SINGAPORE – Too busy to join the ridiculously long queues for bak kwa this Chinese New Year? Get your workers – if you have them – to do it for you then.
That is apparently what some employers in Singapore are doing to avoid queuing up themselves. This week, a photo of foreign workers staking out overnight at a well-known bak kwa store was circulated on social media, highlighting the practice once again.
The photo posted by Facebook user Anson Leong at 2.42am on Monday morning showed seven Indian workers sleeping on the floor outside Lim Chee Guan’s flagship store at New Bridge Road. The original post was shared over 360 times as of Tuesday evening.
Chinese paper Shin Min Daily spotted three foreign workers among the hundreds of people in the queue on Tuesday morning. One of them told the paper that his employer had instructed him to buy 20kg worth of the barbecued meat.
Lim Chee Guan is selling its bak kwa at $52 per kg this festive season.

It seems to have been a case (or two cases?) of “How dare you cheat me by matching me up with those kinds of guys?” Then, WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! went the hammer.
Woman confronts dating agency owner with 34cm-long hammer, smashes items in shop http://shar.es/1bwvnY
SINGAPORE – A dissatisfied customer of a dating agency at Park Lane Shopping Centre went to confront the owner with a 34cm-long hammer and smashed up items in the shop.
According to a report on Shin Min Daily, Ms Zhang Xiuchun, 39, joined the dating agency in Feb 2012 and was matched up with two men during the next 12 months.
In Mar 2013, the permanent resident felt that she was cheated by the agency and wanted to get a full refund on the membership fee.
However, the agency was unable to give her a full refund as she had used their services by meeting up with two men, and proposed to give her a partial refund and terminate her membership.
Dissatisfied with the proposal, Ms Zhang went to the agency two months later to settle the issue.
..
Ms Zhang reportedly smashed several objects and furniture including a pair of custom-made tables worth $800, a telephone which cost $50 and credit card transaction machines.

Singapore has barred self-proclaimed “pick-up artist” Julien Blanc from entering the country.
Here are some other bans the Republic has imposed:
1. Electronic cigarettes
Under the Tobacco Act, the import, distribution, sale or offer for sale of anything that resembles a tobacco product is prohibited. Buying e-cigarettes from overseas websites or bringing them into the country in hand luggage is also considered importing, which is illegal.
2. Extramarital dating site Ashley Madison
The Media Development Authority banned the site last November, saying it constituted an attack on “our family values and public morality”.
3. Playboy magazine
The magazines which feature nude picture spreads has been banned here since 1982 for allegedly promoting promiscuous values among women.
4. Chewing gum
In 1992, Singapore’s leaders banned the sale of chewing gum here…The Government partially lifted the ban in 2004 to allow the sale of chewing gum used for health reasons, such as nicotine gum to help those trying to quit smoking.

Singapore Medical Council overcharged Susan Lim: Courts – The Online Citizen http://ift.tt/1rCV9om #sgbreakingnews

High Court ruled that the legal bills sought by the Singapore Medical Council from Dr Susan Lim, in relation to an earlier court case, were overcharged.
Ironically, the case that was awarded in favour of SMC two years ago against Dr Lim was the result of a probe into whether Dr Lim has overcharged her client.
Dr Lim was earlier investigated for overcharging her client, a member of the Brunei royal family, for services which totalled about $24 million. She was found guilty of professional misconduct in 2012 and was suspended for three years, censured and fined $10,000 by the SMC.
SMC then proceeded to file claims against her, to the sum of $1.33 million. However, the High Court ruled on Wednesday, 1 October that the legal bills sought by SMC were themselves inflated, and reduced them to $317,000.
SMC is believed to be seeking an appeal against the High Court judgement.
..
The following is a sample of the overcharged items.
| Item | SMC claimed it cost… | High Court ruled it should cost… |
| Total legal fees | $1.33 million | $317,000 |
| Legal cost for trial | $900,000 | $180,000 |
| Legal cost for appeal hearing | $150,000 | $70,000 |
| Legal assessment for the case | $235,000 | $22,000 |
| Expert witnesses | $52,000 | $14,000 |

KOI Cafe fires employee for insulting customer over the weekend http://goo.gl/6YD4RT
SINGAPORE – KOI Cafe has fired the employee who allegedly insulted and hurled expletives at one of its customers over the weekend.
The customer, Ms Gia Munaji Salamat, told The Straits Times in a phone interview on Monday evening that she had just met with two of the beverage chain’s managers, who handed her a bouquet of flowers and a handwritten letter of apology from the employee, Rachel. They also told her that Rachel, a foreign student, had been terminated from her position because of the incide
Ms Gia Munaji, 33, posted a Facebook video on Saturday complaining about her encounter at Boon Lay MRT’s KOI Express outlet on the same day. When she tried to clarify why the stall had closed early, Rachel allegedly used an expletive and said “go away you ugly b***h”.
…
In the apology letter dated Oct 27, Rachel wrote: “I am terribly sorry about my actions and words towards you that day. I am deeply regretful for causing you stress and indignity over my unfair behaviour towards you.”
She added: “I just hope you understand that I was under immense stress not just at work but at other matters as well, therefore I was unable to control my emotions.”
While Ms Gia Munaji said that the matter was handled “efficiently” by the cafe’s management, she stressed that she is uncomfortable with the employee losing her job.
“I feel really bad. She’s just making ends meet,” she said. “I had no ill intention by putting up the video. I just wanted to create awareness and address the bad service.”

Bus stop with ‘obstacle course’ at Ulu Pandan Rd confuses commuters http://shar.es/1mashc
SINGAPORE – Is this a bus stop or an obstacle course?
This was how Mr Allan Zheng, 52, reacted when he went to a “temporary” bus stop at Ulu Pandan Road on Monday.
It has all the trimmings of a bus stop – a shelter, seats and even a bus sign.
But a metal guardrail and a row of shrubs blocked access to the road from the bus stop.
So a commuter would have to negotiate past the waist-high shrubs and climb over the knee-high barrier to board a bus. This was what Mr Zheng had to do to board a bus at the bus stop.
…
NOT FOR USE YET
Last night, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) clarified in a statement that this bus stop and another other across the road were not meant to be used yet.
Mr Shafiee Mohd Esa, Senior Principal Engineer, PUB’s Catchment and Waterways Department, said: “As part of the Bukit Timah First Diversion Canal Phase 1 to enhance flood protection for the Upper Bukit Timah catchment, two bus stops at Ulu Pandan Road are temporarily closed.
“After consultation with residents of Pine Grove, they have agreed to use the existing bus stops nearby while the two replacement bus stops are being constructed.
“They are not yet operational and have been barricaded until they become fully functional in a week’s time.”

This is an unpleasant surprise! Touts in Singapore? At Newton Food Centre! We did away with this long ago at our food courts and centers.
Are touts at Newton Food Centre a problem for you? http://fb.me/7l9EZOjq7
I am a regular patron of Newton Food Centre and am aware that the National Environment Agency (NEA) has imposed certain restrictions on hawkers, so as to reduce touting.
Yet, when I visited the food centre last Saturday, I noticed touts approaching customers at the entrance.
They even went so far as to look for seats for the customers, placing their menus on the table to make the diners feel obliged to patronise their stalls.
To ensure an adequate supply of seats for their customers, these touts would occupy the outdoor tables and prevent customers who refuse their “help” from taking them.
The NEA has stipulated that hawkers have to wear a name tag stating their stall number, for easy identification of touts – but none of the hawkers I saw wore them.
I hope the NEA will look into these issues as soon as possible, and conduct more stringent checks on the hawkers.

Soon Thiam Hi, would like to understand the terms of illegal cycling because there a lot of people do not know about it and by give fine is not fair to them.Public education is needed to inform us of such rules.
-
Philip Wong Fail! How can cycling at that spot be illegal when there appears to be a bicycle parking lot in the background of one of the photos. Bikes are expected to fly there?
-
Shengen Lim yeah, this looks like another case of double standard going on.
-
Lewis Loh I noted that the police officer in the picture was attired in standard police cycling patrol wear. Was the police office also cycling to nab these “errant cyclists”? Or is this simply a posed picture.

-
Waw Setia Ikan East Coast Town Council believe that their area have a lot of rich people, thus cycling is not allowed.
-
Brandon Lim Walau fail sia so it is illegal to cycle?
What talking u -
Shawn Lim East Coast Town Council Can you please include the rules and regulations for cycling in public areas? Cause other than areas with no cycling signs (Which are really small at areas around the town center btw) we have no idea of what is right and wrong. Riding a bike is not like driving where we had to go through Basic and Final Theory exams. Also it would be great to post those guidelines as public announcements at the HDB void decks or flyers to individual houses.
RESIDENTS OUTRAGED AFTER CYCLISTS FINED FOR RIDING ON PAVEMENT IN BEDOK TOWN CENTRE
The East Coast Town Council Facebook page recently posted a few photos of cyclists getting summoned at the Town centre in Bedok and accompanied the post with the caption “Cyclist caught and summoned this morning for illegal cycling at the Town Centre.”
The post quickly gathered hundreds of comments, with most residents expressing surprise as many were unaware of the rules.
There were dozens of comments expressing confusion about the rules and many netizens even pointed out that the photos depicted bike parking spaces in the backgrounds just behind where cyclists were being summoned.
Residents raised several concerns including the fact that those in the photos appeared to be regular residents on their errands to the markets and did not appear to be the type who would cycle very fast.
Others commented how the path looked clear and uncrowded at that time and the police should give leniency.
Some residents also commented that the authorities were being greedy by collecting fines instead of doing simple public education exercises..
…
Overall, it is clear that many residents feel that these rules should not be enforced very strictly given that there s little signage, the pavements are wide and there are even bike parking spaces within the town centre.
Do you think the authorities were too harsh to straight away be issuing fines to cyclists who probably didn’t know it was an offence?

When netizens emailed SMRT about the incident, SMRT explained that they do not condone such acts and if offenders are caught doing such things to soil the premises, staff members will put a stop to it right away and the offender would most likely be issued a Notice Of Offence and summoned by the NEA.
However, in this case, SMRT explained that they could not fine the woman as she has done this out of the line of sight of their station staff and as she had already left the scene by the time they were made aware of it.
They were only able to send cleaners to clean up the mess right away.
They also explained that it is simply not possible for the staff to constantly watch the CCTV feeds as they have other duties and passengers to attend to.

SINGAPORE – A part of an escalator leading up to a children’s education centre in Forum The Shopping Mall gave way earlier today (August 3) but no one was hurt. Security guards at the Orchard Road mall said staff the Julia Gabriel Centre, a tenant on the 4th level, alerted them to the faulty elevator around 1.10 pm and the escalator has been cordoned off.
A check by Channel NewsAsia showed one of the elevator steps had “moved”, leaving a gap large enough for a person’s foot to be trapped in. The escalator has been closed to public, but they can still access the Julia Gabriel Centre via the adjacent escalator that has been turned off.
The centre caters to children between six months and 12 years old, according to its website. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

Singapore ad backfires thanks to Germany Cup run
— Jul. 14, 2014 5:10 AM EDT
SINGAPORE (AP) — An ad campaign warning of the perils of gambling that began as just another bland public service announcement by Singapore’s government has turned into fodder for international mockery, and left authorities scrambling after Germany’s World Cup victory.
In the TV version of the ad, which debuted last month when the World Cup kicked off, a sullen young boy named Andy tells his friends in the playground that his father had used all of Andy’s savings to bet on Germany to win the tournament.
Sad piano music is cued and a message is displayed: “Often, the people who suffer from problem gambling aren’t the gamblers.”
The PSA wasn’t lampooned until Germany won its first match against Portugal, 4-0. As the World Cup progressed and the Germans looked more and more like favorites to win the title, the mocking of the ad intensified, with many wondering if little Andy and his dad were going to make a killing on the bet.
After Germany’s stunning 7-1 semifinal drubbing of Brazil, the ad prompted ridiculing on “The Tonight Show.”
“Cheer up, kid, your dad bet on Germany,” host Jimmy Fallon said. “He’s so rich you don’t even need to go to college anymore.”
Even Singapore’s usually stoic politicians could not resist taking a few pot shots. Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin wrote on Facebook: “Looks like the boy’s father who bet all his savings on Germany will be laughing all the way to the bank!”
…
On Monday, following Germany’s 1-0 win over Argentina in the final, Facebook pages were full of congratulatory messages for Andy and his dad. A few suggested the two were off to Germany for a holiday, while another showed Andy wearing a suit, accompanied by the caption, “Who’s your daddy?”
The council, meanwhile, rushed to post a new ad on its website. It features Andy’s friend asking him: “Your dad’s team won. Did you get your savings back?”
Andy replies: “No, Dad never stops … he wants to bet one more time.”

Dear TRS,
Old Chang Kee sold me a Curry O with a giant maggot inside it!
How could such an established brand allow such a shocking and disgusting thing to happen?

In fact, this is not the first time that Old Chang Kee food has had insects in them!
This picture from Yahoo shows that another person last year had a similar experience with a smaller bug.

At that time, Old Chang Kee just said that they “already apologised” as if that was all that they could do.
What exactly have they done to ensure the quality of their food products?!
I am seriously very disgusted with Old Chang Kee now.

THE TALE OF THE LECHEROUS DOCTOR, UNFAITHFUL WIFE AND UNFORGIVING HUSBAND.
A man hired a private investigator to follow his wife and a doctor. Photos were taken of the two at bars. Text messages in her smartphone had pantyhose, skirt, rope and tie.
The wife admitted they had read pornographic novels together but insisted they never had sex.
The doctor offered her husband S$200,000 (RM513,000) to cover up the matter and also went down on his knees to apologise.
No, the husband went ahead and divorced his wife. He said that he could not accept her being unfaithful to him.

Touching video shows people in Singapore helping a tissue seller
By Nurul Azliah Aripin | What’s buzzing?
Do Singaporeans have a heart?
We live in such a fast-paced city that it is easy to overlook the people around us who are seeking help.
Like the tissue sellers.
While some would simply walk pass them without acknowledgment, there are those who would stop to offer help as shown in a video by ClickNetworkTV, which has gotten over 20,000 views.
In the social experiment, Singapore singer-songwriter Don Richmond approached passers-by to do a survey for $5. A wheelchair-bound tissue seller would then approach the respondent, hoping that he or she would buy a packet of tissue.
While some refused or avoided the elderly seller, the 3-minute video posted on Wednesday showed that there were many who would stop and buy too.

The bribe-taking, sex-hungry Singapore policemen

From The Bangkok Post
Aged only 31, he lures poor Thai women to Singapore with the promise of wealth by selling their bodies. He is the head pimp, or mangda in Thai, of the infamous jungle prostitutes of Woodlands, an outer suburb of the city-state where a large number of imported foreign labourers work mostly in factories.
For more than five years, he has “filled a need”, as he puts it, by providing poorly paid Indian, Bengali, Thai, Malaysian and Chinese men with sex that they can afford.
…
Not only does Candy take full advantage of the Thai women, but certain personnel in the Singapore Police do as well.
Candy’s special customers: the bribe-taking, sex-hungry policemen
All of the Thai women interviewed claim that Candy pays a monthly bribe to the police. The policeman he pays is a former head of the Woodlands branch who is now working elsewhere.
Some of the girls believe that Candy’s best friend, Ah Pooee, contributes half of the bribe and Candy often refers to the S$4,000 (92,000 baht) a month they pay the police.
In return Candy is forewarned of any raids which are going to take place.

The expat driver flips the biker off-balance and does a foot sweep, landing him squarely on his back.
He then pins the motorcyclist down while the latter struggles, as passers-by persuade them to stop fighting.
The expat driver said:
“Are you going to tell him to stop? Can you tell him to stop?
“If I stand up and he hits me, I’ll hit him back, do you understand?”
An angered passer-by can be heard shouting, “Enough enough! Both of you stop!”

Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan mocked the attire of a man whose photo she uploaded on her facebook page — a post which the man’s daughter has responded to.
Jesslyn Tan, 25, is a university graduate and one of the finalists in the Miss Universe Singapore beauty pageant last year.
She had posted a photo showing a man wearing a t-shirt with holes on her facebook page, and wrote: “Holey moley. Sibei trendy worzxxz.”
…
She (the man’s daughter) responded: “He’s my dad. Not everyone is as lucky as you making money based on looks. We don’t have money to buy fancy clothes all the time. So what if there is a hole in the shirt. It’s nothing [to be] shameful about.
“Rather, your act of laughing at others having a hole in the shirt is shameful. What if your dad is being made fun of? Think about it, Jesslyn Tan and the rest of you.”

…
The Independent Singapore
Jesslyn Tan: Poor anger management?

“Being able to be Miss Universe does not make you a better person than others. Being rich is not always about money… it’s also about being well-mannered and mindful of others. Beauty not only on your face but most importantly in your heart! Go back and see where you come from (sic.),” said one Haza Ishak.
On Tan’s own Facebook page, the daughter of the elderly man in the photograph came to her father’s defence.
“He’s my dad. Not everyone is as lucky as you, making money off looks. We do not have the money to buy fancy clothes. But so what if there is a hole in my father’s shirt? There is nothing to be ashamed about!” said a red-face Cindy Tan.
Jesslyn Tan will be the unfortunate Anton Casey replica, just so we can have our anger issues sorted out.
Singaporeans’ anger towards Jesslyn Tan reveals a deeper issue within the social landscape of this society. We are at our height of resentment against those who have too much while many of us struggle to make ends meet.

Demon-cratic :
Coming Full Circle
—
MY HUSBAND has been seeing a general practitioner (GP) at Tampines Polyclinic for several years.
In early August, the GP decided my husband needed to see a renal specialist as a blood test showed that his condition was worsening.
We were shocked, however, to find out that the appointment date given by the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) was December next year.
After I called several times to plead and complain, it was moved up to August next year. Why does my husband have to wait nearly a year for his appointment?
Who is responsible if something happens to him in the meantime? Are our hospital staff so overworked that appointments have to be scheduled over a year in advance?
The SGH feedback department claimed that the reason for such a late date was that the GP did not request an urgent appointment.
Isn’t it urgent enough if the GP decides that my husband needs to see a specialist and do a scan of his kidneys?
Surely polyclinics do not send patients to specialists for no good reason. This would be a first-time investigative check, and patients would worry over whether or not there is anything wrong with them.
Just because patients like my husband do not complain does not mean they are okay. The health authorities should appreciate such patients and not penalise them by putting them at the back of the queue.

行动党说要让人民“过着更美好的生活”
People’s Action Party argued that we should ” live a better life .”

Dear The Real Singapore,
Below is my submission 🙂

Joe Tan

People’s Action Party argued that we should ” live a better life .”

the real singapore
Dear The Real Singapore,
Below is my submission 🙂
Action Party said that to let people live a ” better life “, which promises to reach said “Swiss -like living standards.”
Even our oath , but also said ” building a just and equitable and democratic society .”
Our oath says , ” vows , regardless of race ,” but the actual situation is that to this day, our Malay , is still not in the armed forces , some of the “sensitive” post office. Action Party gave the reason is that it may give the country to bring ” harm .”
However, the Action Party can bring a lot of foreign talent , give them new citizens , is also equal to the right to vote .
These new citizens , actually be able to deploy , we can not serve Malay armed forces department .
If you include new citizens, permanent residents , about half of Singapore ‘s population are foreigners , foreigners and even said, ” Without them, Singapore will collapse ! .”
Excuse me, this is the ” living a better life ” do ?
Action Party , said national service is glory , so do not ask for a high salary , but the PAP ministers , but led the world’s highest salaries, ministers , parliamentarians , civil servants, not also in the performance of a ” national service ” do ?
They are servants of the people , but the salaries of ministers can be several million , while the salaries of servicemen , hundreds of pieces , and that nothing is dead also .
This is the ” living a better life ” do ?
Singaporeans are hardworking , worked hard for decades to 55 years old, has been working for almost 35 years. But we fund , but do not be put forward , but also continue to raise the minimum deposit each year , as well as the minimum age limit . Please do not forget the hard-earned money is a Singaporean fund , not the government’s money !
Excuse me, this is the ” living a better life ” do ?
Singaporeans devoted themselves to raise children , their suffering does not matter, but when students are exposed to a very great pressure, no childhood. When a university degree , full of ” foreign talent ” they forced to bear the expensive tuition to send their children abroad to study , and some people even need to sell HDB to also children studying abroad costs .
Children grow up , but also with a large number of foreign ” talent” competition , these people of the ” timber ” Where ? Lies in their low salaries , the introduction of a large number of Singapore, capable of producing high GDP phenomenon.
When the younger generation , it is tough to pay, repeating the mistakes of their parents , when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong actually said , do not want to have work and family balance (work life balance), otherwise , Vietnamese, Chinese , Indian, will eat your lunch ! Other words Fujian words, ” do die .”
Excuse me, this is the ” living a better life ” do ?
Singaporeans toil for a lifetime , to the old age , it was found very expensive medical bills , but Singaporeans but hard working, their request to Polyclinic doctors wrote recommend to large hospitals , because it is cheaper, but there are a lot of people need to wait months or even wait a year to see the doctor , do not say that money gives more patients , more important ?
This is the ” living a better life ” do ?
DAP one -party dominance , hoodwink , persecution many upright leader of the opposition , from Lim Chin Siong , Xie CPIC , Dr Lim Hock Siew , to JBJ, Dr. Xu Shunquan , Tang Liang Hong and so on. Action Party to revise history , claimed there were Communists , cheated several times young people. Action Party means the use of a very , dare to question the spirit of the people , social speech rights , the pressure to a minimum. People in such circumstances, living five years. Action Party had been able to wonder why Singapore can not be more spot talent.
Singaporeans need general election in 2016 , awake , for the sake of the future of our children and grandchildren , the more opposition into parliament , otherwise, 2021 in Singapore , may have been unsightly it.
Regards,
Joe Tan

Couples make out in public at East Coast Park
SINGAPORE – They pitch their tents on weekends in broad daylight at East Coast Park.
Welcome to Singapore’s latest hangout for hanky panky, or in the words of one netizen, Singapore’s new “sexual camping ground”.
Of late, the grassy areas at the popular park have become a hit with couples, especially, it seems, foreign couples. They spend their day in tents pitched in the park.
This has been going on for a year now, according to some netizens, who have dubbed these tents “love nests”.
The New Paper went to areas C and D of East Coast Park on Sunday afternoon and saw at least 50 tents dotting the grass patches.
While about a dozen of them were occupied by locals, the rest seemed to be occupied by foreigners.
…
One couple – reportedly foreigners – were even caught having sex inside a half-zipped tent, something criminal lawyers said could get them prosecuted.
But not everyone at East Coast Park was there for hanky-panky.
A group of Filipino women were huddled over some tidbits and soft drinks outside a tent at the park on Sunday afternoon.
They were having a farewell gathering for a friend who was returning to the Philippines.

A jobless Taiwan hawker earning less than $800 SGD in Taiwan got Singapore PR within half a year. He said that the Singapore government did not care about his education level or job experience. He even managed to bring his 4 kids and wife over to live with him in Singapore.
We are not trying to discriminate Taiwanese, they are generally friendly, but how are people like him creating more jobs for Singaporean
