Malaysian villagers beg spirits to end quake aftershocks

Borneo tribal shamans chanted age-old prayers on Saturday in a ceremony in Malaysia aimed at soothing spirits and bringing an end to disturbing aftershocks from an earthquake that killed 18 people.

About 100 members of the Kadazan Dusun, the largest tribal group in the Malaysian state of Sabah, held the ritual in the state’s Tamparuli district after a 5.1-magnitude aftershock shook the area on Saturday.

Enough for court action against ‘stripper’ tourists to be lesson for all, Sabah minister says

By JULIA CHAN

KOTA KINABALU, June 13 — The three-day jail sentence for four foreign tourists who stripped on Mount Kinabalu should suffice to teach a lesson against disrespecting Sabah’s native customs and beliefs, state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said.

The Sabah minister said many had expressed to him their disappointment that the sentence seemed lenient, but he stressed that the court action was a sufficient lesson.

“To me it isn’t about the severity of the sentence. Whether it’s fair or lenient, this is an important lesson for everyone. People who visit should respect the local customs. We can learn from this, and the message conveyed is quite strong,” he said.

“It is a wake-up call to tourists not to ignore local traditions and culture,” said Masidi, adding that more notice will be given to inform visitors to Mount Kinabalu of the dos and don’ts.

Give us ten buffalo or face prison, Malaysian tribal chief tells mountain strippers

A Malaysian tribal chief has called on Western tourists who were arrested for stripping naked on top of a mountain to pay a fine of ten buffalo or face jail, it has been reported.

Former British public schoolgirl Eleanor Hawkins is among the group accused of ‘upsetting the gods’ by posing nude on the country’s highest peak days before an earthquake killed 18 climbers on the mountain.

Eleanor, 24, from Derby, was detained at a Sabah airport yesterday while trying to fly to Kuala Lumpur. …

Last night it was reported that one local tribal chief had called on the tourists to pay a ‘sogit’ or fine of ten buffalo or face jail.

Priest Tindarama Aman Sirom Simbuna said: ‘The tourists who angered the guardian of the mountain should pay for their mistakes by giving sogit.

‘This should be in the form of ten male or female buffalo’.

Indigenous people say Mount Kinabalu – where the group posed for their photo – is a resting place for the spirits of the departed.

Downy Ladzou, 60, who performed a ritual known as monolob to appease mountain spirits in October last year, said the group should be told the consequences of their actions. The mountain is considered scared to the native community, which believes it is the final resting place of souls of the dead. … Although no date has been set yet for the monolob ritual, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also the Kadazandusun community’s Huguan Siou or Paramount Leader, said: “We need to perform one as soon as possible.” … Ladzou is the leader of four remaining bobolians in Kiau-Nuluh and they have been given the task of performing monolob rituals for several years now. Their elder, Lunsing Koroh, 96, is still alive but can no longer carry out the ritual because of his age.

Canadian siblings barred from leaving Malaysia following earthquake

Two Canadian siblings have been barred from leaving Malaysia after being blamed for an earthquake that struck Mount Kinabalu, in Malaysia Borneo, on Friday.
According to Malaysian police reports, Lindsey Petersen, 23, and Danielle Petersen, 22, are two of five tourists who have been identified as disrespecting the mountain, considered a sacred place in the indigenous culture of Sabah.
According to a Malaysian news outlet, rescuers recovered the bodies of 19 climbers from the 4,095-metre peak after it was struck, six days after the errant tourists’ visit, by a magnitude 5.9 quake that sent rocks and boulders raining down on trekking routes, trapping dozens of climbers. Nationalities of those killed have not yet been released.
Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan, of the eastern Sabah state, blamed the earthquake on the group that included the Canadians because they “showed disrespect to the sacred mountain” by stripping down to pose naked on the morning of May 30, at the 8 km mark of the two-day trek up Mount Kinabalu, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Ten tourists undressed and took photos, which was reported by their protesting guide, according to police. Only five have been identified by name so far.
According to police they are Canadian brother and sister Lindsey Petersen and Danielle Petersen, two Dutch citizens named Eleanor Hawrins and Dylan Thomas, and a German citizen named Stephan Pohlner. …
When the Star reached the siblings’ father, Floyd Petersen, in Wood Mountain, Sask., south of Moose Jaw, by phone on Saturday, he was unaware of their current situation. Petersen said he had not spoken to either of his children for a couple of days. They typically only phone home periodically, he said.
He did confirm, however, that they were travelling together in Malaysia and weren’t due to return to Canada for a couple of weeks. He did not know who they were traveling with. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/2015/06/06/canadian-siblings-barred-from-leaving-malaysia-following-earthquake.html

Pairin: Naked tourist brought on mountain’s wrath

By JULIA CHAN

KUNDASANG, June 6 — The earthquake that has so far claimed 11 lives here was caused by the sacrilegious act of a group of Europeans who stripped naked on the peak of Mount Kinabalu, according to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan. The Huguon Siou (paramount leader of the Kadazandusun) condemned the “uncivilised” and disrespectful actions of the 10 Europeans, and called for the culprits to be brought to a native court and charged according to local customs. “Whether other people believe this or not, it’s what we Sabahans believe. When the earthquake happened, it’s like a confirmation of our beliefs. “It is a sacred mountain and you cannot take it lightly,” he said in a press conference to announce the latest death toll at the Sabah Parks headquarters here today. Locals who live at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu here believe that the mountain is sacred and carries the spirit of their ancestors. Pairin said he had a premonition that something bad was going to happen earlier this week when he saw a flight of swallows circling outside his house during breakfast.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government has declared that ten Europeans including four women who climbed Mount Kinabalu on May 30 and stripped bare on its summit in the south peak area, and thereby violated the sanctity of the place, will be asked to leave the state immediately. Mount Kinabalu is considered sacred by the Orang Asal as the dwelling place of their ancestors and the resting place of their spirits. Following the incident, it’s learnt that the mountain dwellers further down would have to call their traditional priestess to cleanse the south peak area. “Those who posed naked on Mount Kinabalu will be kicked out from Sabah if they are still found to be in the state,” said a furious Masidi Manjun, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister. “Such behaviour definitely violates the sanctity of our sacred sites.” … Sabah Parks has since lodged a police report against the 27 foreigners, including the ten errant ones, who went nude for their photo shoot in the south peak area. Sabah Parks Director Jamil Nais said his Department has handed the names of the 27 tourists to the police. “We are not sure whether the ten errant ones are still in Sabah,” he added. “Why would anyone want to take off their clothes in such cold weather? It seems to be a trend from elsewhere.” Sabah Parks has a report from the guide who led the foreigners to the summit. Apparently, he tried to stop them taking off their clothes but they abused him by calling him “stupid” and told him to “go to hell”. The guide has been issued a show cause letter by Sabah Parks for not reporting the incident immediately to its station at Laban Rata half-way up the mountain or at its headquarters in Kinabalu Park. Sabah Parks is also investigating why such a large group had only one guide. http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2015/06/03/masidi-kinabalu-nudists-must-leave-sabah/ — Free Malaysia Today

Warned not to strip, naked tourists allegedly told guide to ‘go to hell’

By JULIA CHAN

KOTA KINABALU, June 2 — The group of 10 tourists, believed to include two Canadians, two Dutch and a German national, who stripped naked for photographs at the peak of Mount Kinabalu allegedly called their mountain guide “stupid” and told him to “go to hell” when he attempted to stop them from removing their clothes.

Sabah Parks director Dr Jamili Nais said that the guide was in charge of a group of 27 Europeans during an expedition on May 10 and about 10 from the group — six men and four women — broke away to pose for pictures in South Peak, on the west side of the summit’s plateau.

“The guide involved said he had approached the group and told them not to do it but was rebuffed with the words ‘stupid’ and ‘go to hell’,” said Jamili when contacted by Malay Mail Online.

“Unfortunately, the guide did not report the incident right away for action to be taken on the same day. “We have since lodged a police report for further investigations to be taken against the climbers,” he said, adding that the guide involved was also reprimanded for not reporting the incident earlier.

Butt naked? Authorities probing reports of nude tourists on Mount Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU, June 2 — Authorities are investigating reports that a group of tourists stripped naked for photographs on the peak of Mount Kinabalu here. Sabah Parks director Dr Jamili Nais said they were aware of the photographs and were looking into the case. The images being posted on Facebook and spread through Whatsapp show a group of Caucasian-looking adults in various states of undress and posing on what appears to be the distinctive Low’s peak on Mount Kinabalu. Mount Kinabalu, part of the Kinabalu Park World Heritage Site, is sacred to the locals, some of whom deem it the final resting place of their ancestors. The local Dusun community still hold yearly sacrificial rituals to appease the spirits and ask for permission for the safety of their climbers. – See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/butt-naked-authorities-probing-reports-of-nude-tourists-on-mount-kinabalu?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed#sthash.0Oby2fWF.dpuf

Sabah Parks orders probe into foreigners urinating near Mt Kinabalu peak

KOTA KINABALU: A photograph of five foreigners supposedly urinating close to the peak of Mount Kinabalu has gone viral on Facebook, triggering outrage among Sabahans who consider the peak sacred. In the picture, which was taken from a distance, the five people could be seen urinating with the peak of the mountain clearly in the background. Sabah Parks has been ordered to investigate the matter to see if the incident really did take place or if the picture was doctored, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun. Sabah Parks, he said, was checking with the mountain guides if any of them had knowledge of foreigners urinating near the peak of the mountain. “It could have been a superimposed photograph. We are doing a full investigation,” he said when contacted here yesterday.
