Singapore’s MRT ‘Samurai swordsman’ gets 7 weeks jail

In December 2013, swordsmanship instructor Peter Chua, 39, put on a samurai outfit and carried a Japanese sword known as a “katana” into Paya Lebar MRT Station.

He poked a passenger’s stomach with the weapon, pushed a security officer who tried to approach him, and then boarded a train, wielding his sword in front of terrified commuters before he was arrested near Bugis MRT station.

For that, he has been jailed for seven weeks, reported local news outlets.

MRT Sword-wielding ‘samurai’ identified

[UPDATED on 18 December at 3:40pm: adding information on man’s identification]

The man who was arrested after jumping an MRT fare gate and wielding a samurai sword has been identified as one Peter Chua.

Police confirmed with Yahoo Singapore that the man is 39 years old, and has the surname Chua. Local media reported his first name is Peter, and have linked him to a Facebook profile of one Peter Chua who calls himself “an expert swordsman” and a tattoo artist.

Images of the user behind the Facebook profile bear strong resemblance to one of the instructors, or sensei, of an Iaido club called Eishin Ryu Iaido Singapore. A check by Yahoo Singapore on the Eishin Ryu Iaido blog does list a “Peter Chua Sensei” as one of the club’s two instructors.

On Monday, Chua, who appeared to be dressed up as a samurai and wielding a sword scared passengers on an MRT train when he boarded it.
