Thousands of fish were reported jumping out of the sea onto land in Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department said no seismic activity has been recorded off the coast of Lahad Datu, where earlier, thousands of fish were reported jumping out of the sea onto land, Tuesday morning.

Its director-general Che Gayah Ismail said though such an incident was usually seen as a sign of a possible tsunami, the department said no red flags have been raised in its detection centres there.

However, Che Gayah was puzzled at what could have caused the strange occurrence.

“From our data, this has actually happened before in Lahad Datu a couple of years ago. I do not know what could be causing this off hand, we will have to study more than just the online video,” she told The Star.

Thousands of Tamban fish beach themselves at Tabisan, Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Thousands of fishes splashed into the shores of Kg Tabisan in Sabah’s eastern Lahad Datu district sparking speculations of what omen it brings in the year end.

Villagers rushed to scoop up the fishes, locally known as Tamban, while others were divided over whether it was good omen or bad omen.

However, local villager Suzila Abdullah, who operates a sundry shop in the village, said that the phenomenon had been occurring in the past three years.

“But it is different this year because the number of fishes are exceptionally high.

“In the past, most would have been scooped up by the end of the day but today there is still a lot more left,’’ she said when contacted by on Tuesday.

Are they really sensitive to radiation from Fukushima or it’s because of an earthquake nearby?

I’d say more due to P-wave and S-wave from natural seismic activities in the region. These small god-created creatures couldn’t handle or just sensitive to the vibes /pressure coming from the travelling waves. Check on USGS’s earthquake monitoring website if there’s any earthquake took place with epicenter ‘facing’ Lahad Datu Bay at earlier time. The waves travel fast in water. Similar events might have been recorded right around the major Tsunami in Acheh.in 2004…just my two cents!

    Evacuation should be done.
