Zahid: Ministry on the look out for Special Branch leak

BY MELISSA CHI

PUTRAJAYA, June 4 — Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said that the Home Ministry is investigating the source of a report claiming that 80 per cent of Malaysian border officials are corrupt.

He said the leak should not have happened as not even the police have been able to confirm the percentage of corrupt officials manning the country’s borders.

“We are tracing the person who had confirmed the report. Although I know the reporter who had gotten the information, this shouldn’t happen because even PDRM couldn’t confirm the percentage,” Zahid told reporters today after his ministry’s monthly gathering here.

Yesterday, local daily the New Straits Times cited the police’s Special Branch as claiming that 80 per cent of Malaysian law enforcement officers at the country’s borders were engaged in corruption, with some purportedly also on the smuggling syndicates’ payroll instead of merely taking bribes.

SPECIAL BRANCH REPORT ON CORRUPTION AT THE MALAYSIA-THAILAND BORDER

Citing the Special Branch, the NST said its report showed that 80 per cent of Malaysian law enforcement officers at the country’s borders were engaged in corruption, with some purportedly also on the smuggling syndicates’ payroll instead of merely taking bribes.

The syndicates included those smuggling drugs, weapons and humans, NST said

The report was the result of 10 years of covert operation at the borders, and covers the police’s General Operations Force, Anti-Smuggling Unit, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Immigration Department.

It also said some officers were on a permanent payroll from human trafficking syndicates.

Top cop keeps mum on border corruption report

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar today refused to comment on reports that the majority of Malaysian border authorities are corrupt, asking reporters instead to refer the matter to the Special Branch (SB).

The New Straits Times yesterday said that a report by the SB indicated that 80% of Malaysian security and enforcement officers at the borders were “on the take”.

“Please ask the director of Special Branch. Call him and ask him,” Khalid said when asked about the matter.

Probe on over border corruption

SUBANG JAYA: Police will probe the revelation by Special Branch that more than 80% of enforcement officers at the border are corrupt, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tunku Jaafar.

“Now that this has been uncovered, swift action must be taken by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department,” he said after attending an awards presentation ceremony at a hotel here yesterday.

Noting that what happened in Perlis was considered a wake-up call for all agencies involved in securing the country’s border, Dr Wan Junaidi said the Home Ministry would also investigate the matter.

“Information and intelligence collected by Special Branch is not hard evidence to bring the cases to court,’’ he said, adding that he had yet to verify the Special Branch report.

Home minister wants army to police corrupt Malaysian borders

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 ― Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is seeking for army personnel to replace law enforcement officers manning Malaysian borders to stem the scourge of corruption by smuggling syndicates.

Zahid said he will raise his proposal at the Cabinet meeting today for the army to “fully” take over Malaysian borders.

“It is high time for the army to be put in charge of the borders as it is not only about security, but also defence. It is the country’s first line of defence and I have always felt this way, even when I was defence minister.

“The issue of institutionalised corruption, where these law enforcement officers know the syndicate members well, must be arrested once and for all,” he was quoted telling local daily New Straits Times (NST).
