities-of-victims?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed#sthash.YPR3skkU.dpuf

SINGAPORE: A group of students from Tanjong Katong Primary School were on excursion at Mount Kinabalu when a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday (Jun 5), Channel NewsAsia understands. At least eight of them are uncontactable, along with two teachers, Mr James Ho, a parent of one of the students said. This was later confirmed by the Education Ministry. The 12-year-old students and their teachers were understood to have departed Mount Kinabalu on Wednesday for a leadership programme and were expected to return on Monday afternoon. Anxious parents were seen rushing into the school for a meeting with teachers on Friday afternoon. One woman said her daughter was injured and is “on the way to hospital”. Mr Ho told Channel NewsAsia that his 12-year-old daughter Rachel is one of eight students stranded at the via Ferrata route on Mount Kinabalu. He said he has received no news about their well-being. “This happened in the morning and it’s been more than 12 hours. And the frustrating thing is we are not getting any updates on the rescue operations,” he said. Another 19 students from the school have returned to safety, Mr Ho added, and five of them and one teacher suffered minor injuries. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-primary-school/1895434.html?cid=TWTcna

Mt Kinabalu guide fearing the worst for climbers

KUNDASANG: Mountain guide Hajiris Solumin would not be surprised if there were casualties in the earthquake that shook Mount Kinabalu. “I saw boulders as big as a house falling in front of me just as I was about to start my activity with seven guests, ” said the via ferrata guide, an activity where climbers get to experience walking on the side of the mountain using special harnesses. “I quickly told my guest to turn back to the trail and we walked down. Some of my colleagues had started earlier with their guests and I don’t know where they are now, ” he said fearing the worst for his friends and their guests. 2. Adina B. Ahjina's avatar Adina B. Ahjina says:

For true Believers and Disciples of Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ), today’s earthquake shaking Sabah must need come to pass for such happening is already fore-warned by our Master Yahshua Ha-Mashiach. Believers and unbelievers alike should better read Bible prophecy recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (New Testament) Chapter 24. Earthquake such as experienced in Sabah today is a type of ‘birth pangs’ – signs of Time that Yahshua Ha-Mashiach is SOON coming again the 2nd. time to earth. This time – to judge the world and to bring to an end mankind rebellion against Yahwah’s (God) Torah (laws/commandments/ instructions). Yahshua Ha-Mashiach fore-warned that in THAT DAY – great Tribulation will come about where even mountains will be thrown down – can anyone imagine that ? How terrible will that be? A minor tremor as we had today is shocking enough for us – some people were probably screaming and trembling in fear already when they see their picture frames cracking, wardrobes wobbling and tumbling down ! Can anyone imagine the scenario when the entire EARTH/Universe really shake and spin (like in a washing machine) upon the arrival of the SON of the MOST HIGH Yahwah (God) from the Heaven’s above to earth along with His Hosts of Angels?! In that day, the whole earth/universe have to face the great WRATH of Yahwah. Earthquake such as what we experienced today should be taken as warning sign that the END Time is coming SOON. The Most High Creator Yahwah Elohim have tolerated long enough mankind revolting sinfulness, arrogance and stupidity. But instead of repenting of our sinfulness, what do mankind do ?- lets continue to sin some more and worst; mankind say lets do more evil wickedness here on earth; mankind take pride in doing NUDITY; the wicked say lets murder, rob, rape, steal, fornicate; do bribery and corruption; worship – false gods, idols; money, filmstars (Hollywood/Bollywood, etc), rockstars (idol/Akedemi Fantasia etc), celebrities, etc. instead of directing worship to the one TRUE (God) Yahwah Elohim through his ONE and only begotten SON Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ). Mankind say, there is NO God (Yahwah), He cannot see! He does not hold us to account for our sinful ways! There is NO Heaven or Hell ! See – we have been doing all these sins and we are OK; prospering !! One day, Yahwah Elohim will utter his Word of wrath and the earth shake and tremble such as a few seconds of earthquake like we felt today. And what happens – we come “to nought” ! We suddenly see we are “naked”; we see our “nothingness” and we shriveled when we face the Act of God (Yahwah), don’t we?! We sinful mankind by our own effort/works have NO WAY to escape the wrath of Yahwah (God). But Our Master Yahshua Ha-Mashiach has left us with a COVENANT/promise that those who believe in Him/Call on His Name and do His Torah (Commandments) shall be SAVED (See Bible: Romans Chapter 10) and will receive the gift of Life Eternal through the blood sacrifice on the Cross by Yahshua Ha-Mashiach. For those who trust in their own righteousness/goodness/works are ‘filthy rags’ in Yahwah’s (God) sight (see Bible: Isaiah, Chapter 64). But those who humble themselves before Yahwah and repentant of their sinfulness – their knees bent and bowing and their lips confessing Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ) as their Master, Saviour and Redeemer and ask to be sprinkled/covered with the BLOOD of Yahshua Ha-Maschiach (The Lamb of Yahwah) shall be justified and sanctified – declared righteous/’NOT GUILTY” before His Throne of Judgement because the Blood of the SINLESS Son of Yahwah (God), Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ) (who came to Earth and became Man) cleanses them from ALL Sins, iniquity, transgressions, unrighteousness.(See Bible: 1st John/ Hebrews, Chapters 9-13/ 1st Peter). So, for those who want to pitch their tent with, and want to be the Children of Elohim (God) and enter into Eternal life with Yahwah Elohim – Believe in the promised Salvation through the Blood of the Son of Yahwah (God) – that is Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ) the only Name given under Heavens BY WHOM we may be saved (NO other). (See Bible: Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 4). Only true Believers and Disciples of Yahshua Ha-Mashiach shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. The Dead shall be resurrected from the dead and live again in incorruptible body and shall see Yahwah and Master Yahshua Ha-Mashiach as they really are for the Children of Elohim (God) shall be co-heirs with Yahshua Ha-Mashiach in the Kingdom of Heaven. Isn’t that Good News (Gospel of Yahshua Ha-Mashiach)? But don’t just read what I witness here. Read the WORD of Yahwah Elohim in the BIBLE ( otherwise called OLD Testament AND the New Testament) – the Words of Yahwah Elohim write history before the foundation of the Earth for He is ALPHA and OMEGA (the Beginning and the End) (See Bible: Revelation). Who is mankind to think that we can dismiss Yahwah’s (God) Words and NOT read it ?? If we are going to face the Ultimate Judge (Yahshua Ha-Mashiach) in the Day of Judgement – should we not better know His Laws, Commandments, Instructions and abide and obey them while we are still breathing/alive so that we can, and know how to escape the “Hell sentence” and be declared “Not Guilty – Redeemed/Paid in Full by the Blood of Yahshua Ha-Mashiach” – “Pass; Advanced to Go to Heaven” (Not Hell’s Jail) ?! I could go ON and ON without End to speak about the Kingdom of Heaven v. Kingdom of Ha Satan – but let me just appeal to the readers’ body, soul and spirit consciousness – Yahwah Elohim (God) gave mankind the freewill to choose Light or Darkness; to be Yahwah Elohim’s children or Children of Ha Satan. The Choice is Yours. Heaven or Hell. Take your pick.!!!! Master Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ) said: “Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in Yahwah (God), believe also in Me..” ….”Peace I leave with You, my Peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” …..”And now I have told you BEFORE it come to pass, that when it is come to pass, ye might BELIEVE….”. (See Bible: Gospel of John – Chapter 14 – 17). Come Yahshua Ha-Mashiach Come! King of Kings; Lord of Lords! Thy Kingdom come! Maranatha 3x. Amein 3x.. Halleluyah 3x! SHALOM. and Receive Yahwah Elohim’s grace, mercy and (free) Gift of Eternal life/Salvation through the Death and Resurrection and Redemption by the Blood shed on the Cross of Master/Adonai Yahshua Ha-Mashiach. What have you to loose??!! It is a FREE GIFT from Yahwah Elohim El Shaddai (Most High)!!! So, REPENT of all your Sins and Humble yourself before Yahwah Elohim and BE SAVED!! I Believe and I surrender all – body, soul and spirit – to my Creator Master of the Universe who created us from dust to dust!!. He alone breath His Ruach ( spirit) that give us Life. And life is in the Blood. And only the Blood of the SON of Yahwah, Yahshua Ha-Mashiach who is SINLESS can give us LIFE (NO one else)!! For He alone has defeated death and death has no sting by His death and resurrection. and ascension to Heaven. And right now, He is sitting enthroned in Heaven and will come again to Earth the 2nd.time as he promised and his promise is TRUE. His true Believers and disciples are eagerly awaiting for His Second Coming. How glorious will that scene be for believers/disciples? But not so for non-believers! He alone has the Keys of Hell and of death. (See Revelation, Chapter 1). Ha Satan, the accuser can find nothing in Him, for he Has NO Sin; the only Man who has NO sin! Every one else (the whole of mankind from Adam and Eve) sinned and fall short of the glory of Yahwah (God). The only Saviour, Redeemer of mankind sins acceptable to Yahwah is one who is WITHOUT Sin, Yahshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus Christ). So, Choose Life not Death! Amein 3x. I told you…. I can go ON and ON …… Ba-bye. Full stop!
