Wira – the choice of car thieves

zzzcar.jpg

EXCLUSIVE: PETALING JAYA: The Proton Wira, which has little value in the used car market, is surprisingly a hot item among thieves.
.
Last year, statistics showed this model was number one on the stolen cars list. A total of 654 cars were reported stolen.General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) chief executive Mark Lim said the cars were definitely stolen for the parts.

“We believe the stolen vehicles were cannibalised and the parts sold as production of spare parts for this model has been stopped and the parts are difficult to obtain in the market,” he said in an interview with The Star.

A Proton spare parts dealer in Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur said many of the Wira’s interior items are no longer in production.

These include the dashboard, instrument panel, control panels, cushions, speedometer, handbrake lever, steering and other smaller items inside the car.

“The parts are scattered and difficult to find in the market. Even if they are available, the items could be the last few from the old stock.”

He said many Proton Wira spare parts were becoming more difficult to find as the items were no longer in production.

The industry, he said, had been told by Proton Wira spare parts manufacturers that the company planned to cease the production of parts for this model by the year’s end as it is no longer economically viable to make it.

The only option, he said, was to find the spare parts at the “potong-kereta” outlets. Proton Wira was produced between early 1993 and June 2009.

In its 16 years production, 952,216 units were sold. It has been estimated that at least 85% of the models are still on the road.

Cars are more expensive than houses?

za

Owning a car in Malaysia is expensive. In one of my previous articles, I highlighted that Malaysia was ranked second in the world where owning a car is expensive.

But what many do not know is by how much, relative to homes. Yes, homes in Malaysia are expensive too, but relative to Australian homes and cars, our cars are 10 times more expensive than those sold in Australia compared to homes. Let’s do some simple math together.

Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) reported that the median house price in Malaysia is about RM250,000. This is the cost of two Honda Civics (priced at RM110,000 per car).

zat.JPG

In Australia, the median house price is A$660,000, while a Honda Civic costs about A$30,000. This means, a median-priced Australian house of A$660,000 can buy 22 Honda Civics, versus a median-priced Malaysian house of RM250,000 which can only buy two cars of the same model. Yes, our homes may not be cheap but our cars are more expensive in comparison.

I further compared Malaysia against the United States and United Kingdom. A median-priced house in US and UK can buy 12 and 16 Honda Civics respectively, which is still more affordable compared to the two which can be bought with a median-priced Malaysian house.

Come January next year, prices of Honda vehicles are set to increase by two to three per cent due to the depreciation of the ringgit.

Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Yoichiro Ueno said since the introduction of Honda models with its current price list, the ringgit has depreciated by 20 to 30 per cent against the US dollar.

“The drastic depreciation of the ringgit has caused a significant increase to the cost of imported parts and components.

Singaporeans are a pretty laid back bunch and have no qualms leaving the house in shorts and slippers.

But if you’re driving across the Causeway, be sure to put on a proper pair of shoes!

Because police in Malaysia apparently have no qualms about issuing summons for those who drive in a pair of slippers.

And they don’t give face even if you’re a Malaysian too!

This parking summon was issued to a driver in Petra Jaya, a town in Kuching, Sarawak.

The reason – driving in flip-flops.

Trio abandon stolen car and flee in another

ALOR SETAR: Three men high on the wanted list for a spate of luxury car theft cases stole two vehicles to escape the police after one of them was allegedly shot in Kuala Kedah here.

The trio were in a Honda City when four unmarked police vehicles from the Bukit Aman Special Task Force on Organised Crime suddenly blocked their way at a petrol kiosk. The driver in his bid to escape then rammed their vehicle into the police cars.

Kedah CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Nashir Ya said the Bukit Aman team had no choice but to open fire but the suspects managed to speed off during the incident at about noon yesterday.

“They then grabbed a red Proton Persona belonging to a customer at a Pendang petrol kiosk, more than 30km away from Kuala Kedah.

“Their Honda City, which was stolen in Kepong on April 2, was abandoned and blood stains were found in the car leading us to believe that one of them could have been shot,” he told reporters at the scene yesterday.

ACP Mohd Nashir said five bullet shells were found at the scene and the police were trying to determine if any gunshots came from the suspects.

“We received information that the men abandoned the Proton Persona in Bukit Tengah and fled in a Volkswagen stolen from a showroom nearby at about 2.30pm.

From Pendang to Prai, luxury car thefts continue

By PRIYA PUBALAN – 18 April 2015 @ 7:59 PM

PRAI: The three suspects involved in the theft of luxury cars at Pendang, Kedah this morning have escaped with a stolen green Golf GTI from the Juru Volkswagen showroom located in Bukit Mertajam this afternoon.

The car belonged to one of the customers who was servicing the car at the time in the outlet. In the 2.25pm incident, the suspects obtained security passes from the guard on the pretext of visiting the showroom.

“However, instead of the showroom they drove the initial stolen red Proton Persona to the servicing area and picked up the car with its keys still inside belonging to one of our customer. “By the time the customer ran out to activate the alarm, they had escaped the premises,” said Juru Volkswagen security manager who wish to remain anonymous.

According to the guard, the suspects fooled him by claiming the car belonged to one of them and would like to test drive the car after servicing.

PARLIAMENT The government is confident that Proton will be able to compete with imported cars as it is on par with international marques like BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Honda.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) based this on the five-star international rating the national car manufacturer received from Asutralasian Car Assesment Program (ANCAP) and ASEAN NCAP for its safety features.

“The production of Proton’s newest models display advanced technology, quality and performance and is on par with imported cars.

“This recognition enables Proton models to be equivalent with renowned manufacturers like BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Honda,” said minister Mustapa Mohamed in a written reply to V Sivakumar (DAP-Batu Gajah).

Sivakumar had asked the ministry if Proton is able to compete with imported or foreign-made cars and would the amount of cars produced be sufficient for the local market.

http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/294377

It noted that the national carmaker gained international acclaim when it earned five stars from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) and Asean NCAP.

“This rating puts the Proton car models on par with other popular car makes like BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Honda,” the ministry said.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — Malaysia’s Proton is on par with other premium vehicle brands like BMW, Putrajaya insisted to Parliament when asked if the national carmaker has what it takes to compete with its international rivals.

In a written reply to Batu Gajah MP V. Sivakumar’s question last Thursday, the International Trade and Industry Ministry said many of Proton’s newer models display “advanced technology, high quality and performance”.

“Some Proton models even offer features of added value in terms of comfort and safety of passengers,” the ministry said in its reply.

As examples, the ministry said models like the Proton Exora, Preve, Suprima S and Iriz come complete with safety technology such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control System and the Electronic Stability Control.

Vehicle prices generally lower with GST: Customs DG

22 March 2015 @ 10:12 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: On the whole, vehicle prices will be lower from April 1 with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), said Customs director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.

He explained that the GST was six per cent while the current vehicle sales tax was 10 per cent. The vehicle sales tax will be abolished on April 1, he said.

Khazali told Bernama the doubt over whether the prices would rise or drop came about from the confusion among car dealers as to how they were going to dispose of the vehicles for which they had already paid the 10 per cent vehicle sales tax.

“The Customs will reimburse the dealers the 10 per cent tax once they produce documented proof that they have paid the tax but had yet to sell the vehicle as of March 31,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association president Khoo Kah Jin said he did not expect a significant drop in vehicle prices as the difference was likely to be offset by the prices of imported vehicle components due to the higher exchange rate.

“The vehicle prices will go down by between two and three per cent with the GST,” he said.

“However, the prices may increase slightly depending on the foreign exchange rate because most vehicle components are imported, for example from the United States, Europe and Japan,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6:

The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2015 should stimulate demand for vehicles with the reduction of prices due to the abolishment of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), said Malaysian Automotive Institute (MAI) chief executive officer Mohamad Madani Sahari.

The SST of 10% will be abolished on April 1, 2015 and replaced with the GST which is set at 6%.

“This should stimulate demand for cars and we do not expect any major impact on prices due to the implementation of the GST,” he said at the sidelines of the MAI-Lafarge Automotive and Logistics Safety Exhibition 2014 here today.

Bank Negara Malaysia’s credit-tightening policy and stiffer competition have affected Perodua and Proton’s market shares in recent months.

Total vehicles sales in Malaysia is growing 9.2 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) and 4.7 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) to 58,561 units in June, driven by stronger performance from the non-national passenger vehicle segment. The national car segment has fallen.

Proton vs Perodua: Cornering the compact segment

THE country’s two national car companies are set to intensify their rivalry with the launch of new compact models as they move to arrest sliding sales and boost market share.

Proton Holdings Bhd is banking on its Global Small Car (GSC) to make a “hurtful” challenge on the hugely popular Perodua Myvi in the B-segment of the local car market.

See: P2-30A: PROTON’S GLOBAL SMALL CAR (GSC)

Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), which has been Malaysia’s top-selling car company for the past eight years, is turning to the smaller Axia model in the A-segment to boost sales.

See:The new Perodua Axia!

Analysts said the companies could see sales affected in the second half of the year as their main market — the lower income consumers — is seeing higher loan rejection rates following tigher credit assessment for car loans after the rise in interest rates recently.

However, Proton GSC and Perodua Axia could sway the tide in their favour.

The GSC is a Proton Savvy replacement and is known internally as P2-30A. But in the blogsphere, rumours are rife that the five-door hatchback will officially be called “Proton Iriz”.

The 1.6-litre Iriz seems set for its debut within weeks after the launch of the Axia, which is expected to be as early as next week.

The Iriz may not be bargain-basement cheap, though. The car is likely to be in three variants, with prices starting from RM40,000.

“Now Proton wants to produce cars that are of world standard, but you have to pay a higher price. You can’t have a good car and pay a bad car price,” Proton chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as saying last month.

Federal deputy traffic chief Asst Comm Mahamad Akhir Darus said in the first 24 hours since the nationwide crackdown started, 7,097 vehicles had been checked.

“We had 166 operations nationwide during when we executed 662 arrest warrants on errant motorists.

“In total, we detained 343 individuals for outstanding summonses,” he said when contacted yesterday.

In Malacca, traffic staff officer DSP Mohd Sham Abdullah also noted that 1,000 arrest warrants had been served to motorists with unsettled summonses, at roadblocks and via door-to-door notice throughout the state yesterday.

They involved offences committed in the state as well as outstation.

In Penang, 759 people were screened during the first two days of Ops Warta, with 33 traffic offenders held in various roadblocks.

State traffic and public order chief Supt Ibrahim Abu Bakar said 152 offenders were also issued with a notice to pay up when the police visited their homes between 8am on Monday and 1pm yesterday.

Taxpayers’ RM118k spent on sports rims, accessories

AUDIT REPORT The Johor state government spent over RM118,000 for sports rims and other accessories on state-owned cars, according to the Auditor-General’s Report 2013.

This, the report said, was based on an audit of 13 of 81 vehicles belonging to the Johor secretariat office for the period of 2011 to 2013.

“The audit found the state secretariat office (administration) spent a total of RM118,686  for sports rims, leather seats, repainting of cars, change of bumpers, CD/DVD players and other accessories,” read the report.

It criticised the high maintenance cost of the 13 Perdana V6 executive vehicles are between seven to 13 years old, and no longer economical to maintain.

The report pointed out the maintenance cost of the vehicles between 2011 and June 2013 ranged between 39 percent to 95 percent of their original buying price.

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic police have postponed their proposed nationwide operation Ops Cermin Gelap on heavily tinted vehicle windows until further notice.

Federal Traffic chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said they would not make a move on heavily tinted vehicles until the Transport Ministry released its findings on a study that is being carried out on the matter.

He said the Transport Ministry was in the midst of reviewing the rules on vehicle window tinting nationwide.

“It is only appropriate that we take action after a decision is made,” he said.

SAC Mohd Fuad, however, said the operation on illegal licence plates, strobe lights and motorists with outstanding summonses would go on as announced last month.

“We have already given motorists adequate time to rectify their vehicles.

“Those with strobe lights should remove them immediately as we had given them until June 1 to do so.

“Those with illegal licence plates still have until June 16 to rectify those modifications,” he said, urging motorists to abide by the traffic rules and regulations for their own safety.

Thai customs hand over stolen Malaysian cars

BANGKOK, June 10 (Bernama) — Thai Customs Department have recently seized 30 stolen cars, including 13 from Malaysia, worth 21.6 million Baht (RM2.1 million) on transit to a third country.

The cars were shipped from Singapore to Thailand and declared as furniture and new cars, said Thai Customs director-general Rakob Srisupaat.

Meanwhile, an official said Thailand would handover 25 stolen vehicles to the Malaysian authorities by the end of this month.

Although hundreds of stolen Malaysian vehicles were recovered in Thailand, the handover process runs into legal and insurance wrangle, an official said.

“To add insult to injury some of the vehicles were found to be used in criminal activities and ended up as court exhibits. Sending the vehicles home is also costly,” he added.

Wee: New tint ruling may be problematic for car owners

JOHOR BARU: The windows of many imported foreign cars are already tinted during production with levels that are higher than the permitted percentage allowed by authorities here, said MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

This, he said, would cause problems for car owners who were forced to fork out money just to get their tinted windows redone to the new specifications.

“I hope that the Government will review its policy on window tint, including increasing the allowed percentage,” he said after attending the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Associations of Malaysia (FMCCAM) 36th annual general meeting here yesterday.

Under Rule 5(1) and Rule 5(3) of Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991, the minimum light transmission level of the front windscreen is 70% while windows and the rear windscreen must allow at least 50% of light to pass through.

Those who do not revert to the permitted tinting by June 15 could face a RM300 compound when stopped by enforcement authorities.

“Many cars these days come with laminated windows that are darker, giving no allowance for added tinting to enhance the heat reflecting capabilities of car windows without breaking the law.

SUMMONSES ARE PART AND PARCEL OF CAR OWNERSHIP IN MALAYSIA

One day, one of my three sons, studying at university in KL, said, “Sorry, Dad, got a ticket today for illegal parking.”

“That’s alright, a normal thing. One of the costs of using a car, just like tickets for speeding,” I replied.

What else could I say but the truth? After all, I have got my fair share of tickets for speeding, illegal parking and queue-jumping. I pay up.

Once, I met a former student and asked him what he was doing. “This and that,” he said, “and I act as agent for an agent collecting unpaid summonses.”

“Huh?!” was my dumb reply.

He went on to explain how, if I had a RM300 summons, I could give it to him and RM150, and he could settle it for me through the agent of whom he was an agent!

PUTRAJAYA, June 4 — Motorists will know soon if the current tint on their vehicles’ windshields and windows is permissible by law or if they can even go darker.

Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is expected to consider proposals from the two-day Vehicle Tinted Usage Review Workshop, held to determine if the current restrictions should be changed.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the workshop, which ended yesterday, proposed that the current minimum visible light transmittance level (VLT) for the rear windscreen and passenger windows be reduced from 50 per cent to 30 per cent.

“After considering all suggestions and discussions, we decided to retain the current 70 per cent VLT for front windshields and 50 per cent VLT for driver’s side window. Lim Kit Siang for Malaysia

Proton is the price we pay for brainless patriotism

Koon Yew Yin

The founding of Proton National Bhd in 1983 was a big expensive mistake to begin with. Billions of ringgit from taxpayers have been lost in the process.

The haemorrhage could not be stanched until only recently when Khazanah Nasional Berhad sold off its 43 percent stake in Proton to DRB-Hicom a few months ago. Malaysians have been wondering – is this finally an end to the unhappy saga of the government’s foray into the production of a so-called ‘national car’ or will the burden on taxpayers and car owners be continued in other new ways?

A revisit of this white elephant project is necessary to generate a larger public discourse especially amongst taxpayers who should be more concerned as to where all the tax money they’ve been paying has gone to.

One simplistic assumption which appears to have been made by the initiator of the national car project Dr Mahathir Mohamad is that an industry that is growing yearly should be profitable. It is not. In fact, industry data shows that the total profits of all the car companies over the last decades amount to only a modest return, and that only for the fittest in the industry.

Police hava warned vehicle owners using tinted glasses, registration plates which do not meet specifications and beacon lights to change or take them off before a major operation starts on June 16.

Bukit Aman Traffic Police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said the operation was intended to reduce risks of crimes.

“This is because it is difficult for victims to identify suspects in the event of crimes due to the use of tinted glasses and registration numbers which do not meet specifications,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, today.

The use of beacon lights must be approved by the Road Transport Department director-general under Rule 138 (1) of the Road Traffic Rules and illegal users were given until June 1 to take them off off before action was taken.

“We give vehicle owners with dark tinted glasses and registration plates not following specifications until May 15.

Bad attitude of drivers to blame for high fatality rate on Malaysian roads, say netizens

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: PETALING JAYA: Dangerous road conditions and unsafe vehicles are among the reasons given by netizens for Malaysia’s reportedly high road fatality rate, but the biggest contributor to death on the roads is the bad attitude of Malaysians drivers.

In reply to The Star Online’‘s query on road safety, Facebook users came out in droves to castigate Malaysian drivers for their irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel.

Among common deadly driving sins were changing lanes without signalling, using mobile devices while driving, swerving dangerously in and out of traffic, and speeding.

NO, PRICES DIDN’T REALLY COME DOWN LAST YEAR!

EXPERTS IN THE CAR INDUSTRY SAY THAT PRICES CAME DOWN FOR SOME CARS ONLY IN THE SENSE THAT YOU GOT LESS BECAUSE YOU PAID LESS.

If you’re talking about the Saga SV, it has fewer convenience features compared to the Saga FLX, resulting in a 12 percent price drop.

Convenience features are things that are not part of the safety feature. They include the following but are not limited to them:

  • Ground light on lower edge of door
  • Passenger assist strap or handhold
  • Vanity mirror on sun visor
  • Vanity mirror light
  • Passenger compartment dome light
  • Trunk light
  • Carriage side light (a white light on the B or C pillars to assist passengers during entry and exit)
  • Swiveling front seat – the seat rotates toward the door opening so that one can sit in the seat before bringing one’s legs inside of the vehicle.
  • Engine compartment light
  • Window screens
  • Fold up rear seat back
  • Added cushions or pads

Cheaper cars last year? Not exactly …

The roll out of new variants of car models last year may have provided cheaper options to buyers, but industry experts say that – when compared on apple-to-apple basis – prices did not go down.

…the New Honda Jazz which at RM74,800 is 17 percent cheaper than the Honda Jazz had “some of the kit removed”.

“What they have done is they assembled it here and removed some of the kit. It’s the same car but specification levels are a bit different,” said Lim, who is part of leading automotive website paultan.org said.

“When they do this, they bring the pricing down and adjust accordingly. It is actually the removal of features to make the car more competitive. It is actually the initiative of manufacturers themselves, not the government, in making cars cheaper.”

He said manufacturers have taken various approaches to cutting costs, be it on the production line or through retail discounts.

“The government has no direct say in it by saying you must do this and we will give you five percent (less in duties, for instance),” he said.

Cheaper cars last year? Not exactly …

DO YOU WANT AN IMPORTED HYBRID CAR OR ELECTRIC CAR? They will cost more, from RM30,000 up, depending on the model, once exemption of excise duty ends.

Among imported hybrid models are the Toyota Prius and Prius c, Honda Insight, CR-Z, Civic Hybrid and Nissan Serena Hybrid. Exemption of excise duty on these ends on 31 December 2015.

The electric cars are the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Exemption of excise duty on these ends on 31 December 2017.

Under the National Automotive Policy 2014, which was announced by Mustapa yesterday, excise duty exemption would only be given to locally assembled hybrid and electric cars.

Competitive car prices

ASK YOURSELF WHY THE GOVT WON’T CUT EXCISE DUTIES NOW.

It is because of the Government has overspent. It wants to keep collecting Excise duties and other forms of taxes.

It collected RM9.83 billion in tax revenue from the auto industry in 2013.

That is RM9,830,000,000.

Malaysia eases auto curbs to woo foreign makers

By Associated Press, Published: January 20

Malaysia was once Southeast Asia’s top passenger car market but lost out to Thailand years ago, partly due to policies to protect home grown car brands. Import taxes have dropped under the region’s free trade pact but Malaysia imposes excise duties of up to 105 percent that kept prices of foreign cars high.

Mustapa said the government collected 9.83 billion ringgit ($3 billion) in tax revenue from the auto industry last year, with excise duties accounting for 75 percent of the total. The industry contributes about 3.4 percent of gross national product.

Due to the government’s high budget deficit, he ruled out any move to cut excise duties but said the government “is open to the possibility of reducing excise duties gradually” if its fiscal situation improves.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/malaysia-eases-auto-curbs-to-woo-foreign-makers/2014/01/20/5ca040e2-81ba-11e3-a273-6ffd9cf9f4ba_story.html

Excise duties generated RM7,090,000,000 in 2012 !

Together with other forms of taxes, the Federal Government collects RM11,140,000,000-00 in 2012 FROM THE CAR INDUSTRY

The government says (again) that it reduced car prices. That, of course, was refuted by car manufacturers last year.

SOME PEOPLE MAY BELIEVE THAT IF YOU KEEP SAYING THE SAME ENOUGH TIMES, OTHERS WILL EVENTUALLY BELIEVE YOU.

NO, I DON’T AGREE. IT IS MORE CORRECT TO SAY THAT IF YOU KEEP SAYING THE SAME LIE LONG ENOUGH, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY BELIEVE YOUR OWN LIE.

IS THIS THE CASE WITH THE MINISTER OF THE MINISTRY OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INDUSTRY (MITI)? Has he come to believe his own ‘truth’?

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said models such as Saga SV, Persona SV, Viva, Alza, MyVi S Series, the new Honda Jazz and Nissan Almera, which accounted for 30% of market share in 2013, were introduced at reduced prices of between 3% and 17% under the election manifesto last year.

“More new models and variants will be introduced at competitive prices in 2014,” he said, adding for example, that prices of the new Viva introduced in January this year were lower by 2-7%. (20 to 30% cut in car prices over five years)

Proton refutes Utusan report on lower car prices

| June 13, 2013

In a letter circulated on Facebook, a Proton Edar executive said that the reduction in car prices was related to the car maker’s own promotion prices.

In a letter widely circulated on Facebook, Proton’s Head of Network Planning and Development Dvision Salawati Mohd Yusoff said that Utusan did not obtain the car manufacturer’s approval before publishing the report.

“We also did not provide any of the figures mentioned,” said Salawati.

She however said that the reduced car prices published by Utusan Malaysia referred to the “discounts offered by Proton Edar”.

Three days ago, the Umno-owned daily reported that the government is fulfilling its promise to slash car prices by announcing that 10 car models’ price would be reduced.

Utusan reported that among the car makers involved in the price reduction were Peugeot, Volkswagen, Perodua, Honda and Proton.

However, online media The Malaysian Insider today reported that Volkswagen and Peugeot have also refuted the daily’s report.

“Please be advised, the price on the image is incorrect. The (Volkswagen) Golf price has always been RM157,888 from the time of launch. Not RM169,888 as reported,” a representative from Volkswagen Malaysia was reported saying.

Peugeot Malaysia also clarified Utusan’s report, saying its 308 Vti’s RM102,888 price is not a discounted price but has always been the price tag for the vehicle.

Honda also was reported saying that its Honda Jazz Hybrid had always been priced at RM89,900 since its launch last year.

Salawati, in her letter, advised her sales team to inform customers of the discounts via its 1Malaysia June Sales Campaign Memos.

“And you will notice, based on the discounts that we offer, the percentage is actually bigger than those quoted in the newspaper,” she said.

Carmakers refute Utusan’s price slash claim

By Zurairi AR
June 13, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Carmakers Volkswagen and Peugeot have both refuted claims of a price slash this year, as reported in Umno-backed broadsheet Utusan Malaysia three days ago as part of proof that the ruling coalition had fulfilled its election pledges.

Utusan had reported that Volkswagen, Peugeot, Honda and local marques Proton and Perodua had reduced the prices for 10 of their models by up to 11 per cent from January this year, presenting the list as proof that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government has fulfilled its pledge for lower car prices in its Election 2013 manifesto.

Miti: Cars to cost 20-30pct less by 2018

Car prices are expected to drop by 20-30 percent by 2018 with the roll-out of the National Automotive Policy 2014 which comes into effect from today up to 2020.

The NAP’s main driver for cheaper cars will be competition, with the liberalisation of manufacturing licences, according to a briefing last week by the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti).

The drop in prices is estimated on a nominal level without adjusting for inflation.

Proton Juara

aa

A sad, bad day in design history, let alone the history of Proton design – when the first Proton Juara rolled off the production line. A prototype that should never have been approved to be built, it must have happened on the day the ‘B’ squad was let loose in the decision-making process.

Proton Arena

What happened when someone let the B design team loose with a Proton Wira and a chainsaw – a massacre of taste. What can only be a distasteful joke was that the bosses named it after a corruption of the Malay term for lavatory when it was sold outside Malaysia.

It was never sent for any stringent crash tests while sold in Malaysia but the Australians tested it under their Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) where it gained a solitary star for safety as it lacked basic safety equipment like airbags and anti-lock brakes. Great to know how much the national car values Malaysian road safety!

CARS IN MALAYSIA WILL REMAIN THE 2ND MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE WORLD IF DR MAHATHIR HAS HIS WAY!

It was Dr Mahathir who created Proton and to sustain it, he forced the prices of all other cars UP, UP AND AWAY INTO THE SKY!

“The Malaysian government subsidises fuel prices. More cars on the road means more subsidies. To recover some of this money, the Government taxes motor vehicles including Proton. The high price of the cars is due to the taxes,” said Dr Mahathir. (See the Malay Mail report)

Today, he wants that to continue.

High car prices needed to sustain Proton, suggests Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has again moved to defend car prices in Malaysia, deemed as possibly the second-highest in the world, claiming that the high tax rates imposed on vehicle purchases here were necessary to recoup funds spent by the government on fuel subsidies.

The Proton adviser also appeared to suggest that the heavy tax burden helps ensure that the national carmaker would not lose market share and money, which is needed for research and development on more fuel-saving technology, such as its work on developing electric and hybrid cars.

“The Malaysian government subsidises fuel prices. More cars on the road means more subsidies. To recover some of this money, the Government taxes motor vehicles including Proton. The high price of the cars is due to the taxes,” said Dr Mahathir.

“The only way to reduce car prices is to lower or abolish taxes. The Government would lose a lot of revenue. There will be affordable electric cars when battery prices come down considerably. That will take a long time.”

CANNOT CUT CAR PRICES or Proton will have to close shop – Dr M warns

Written by Mahathir Mohamad

Malaysians are perpetually complaining about car prices being too high in Malaysia. Yet we should know that on a per head basis, there are more cars in Malaysia than all the other Asean countries.

There was a time when Government protection of Proton was high that it won 80% of market share. Today it has only 26% of the market.

If it goes down further we may have to shut down Proton.

Shutting down Proton

This will not lower the prices for foreign cars. The Government would still have to recover subsidy cost. But some 150,000 jobs generated by the national car industry will be lost.

There will be a big outflow of foreign exchange to purchase imports. We will lose much of our engineering capability which in turn would lead to more job losses as engineering-based industries cannot fund skilled workers. There will be more outflow of funds.

Stopping APs will only flood the market with foreign makes which will be the death knell of national cars. The consequence of this has already been mentioned earlier.

APs are issued not only for cars but also for sugar, flour, rice and a variety of other items. Some people have benefitted from this system over the past 80 years. They have become billionaires. There have been no demand to stop these APs. The recipients live a charmed life.

Cars in Malaysia the 2nd MOST EXPENSIVE in the world

A US blog has ranked Malaysia second in most expensive place to own a car in the world, losing only to its neighbour Singapore.

Indonesia, Nicaragua, China, Brazil, United Kingdom, St Kitts and Nevis, North Korea and Cuba were ranked behind Singapore and Malaysia according to September 5 entry posted in Jalopnik.com.

“Plus, many Malaysian spec car lacks in many safety features but still sold at a higher price. Due to high excise tax and protection policy for our local car maker Proton, many people here only can dream owning a BRZ or a Miata,” it added.

THE FORD FOCUS MAY BE THE BEST SELLING CAR IN THE WORLD BUT IN MALAYSIA, IT IS NOT.

How much will it cost?
The Sport hatch and Titanium sedan go for RM115,888, while the + versions for both retail for RM128,888, all on-the-road including insurance. It’s very competitive pricing for a comprehensively-equipped offering, topped off by the introduction of a five-year or 200,000 km warranty for it, a first for Ford in Malaysia (the Fiesta, Mondeo and S-Max registered from now also get the five-year deal). As it goes, the arrival of the Focus should stir things up in the segment very nicely.

..seven locally available passenger cars will receive safety ratings after being put through crash tests by the Institute of Road Safety and Research (Miros).

Under the first phase of the Asean New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), the brand new cars were bought from the market and crashed at Miros’ lab in Malacca.

The institute’s director-general Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon hinted that only one of the seven cars had a chance in obtaining a five-star rating – the maximum obtainable for cars with outstanding safety features.

The cars tested are the Proton Saga, Perodua Myvi, Toyota Vios, Inokom i10, Honda City, Ford Fiesta and Nissan March.

Ford Fiesta receives Asean NCAP 5-star rating (UPDATED)

Written by , Published on January 31, 2013 7:52 pm,

Ford Fiesta received the highest safety rating among the eight car models tested under the inaugural Asean NCAP (ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme) frontal collision crash test.

The results were announced today at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety and Research (Miros) PC3 crash lab in Ayer Molek, Melaka.

The eight car models tested between November until January were Nissan March, Hyundai i10, Honda City, Toyota Vios, Proton Saga FLX, Ford Fiesta, Perodua Myvi and Proton Saga FLX+.

The five-door Ford Fiesta 1.6 litre sedan obtained the highest assessment in the first independent crash test on ASEAN cars safety specifications by achieving 5-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 66 per cent score for Child Occupant Protection (COP), achieving the highest evaluation point of 15.73 from full score of 16.

The closest contender is the Honda City 1.5 litre sedan with a 5-star rating for AOP and 81 per cent COP score. The Honda model obtained the score of 15.44 out of 16 points.

Take note that the five star rating only applies to City models equipped with VSA (Honda’s marketing term for electronic stability control). In the Malaysian context, this will refer to the Grade E model. It also implies that the City Grade S, which does not have VSC, will have a four star rating, similar to the Toyota Vios.

Here we look at the five most reliable cars in Malaysia in no particular order.

The first generation Honda Accord from 1976  was popular because it offered  great fuel economy and features like cloth seats, a tachometer, intermittent wipers, and an AM/FM radio as standard equipment.

SINGAPORE HAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARS IN THE WORLD! One reason is the Certificate of Entitlement or COE.

The Certificate of Entitlement or COE is the quota license received from a successful winning bid in a open bid uniform price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use a vehicle in Singapore for a period of 10 years.

Before buying a new vehicle, potential owners in Singapore are required by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to first place a monetary bid for a Certificate of Entitlement. The number of available COEs is governed by a quota system called the Vehicle Quota System (VQS) and is announced by LTA in April of each year with a review in October for possible adjustments for the period of one year starting from May. Approximately one-twelfth of the yearly quota is auctioned off each month in a sealed-bid, uniform price auction system and successful bidders pay the lowest winning bid.

Be warned: it is very expensive to own and drive a car in Singapore. Wary of the fact that uncontrolled growth in the number of vehicles will result in traffic jams in land and road scarce Singapore, the government has implemented a range of measures to manage car ownership and usage. These include the Certificate of Entitlement (COE), Vehicle Quota System (VQS), road taxes and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP). All motor vehicles must be registered with the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

So what does all this mean for your dream car? Some estimates (including annual registration fee, import duty, road tax, registration fee and number plates) are: Audi A41.8 (A) $182,000 (including COE), BMW 328 (A) (2.8cc) $238,000 (including COE); Mercedes 200E $201,902; Volvo 940 Turbo Estate 2.0 (A) $160,753. M’sia’s No. 2 ranking in ‘most expensive places to buy cars’ list sparks concern

K Koris Atan, vice president of Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca), said while it was understandable for Singapore to raise car prices, there was no sense for Malaysia to do so if it was meant for public benefit.

He said in Singapore, where high prices are mostly caused by the expensive bidding for the Certificate of Entitlement to own a vehicle, the government is trying to encourage people to use public transport.

This is justified as the perimeter of the island is very small and limited in relation to its growing population.

“But in Malaysia the high taxes on cars are not because the government wants to discourage car ownership, as much as because it want to make money from the taxes,” said Koris, who is also president of Penang Consumer Protection Association.

He stressed that the high taxes on foreign cars serves to keep prices of local government-linked brands that are protected, like Proton, relatively low.

He criticised the move to impose taxes on competitors, saying Malaysia is the only country that that makes its own cars and depends on the local market, and not exports, to make most of its profits.

Malaysia is ranked as the second most expensive place to buy a car in the world, right behind Singapore, in an article, The 10 Most Expensive Places To Buy A Car, on the popular car news portal, Jalopnik, recently.

The article, published last month, struck a chord among many Malaysians as car prices have long been an issue of discontent among ordinary folk who have been struggling to make ends meet.

Now, coupled with the fuel price hike, the issue has once again come under the spotlight.

A quick survey of top car manufacturers’ websites reveal that Malaysians pay up to twice what American consumers pay for a similar car in America.

REALLY? Cars in Malaysia CHEAPER than in other countries

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) has rubbished a report by popular car news portal, Jalopnik, that ranked Malaysia as the second most expensive place in the world to buy a car.

MAI CEO, Mohamad Madani Sahari said the report was unfair as it was based on only one car model, the Scion Fr-S.

“It is not fair to make a comparison solely based on a single model, and this model is a high-end sports car not meant for the masses,” he told Astro AWANI.

He defended the prices of locally-made cars, saying that some local cars were among the cheapest in Asia.

“MAI has conducted an overall car price comparison in Asia. Car prices in Singapore and Vietnam are generally higher than in Malaysia.

“Models like Proton Saga SV is sold at RM33,438 in Malaysia while the same model is sold at RM40,581 in Thailand, RM40,246 in Indonesia and RM81,823 in Singapore.

“Malaysia has the cheapest car price among other countries that are selling the Perodua Viva 660 BX.

“Even for luxurious cars such as Volkswagen Golf, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and BMW 740Li, the models are priced higher especially in Thailand and Vietnam compared to Malaysia,” he said.
