Is the man who built collapsing mosque roofs still building them?

IT’S NOT JUST SERDANG HOSPITAL THAT HAS SUCH SERIOUS DEFECTS.
SEVERAL PUBLIC HOSPITALS HAD THOUSANDS OF DEFECTS!
Malaysiakini
The research by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) researchers was presented at a Singapore conference.
Their findings on 4 hospitals
In one hospital, 8,518 defects were found, mostly due to poor workmanship, including faulty plumbing, fire protection and ventilation system.
In another, 6,261 defects were identified, including faulty roofing and cracks in its structure due to poor design, materials used and workmanship.
Another hospital had 5,473 defects, also due to poor design, workmanship and materials, resulting in poor finishing and bad sanitary installations as well.
The last hospital had 2,743 defects, mostly on the architectural side, leading to poor quality ceilings, walls, flooring and doors.
Ambiguity over contractual obligations
The researchers found that while the defects were eventually rectified by the contractors concerned, there was “ambiguity” over their contractual obligations.
One senior manager at a hospital studied was quoted as saying that there were “discrepancies between what is actually put up and the as-built drawings”.

OF THE FALLING DOWN OF SERDANG HOSPITAL’S CEILING, THERE SEEMS NO END!
The 620-bed hospital was completed in 2005 at a cost of RM690 million. However, ceiling collapses have become a recurring problem at the hospital since the first one in 2011.

The contractor who built the RM690 million Serdang Hospital has refused to comment on the string of ceiling collapses since 2011, six years after the hospital opened its doors.
When contacted, Ranhill Bhd refused to say anything, stressing that the matter was still under investigation by the Public Works Department (PWD).
Dr S Subramaniam’s statement that the hospital’s contractor could be hauled to court after the seventh reported ceiling collapse in Hospital Serdang.
Neither Subramaniam nor Works Minister Fadillah Yusof have publicly identified the contractor.

When a person goes to a hospital, he or she expects to be treated and to leave the place in a healthier state. The last thing a patient should be concerned about is the roof caving in.
But that is the situation in Serdang Hospital, where on rainy days, both patients and staff, keep gazing at the ceilings with dread.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Vimala Singram (right), said her brother who has been admitted in the hospital for dengue since last month, has been afraid of such a mishap happening.
“My brother is very worried, especially when it rains. First they said it was new building, and that was why the roof collapsed. But it has happened so many times,” Viimala, 50, said.
Since the first incident on Jan 30, 2011, there have been seven such cases, four of which took place this year.
She then revealed how she witnessed one of the incidents in 2011.
“It was near the registration counter, where the glass ceiling collapsed. Luckily, it happened after 5pm (when there were less people around),” she said.

YAHOO! NEWS SINGAPORE
SERDANG, Dec 11 — Occupants of Serdang Hospital staff quarters were not surprised by news of yesterday’s ceiling collapse — the seventh at the hospital.
They said they had been complaining about various problems plaguing their quarters, and said the ceiling collapse was not the first incident.
One resident, Kavi, 30, said the ceiling panels in two of her apartment’s bathrooms collapsed earlier this year.
She also experienced plumbing and water supply problems, which she referred to Radicare, the contractor responsible for the quarters’ maintenance.
“They came to inspect the plumbing and told us it was a major problem. The whole plumbing system in the building was faulty, affecting each and every apartment in the building,” said Kavi, an administrative staff at the hospital.
The ceiling right outside her apartment was also leaking, causing fungus to grow on the walls.
“I have asked Radicare to do something about it but it has been months and they haven’t even come to clean the fungus off the walls.”

Why is Putrajaya protecting identity of Serdang Hospital contractor, asks DAP
BY LEE SHI-IAN
December 11, 2013
DAP ticked off Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam today for refusing to take responsibility for the series of mishaps at the RM690 million Serdang Hospital since it opened in 2005.
Party national publicity assistant secretary Teo Nie Ching (pic) said until today, neither the Works or Health Minister has dared to reveal the identity of the main contractor for the hospital.
Teo, the Kulai MP, said she had previously urged Dr Subramaniam to give guarantees that ceiling collapses would not recur following the collapse of the ceiling in the maternity ward on September 30.
…
Teo pointed out that there have been at least six incidents reported at the Serdang Hospital since it began operations in December 2005, which is probably a world record.
“What is shameful is that until today, Putrajaya has remained silent on the identity of the main contractor and who should be held responsible for the ceiling collapses,” she said.
Despite numerous reminders to the Health Ministry about the dangers posed by such collapses to medical staff, who work long hours, Teo said nothing had been done to address the problem.

A hospital staff’s wife and four children narrowly escaped injury when a portion of a ceiling at Serdang Hospital caved in yesterday.
This makes it the fourth report of such incident at the hospital in 2013 alone.
According to Utusan Malaysia, the incident happened at 1pm at a toilet at the Block D staff quarters, barely a week since the last collapse.
“Damages to the quarters do not only involve the ceiling, but also includes damages to water pipes and flooring.
“This caused stress among the staff who are believed to have decided to move to other quarters or rent homes outside the hospital,” the daily reported.
Last week, a similar collapse happened at the trauma and emergency department, but no injuries were reported.

“It is understood that the location of the collapse is near an area where patients are placed, and following that it has been closed for repairs,” the report said.
No one was reportedly injured in the incident.

The workmanship of the country’s infrastructures is again under the spotlight after a section of the ceiling at Serdang Hospital collapsed, the second such incident in two days.
Serdang Hospital itself has been plagued by a series of falling ceilings and this is the third time the medical facility has experienced such a mishap in recent years.
According to Bernama, the ceiling of the hospital’s maternity ward collapsed at around 2.55am but no injuries were reported.
…
Last August, a doctor and three nurses were hurt when Serdang Hospital’s emergency department collapsed.
And in January 2011, the ceiling of the hospital’s main lobby came apart, costing the government RM800,000 in repair works.
