Anwar wants us to step out of his shadow…

INTERVIEW | For almost two decades, Anwar Ibrahim has been the opposition’s bedrock, a political titan who had cast a long shadow over those opposed to BN.

It is a shadow that his party PKR has struggled to step out of, even in his long absence due to imprisonment over sodomy charges.

Reverence for Anwar had even stymied Pakatan Harapan at one point, with PKR’s insistence on giving him a top position and delaying the formation of the coalition’s leadership lineup for weeks.

Still, he remains highly regarded, with many still deferring to his judgement or invoking his name in their struggles.

But as the 14th general election (GE14) looms, Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah feels that it is time for the opposition to step into the light.

“At the end of the day I think even Anwar himself wants us to move beyond his shadow,” the PKR vice-president told Malaysiakini in an interview on Thursday.

Her remarks echo that of Anwar’s symbolic statement in June this year, that he would not be seeking a position as Harapan’s candidate for prime minister.

His statement came amid long, drawn-out arguments between Harapan and its then-newest member Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia on who should head the new government.

Many in PKR, DAP and Amanah insisted that Anwar was the only choice, but the former opposition leader said such arguments were distracting the coalition from more important matters, such as preparing for GE14.

GE14 will likely be the first time since 2008 that Anwar has not been on the ground campaigning for the opposition.

He is currently serving a five-year jail term, but is expected to be freed by the middle of 2018 on good behaviour.

Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah on the road…

Trial judge ordered Anwar case evidence sealed, lawyer says

PETALING JAYA, Feb 27 — A defence counsel in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy hearing confirmed the High Court judge had reminded the parties involved that evidence in-camera adduced by Saiful Bukhari Azlan “stay within” the courtroom.

Gobind Singh Deo, who represented Anwar in the Federal Court appeal, said this following claims that prosecutor under fiat Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had revealed details of in-camera proceedings during a public forum last week.

“It was clearly expressed (in the proceeding notes) by the trial judge (Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah) that such matters must not be reproduced,” said Gobind.

“As such, the attorney-general should state if his office had committed contempt of court as the order was made in the presence of then former solicitor-general II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and it was pronounced in open court.”

According to the notes of the court proceedings made available to Malay Mail, Mohamad Zabidin had said: “I would like to remind parties here that today’s proceeding is in camera, that means whatever evidence adduced stays within these four walls.”

He said although Shafee only appeared on behalf of the prosecution at the appeal level, he would have known about the matter through the records.

It’s payback time, Khairy tells Anwar supporters

PETALING JAYA, Feb 17 — Umno Youth will embark on a series of public forums to explain the Federal Court’s conviction of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy and rebut claims of political persecution by the opposition leader, the movement’s chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

Despite acknowledging calls for the attacks against Anwar to stop since he was already convicted, the sports and youth minister defended the campaign as necessary to preserve Umno’s “dignity” against the long-standing allegations.

“Why do we do this? To explain the case further? Because for six years, and this has been the basis of their defence, that it was a political conspiracy by Barisan Nasional and Umno, and as a political party you expect us to keep quiet?

“For six years we have allowed them to criticise us freely and we just waited because we wanted to respect the judicial process… up until the latest case we kept quiet.

“Do not expect us to keep quiet after six years of silence,” Khairy told the forum.

When announcing today’s forum earlier this week, Khairy had labelled the event as an opportunity for “keyboard warriors” and supporters of Anwar to go “face-to-face” with Shafee.

Several blogs reported that a group of PKR members urged the party’s leadership to appoint Dr Mahathir as chairman to replace Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was jailed for sodomy.

The members gathered in front of PKR headquarters in Tropicana Damansara, Petaling Jaya with banners calling on the leadership to appoint Dr Mahathir as the chairman.

PKR claims members seeking Dr M as Anwar replacement aligned with Khalid

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — PKR dismissed today the protest by several party members calling for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to replace Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as their de facto chief, claiming they were part of a renegade group aligned with the now-expelled Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the group had protested outside PKR’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya, but said those involved were part of a “renegade group”.

“The person who brought the issue up is a renegade party member,” he told the Malay Mail Online via text, “aligned with (the) expelled (Tan Sri) Khalid Ibrahim.”

“We believe he is a sleeper agent,” he added.

Bernama reported later that Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin called the protest a sign of desperation on the part of PKR.

“They (PKR) are desperate and have nobody else to turn to for help,” Muyhiddin said. “So, they decided to go for him (Dr Mahathir).”

UTRAJAYA, Feb 10 — With Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sentenced to five years behind bars, his family members said while they are devastated, they hope his supporters will take up the Opposition Leader’s fight to topple the government through peaceful means.

Anwar’s eldest daughter Nurul Izzah labelled today’s court decision a “cruel outcome” not just for her family but also for the country.

“It is now up to the people to overthrow (the government) through peaceful means. Emboldened, yes we are sad, devastated, (but) we will continue the struggle,” the PKR vice-president told reporters.

Anwar’s wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the PKR de facto leader had told his family to be strong and bear with this, as Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) fight must go on.

“This is a sacrifice for the future of the country. Fight for justice and against injustice.

“Anwar said you can imprison him but he goes in with his head held high,” she said.

“We have to bear through this, we have tears. I’m not saying we are all that strong, but we hope the people will be with us. We find strength with the people,” she added.

A new direction?

Clive Kessler, professor in Sociology at the University of New South Wales, “New Malaysian politics, post-Anwar, will need not just a Pakatan three-wheeler vehicle, but a new kind of political mobilisation…It has been about trying to hold this coalition together in time for the next election and trying to overthrow Barisan Nasional. That is not sustainable. They need to sit down and think of winnable policies for the longer term and move beyond Anwar.”

Anwar verdict highlights need for Pakatan Rakyat to remain united, resolve squabbles

Published: February 11, 2015 08:17 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 ― The imprisonment of Malaysian opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will provide the disparate, multi-ethnic coalition he headed with some momentum to resolve differences even as the longer-term challenge to stay united remains.

Anwar’s five-year sentence and a five-year political ban upon release is forcing his three-member Pakatan Rakyat alliance to choose a new leader. The group must pursue an inclusive agenda to stay relevant and challenge the Barisan Nasional coalition that’s ruled for almost six decades, according to Clive Kessler, a sociology professor at the University of New South Wales.

Pakatan Rakyat, or People’s Alliance, has little in common aside from its desire to oust Barisan Nasional. It was wracked by infighting last year over the leadership of one state it controls and the planned implementation of Islamic law in another. While the first squabble was resolved, the issue of hudud is looming as one coalition party plans to table a bill next month to pave the way for its implementation.

Friction over religious rights and ethnic tolerance is increasing in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority nation that has a sizable Chinese and Indian minority. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s party has brought in policies to shore up support with its ethnic Malay Muslim base since its worst-ever showing in the 2013 general election.

“Pakatan has some serious challenges in terms of leadership but Anwar has taken a backseat in the past six to eight months and him going to jail will allow Pakatan to transition to the next phase of leadership,” said Andrew Aeria, a political science associate professor at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. “Will this end Pakatan? I doubt it.”

For Pakatan Rakyat, the immediate challenge is to find a leader to keep all three parties united. One probable candidate is Selangor Chief Minister Azmin Ali, the Star reported yesterday, citing political academics.
