BIG BATTLES LOOM
Three days before nominations, key fights are shaping up in Selangor, Kedah and Johor wherethe heavyweight bout between Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang is certain to hold centre stage…..
PETALING JAYA: With three days to nominations, ferocious battles are looming in the frontline states of Johor, Selangor and Kedah as Barisan Nasional seeks to strengthen its hold on its “fixed deposit” state and reclaim what it lost in 2008.
As widely predicted, Gelang Patah in Johor will take centre stage, featuring the heavy weight bout between Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang.
With Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed to remain at his parliamentary seat, Pasir Gudang MP Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin has become the sole contender for Mentri Besar following his move to the Permas state seat.
Other major fights in Johor include the contests between MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and state PKR chief Datuk Chua Jui Meng and PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub and Jazlan in Pulai.
Lembah Pantai will be a close contest between MP Nurul Izzah Anwar of PKR and Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.
DAP’s Teo Nie Ching will move from Serdang to Kulai parliamentary seat, putting an end to speculations that Tony Pua will be fielded there.

BN faces formidable opposition
BN now faces the fight of its life against Pakatan Rakyat led by Anwar Ibrahim.
by M. Jegathesan
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia today announced a general election for May 5, setting a long-awaited date for polls tipped to be its closest ever as the long-ruling government seeks to hold off a surging opposition.
Speaking a week after Prime Minister Najib Razak dissolved Parliament, Election Commission chairman Aziz Yusof said the two-week official campaign period would kick off on April 20.
……….
The Umno-controlled Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition had romped to victory in every election before 2008, when it lost its powerful two-thirds majority.
It now faces the fight of its life against the Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Pact) opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim.
Viable alternative
The charismatic Anwar was handpicked by authoritarian ex-leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad as heir to Umno but was ousted from government in 1998 and jailed in a power struggle between the two men that left Malaysian politics deeply polarised.
“For Pakatan Rakyat it is the best possible chance to offer a viable alternative for democracy and a more responsible government. I think the chances of winning are very good,” Anwar told AFP.

While the campaign period of 15 days for the upcoming general election is the longest since 1982, Penang caretaker Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said this has fallen short of demands.
“We regret it is only 15 days. We had hoped that it would be 21 days, according to (coalition for clean and fair election) Bersih demands,” he told a press conference today.
“We feel that the media, controlled by BN, has not given enough fair coverage to the (federal) opposition or to the (Penang) state government. That is why we feel we need more time (to campaign).
“Although the Election Commission (EC) has added two days to the 2008 (campaign period), it is not adequate.”
The EC announced today that it has fixed April 20 for nominations and May 5 for the 13th general election.
Lim, who is DAP secretary-general, expressed hope that the EC will ensure the independence of the media and other government agencies over the campaign period.
