Picket Daulat 6413 turns musical
The protest organised by the National Union of Banks Employees becomes a musical event, showcasing bhangra, drummers and ‘Oppa Gangnam style’ performances.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union Banking Employees (NUBE) “Picket Daulat 6413″ protest today, attended by some 10,000 banking sector employees, turned out to be a colourful event with musical performances.
NUBE members from various states converged at Dataran Maybank here this afternoon, arriving in bus loads to show their displeasure against their employers.
The event kicked off with four members from Ipoh NUBE branch performing musical items using bhangra drums. The upbeat performance led to some members dancing to the Punjabi beat.
Their performance lasted for about 45 minutes before the protest officially took off at 2pm.
In addition, several other NUBE picketing members played the drums. Others showed their support by blowing vuvuzelas.
Some also danced to the beat of world famous Korean song “Oppa Gangnam Style” which was originally performed by Psy.
Police cordoned had off Menara Maybank opposite the Mydin shopping complex as early as 12.30 noon with red and white striped tapes.
……….
NUBE is also unhappy over the bankss action in laying off senior workers and creating unemployment. The banks are also accused of promoting income inequality.
NUBE is also picketing against CIMB as it sees CIMB’s actions of removing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s picture in the banks as an insult to the monarchy.
The picket ended at 4.20pm.

Bank employees to go ahead with national picket
MCBA has no legal standing to demand the picket be called off, says NUBE.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) will go ahead with its picket today despite a plea from the Malaysian Commercial Banks Association (MCBA) to call it off.
More than 20,000 NUBE members from all over the country are expected to join the picket scheduled to start at 2pm.
The picket will be held along the Maybank and CIMB outlets on Jalan Tun Perak here.
“MCBA has no legal standing to demand that the union call off the picket. In fact, this call is illegal; it runs foul of Section 4 of the Industrial Relations Act 1967 that safeguards employees from intimidation by employers from participation in trade union activities.
“The law states that employers shall not interfere with the work of the union in activities related to the welfare of union members,” NUBE general-secretary J Solomon (photo) said in a statement.
He said that it is the MCBA which is conducting itself illegally.
“This includes the continued incursions into the well-being of our members by their respective employers,” he said.
Solomon also countered MCBA’s allegation that NUBE has not followed proper procedures to communicate with the banks to address the issues raised.
“Numerous correspondences are ignored. At times when NUBE officials have meetings with bank management, we see that they are not serious, and neither are they interested in a fair dialogue. These discussions always ended in a stalemate.
“This has led to legal action in courts. This process is not only lengthy and costly to the union, but it is benefiting the banks since they have the financial clout to bear such expenses,” he said.
