Malaysia Lends Support to Breast Cancer Awareness
Miss Malaysia World Melinder Bhullar took centre stage this weekend during the Pink Ribbon Campaign 2013, promoting Breast Cancer Awareness in Malaysia.
Engaged by Wacoal Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Melinder and the first runner up at Miss Malaysia World 2013 have been taking to the stage at various places over the past few days, sharing their knowledge on breast cancer prevention and on how to lead a healthy lifestyle. The Pink Ribbon Campaign events held in Miri, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching were a rousing success, drawing large crowds who were engaged not only by talks on stage, but also with a variety of give-aways, fun activities and also Wacoal’s experienced advisors.
Melinder said that she” really enjoyed myself, engaging the public in so many different activities & sharing my knowledge on breast cancer awareness over the past few days.”
As part of its 2013 Pink Ribbon initiatives, proceeds generated from Wacoal Malaysia’s nationwide Pink Ribbon donation drive in the month of October will be channeled to charitable organisations to benefit Malaysian women.
“The fight against breast cancer or Pink Ribbon Campaign is a cause that is very close to the heart of Wacoal,” said Wacoal Malaysia executive director Takashi Watanabe.

Breast cancer afflicts men too
PASSERS-BY threw curious glances when 70 rugged-looking motorcyclists and breast cancer survivors in pink shirts hit the road on big motorcycles from Kuala Lumpur to Seremban recently to spread awareness that breast cancer also affected men.
The group caught the attention of bystanders and motorists as they left Menara Hap Seng to head towards Aeon Seremban 2 shopping centre in Seremban.
The awareness campaign, themed “Bums on Bikes for Breast Cancer”, is part of the Breast Awareness Cancer Month campaign aimed at raising awareness on breast cancer, especially in men, and educating the public on the importance of early detection to save lives.
The event was organised by Harley Owners Group (Malaysian Chapter) and the Pink Challengers, Malaysia’s first Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat team.

Pink Challengers team manager Barbara Delaney said they wanted to show that both men and women who have cancer can still lead a full and healthy life after medical treatment.
“Early detection saves lives. It does not matter if you’re a man or woman. If the cancer is detected early, you’ll have a chance to do what we’re doing — living life,” said the 59-year-old.

What is male breast cancer?
Men possess a small amount of nonfunctioning breast tissue (breast tissue that cannot produce milk) that is concentrated in the area directly behind the nipple on the chest wall. Like breast cancer in women, cancer of the male breast is the uncontrolled growth of the abnormal cells of this breast tissue.
How common is male breast cancer?
Male breast cancer is a rare condition, accounting for only about 1% of all breast cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, about 1,970 new cases of breast cancer in men would be diagnosed and that breast cancer would cause approximately 390 deaths in men (in comparison, almost 40,000 women die of breast cancer each year). Breast cancer is 100 times more common in women than in men. Most cases of male breast cancer are detected in men between the ages of 60 and 70, although the condition can develop in men of any age. A man’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is about 1/10 of 1%, or one in 1,000.
