Bersih’s Ambiga appears at Nurul Izzah event

mbiga made an appearance at Nurul Izzah’s campaign trail last night, where Nurul Izzah addressed some 400 people who had crammed into a narrow alley in Bangsar to listen to her.

NONEThey two are also scheduled to help promote Bersih’s Pemantau volunteer election monitoring campaign at Bangsar’s Lucky Garden morning market today.

However, Ambiga, who also spoke last night, maintained that she is non-partisan and she would be willing to speak on BN’s platform as well – except for one problem: “This is, I only get invited by Pakatan Rakyat,” she said, drawing laughter from the audience.

“If BN or Umno invites me, I will definitely go to speak, but I will say the same thing as I’m saying here,” Ambiga added, before moving on to speak on her concerns about deaths in custody, corruption, and electoral fraud.

‘Please come out and vote’

The Bersih co-chairperson also reiterated her plea to the people to come out and vote in large numbers in order to minimise the impact of any electoral fraud.

“Every single vote is going to count in this general election,” Ambiga said, without referring to any specific constituency.

“That is what Bersih has been saying, that is what we have been fighting for. We have been fighting for a free and fair election; and this is not going to be a free and fair election. Sorry.

“But we don’t give up. Can we give up? No. We must soldier on and we must fight the fraud,” she told the audience.

To keep Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah battles political patronage, dubious voters

By Emily Din
April 14, 2013

a

NuKUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Political patronage, dubious voters and direct cash handouts are making it hard for Nurul Izzah Anwar to keep Lembah Pantai from going to Umno’s Senator Raja Datuk Nong ChikNurul Zainal in the May 5 polls, the PKR vice-president said.

She and her Pakatan Rakyat (PR) colleagues spoke at two ceramahs last night in the poorer sections of the federal seat, telling voters to keep her in the seat she first won in an equally tough uphill battle in Election 2008.

“He’s not only minister, he’s minister of Wilayah Persekutuan. He controls DBKL’s largesse. And he controls all the projects. Everything is approved by him, name it. Nothing happens, nothing’s approved without him,” Nurul Izzah told The Malaysian Insider after the two ceramahs.

Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak named Nong Chik a senator to make him Federal Territories and Urban Well-being minister in 2009, putting him in charge of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
……….

Nurul Izzah also pointed out her worries about the 5,000 voters in Lembah Pantai considered dubious by her coalition.

“It’s not an issue of new voters but transferred voters, about 5,000 of them. They are the killer because it’s a bit insidious how they were transferred in the first place. And we’ve checked the housing areas and they don’t live there,” said the eldest child of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Earlier this month, she failed to get the High Court to consent to a judicial review against the Election Commission (EC) to compel it to clean up the electoral roll for her constituency.

Nurul: Vote for much needed reforms

Priscilla Prasena | April 13, 2013

The PKR vice president says much needed political reforms in the country can only come if Pakatan is elected to form the new federal government

LEMBAH PANTAI: Malaysians have the best opportunity in the upcoming general election to vote in a new federal government and ensure the much needed political reforms are carried out in the country.

“If we (the opposition) fail to come to power, then Malaysians will lose the opportunity to initiate reforms.

“It will be a lost opportunity for the people. This will happen if Pakatan fails to take over the federal administration,” PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar told FMT in an interview.

She said Pakatan Rakyat, the opposition pact made up of PKR, DAP and PAS, was serious in tackling cronyism and nepotism currently prevalent under the BN rule.

She also condemned personalities like Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali and former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad for fanning racial politics and escalating tensions in the country.

“The fabric of the nation will be torn apart day by day by their racist remarks. This will leave a mark on the society when one advocates or supports the racist group.

“The government of the day should not support any agenda. You are suppose to be the guardian of this nation,” she added.

Nurul Izzah binti Anwar is a Malaysian politician from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and is the current Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai.

She is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, a former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and the current de facto opposition leader and of the PKR.

Her mother, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is the President of PKR.

In the 2008 general election, Nurul Izzah contested the seat of Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur, which was contested by three candidates. The seat was defended by three-term incumbent Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who was Minister for Women, Family and Community Development in the Barisan Nasional government. Initial reports suggested that Shahrizat would retain the seat, as she had been a popular Minister, and in the 2004 election retained her seat with a majority of 15,288.

However, on polling day, Nurul Izzah won 21,728 votes to Shahrizat’s 18,833, and was elected as the new MP for Lembah Pantai.

In November 2010, Nurul Izzah was elected one of the Vice Presidents of Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Raja Nong Chik grabbed the golden opportunity to gain name and favour by providing funds for the remaining 18 blocks to upgrade their pipe systems. This was only announced last Saturday (April 7, 2013).  Why could he have not done this earlier?

Highlights of Taman Bukit Angkasa’s problems have been brought to the attention of the former Lembah Pantai MP Shahrizat Abdul Jalil since 2004. Did she actually serve the people? The evidence is so alive that she did not serve the welfare of Taman Bukit Angkasa’s residents.

A blatant lie about Nurul Izzah

April 10, 2013

FMT LETTER: From Rebecca Jane Thomas, via e-mail

I was reading the April 8 Malay Mail article, ‘Lembah Pantai back to BN?’ by Nadya Ngui and my blood rose. I was so furious with the following opening paragraph:

“The Barisan Nasional’s (BN) chances of recapturing the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat look promising as voters in the constituency say Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) representative Nurul Izzah Anwar was a “no show” after 2008.”

I am here to say that this is a blatant lie. I have personally witnessed the dedication, the sensitiveness towards the people’s concern, the humility and hard work of this MP in my area, Taman Bukit Angkasa especially Block 14 in Lembah Pantai.

When I approached the MIC and Umno leaders in 2010 to do something about the burst pipes in our block, I was told that since this place is now under MP Nurul Izzah, I should go to her and that they cannot do anything to help me.

I remember very clearly the MIC and Umno leaders mentioned that the government has no money to help replace the pipes which was causing a nightmare and a burden to its residents.  They just did not bother about our problems and wanted us to continue suffering.

But I kept on with my fight.  Even the PR Officer of Syabas at that point of time questioned our support for BN if they were to come in and help us.

So I took MIC’s and Umno’s advice and communicated with Nurul and she came to hear us out.  She said she will raise our issue in Parliament and this was confirmed by her former assistant. This former assistant is now serving Raja Nong Chik.
I found out the following touching characteristics in Nurul throughout 2010 and 2013:

  • Punctuality: Despite heavy rains, she never missed her appointment time with the residents.
  • Humility: She always respected the elderly with praying hands and with a bow.  She spoke very  politely and even when the odds were against her, she kept her calm spirit under control.  She will never let an elderly and sick person come to her.  She goes directly to their door step and if she has to climb the steps, which is what she exactly did in terms of giving away household provisions.
  • No campaigning: She never campaigned during her visits and asked any one of us to vote for her each time she met up with us
  • Quantity was not her concern: Even though there were a few of us, she took time of her busy schedule and came to meet up with us and hear our concerns.

When the Umno leaders saw that Nurul was making inroads, they sprung into action.  They decided to take matters into their hands including Raja Nong Chik. They felt threatened by her presence.

If I did not go to Nurul Izzah, all our pipe woes would not have been solved. I had to find my own sponsors to pay the 20% deposit for the funds under the TP1M scheme and Block 14 was the first block in Taman Bukit Angkasa which had its pipes upgraded in 2011.

Tan Poh Lai, the deputy Women’s chief of PKR Johor, “This is a test case for Najib Razak. Is he doing all he can as the Women’s Minister? So far, we have not even heard a word from him. Malaysian women must expect more than what they are getting now in terms of rights and opportunities. They cannot allow themselves to be bullied and intimidated like this. It is an even bigger irony when their so-called Women’s Minister is not only totally silent on the issue but might also be one of the masterminds behind the sex conspiracies.”

This is shocking, I did not expect to be a victim – Nurul slams sex video conspirators

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Malaysia’s fastest-rising woman politician Nurul Izzah slammed her political enemies for bringing out the “sex” weapon against her as the country hurtled towards the 13th general election.

“Not just against women, it is not a good thing to do against anyone. I think what Saifuddin mentioned yesterday is very clear. So there is nothing more that needs to be said except that we deplore and we reject such gutter politicking,” Nurul told Malaysia Chronicle at the sidelines of a press conference on Wednesday.

“And Malaysians I am sure will not be taken in and reject such politics. This is shocking and I guess when I joined politics, I did not expect to be a victim but certainly we do what we can. We remain in the fight because we remain on the side of the truth.”

Don’t allow M’sian women to be abused and intimidated

Some women groups and activists have begun to react with anger at the news that agents of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno-BN coalition had threatened to release a video they alleged contained explicit footage of Nurul.

They are demanding tough action from the prime minister, who also happens to be the Women’s Minister. So far, there has only been deafening silence from him and the ministry.

“Obviously, this is politically related because of the timing which is too close to the general election to be ignored. But something urgent and strong must be done to protect women because we are very vulnerable to these sort of slander,” Tan Poh Lai, the deputy Women’s chief of PKR Johor, told Malaysia Chronicle.

Nurul sues EC chief, EC, NRD and the govt over “dirty” Lembah Pantai electoral roll

Written by  Malaysia Chronicle

PKR MP for Lembah Pantai Nurul Izzah Anwar has filed a lawsuit against the Election Commission chairman, the EC, the Director-General of the National Registration Department and the Government of Malaysia to compel them to clean up the electoral roll in her constituency.

The suit makes Nurul the second Opposition lawmaker to go to the court for redress over a sticky situation that threatens to swamp the integrity of Malaysia’s 13th general election.

“We tried our very best to engage with the EC to the point to that we raised the issue in Parliament in the last session and we have engaged with all the relevant groups and bodies. Unfortunately the irregularities remain, we are left to with no recourse but to seek a legal solution,” Nurul told a press conference on Tuesday.

‘Pakatan disparages Hisham, not police’

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah criticises the Home Minister for ‘scary statements’ on political violence.

a

PETALING JAYA: PKR today lashed out at Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein for claiming that Pakatan’s alleged criticisms about the police force caused political violence to escalate.

They stressed that their issues had always lay with the Home Minister, not the police, and that any rise in crime was the fault of Hishammuddin’s “bias”.

“Pakatan Rakyat has always disparaged him, the minister, and not the police force,” PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah told FMT in a text message today.

“For the record, Pakatan has argued in favour of better pay for the police force, re-deployment and setting up of the IPCMC [Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commissions],” she added’

Yesterday, Hishammuddin said that Pakatan’s alleged habit of “calling the police names” disrupted democratic process and provoked violence.

There’s no such thing as revenge, you don’t know us at all – Nurul tells off Najib, Hisham

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman, Malaysia Chronicle

When Nurul Izzah Anwar won the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat in 2008, she became the toast of the nation. Her political enemies from Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno party lost no time trying to tie her up in controversy.

Make her life difficult, they certainly did. They also dented her political standing with their accusations. Even so, just ask around the length and breadth of Malaysia – who do the people think will be the first woman prime minister of Malaysia or even the first Prime Minister to come from the Pakatan Rakyat Opposition, and her name will invariably crop up.

Why? Well, the combination of reasons most commonly cited are, firstly, Nurul’s political heritage, her intelligence and savvy, an enviable image of being someone you can trust. And of course, there’s her good looks, decorum and fine sensitive features – crowd winners by any account. Many of those offering their opinions would also complete their assessment by comparing her to Thai premier Yingluck Shinawat.
……….

Be that as it may, this year, Malaysia will hold its 13th general election and Nurul’s most immediate challenge will be to defend her parliamentary seat won against all odds in 2008.

Umno: Nurul Izzah ‘out of control’ in forcing debate with minister

UPDATED @ 06:38:48 PM 24-02-2013
By Syed Jaymal Zahiid
February 24, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — Umno accused PKR lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar today of using provocation and slander in a publicity campaign to tarnish the image of her arch nemesis Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin to Lembah Pantai constituents.

The party’s Lembah Pantai division lodged a police report today against Nurul Izzah, lashing out at the PKR vice-president for going “out of control” in trying to publicise a debate with Raja Nong Chik when the minister had already repeatedly turned down her invite.

In the report, made available via email to the media this evening, Lembah Pantai Umno information chief Datuk Ibrahim Tambi Chik pointed out that despite Raja Nong Chik’s refusal, Nurul Izzah (picture) has been putting up banners and posters to promote the debate across the constituency.

“The Lembah Pantai MP has stubbornly continued to blow the issue out of proportion… urging people to attend the debate session even though there was no agreement in writing from the ministry on his attendance,” the division said in a statement here.

Why fear a debate, Raja Nong Chik? — Kunjuraman Karuppan

FEB 24 — If you go to Bangsar or just about anywhere in the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency, you’ll see banners and buntings with the smiling face of Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

But you won’t see his face tonight at a debate with Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Instead, the Federal Territories Minister has got his boys to lodge a report against Nurul Izzah for for going “out of control” in trying to publicise the debate which he had turned down.

You know what is sad? Not only does he refuse to debate, the minister and wanna-be MP has the gall to lodge a police report over the debate.

This is an unelected man, made a senator and put in charge of federal territories and he is afraid to debate.

This is an unelected man who has used City Hall resources and even the vast machinery of the state for various projects in the parliamentary seat but fears a debate.

Hero’s welcome for Nurul Izzah at UM forum

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was given a hero’s welcome at a Universiti Malaya forum yesterday after she was dropped from speaking at the event as a result of government pressure.

Attending the forum yesterday afternoon as a member of the audience, Nurul Izzah walked into the lecture hall and was greeted by cheers and loud applause from the floor as she proceeded to take a seat in the front row.

The hall was packed with the crowd filling the walkways as well as the back of the hall.

The afternoon session of the forum was was originally slated to feature Nurul Izzah, together with PAS vice-president Husam Musa as well as Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah and Hulu Selangor MP P Kamalanathan.

After courting the displeasure of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Higher Education Ministry, the afternoon session of the day-long forum, organised by the Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (Umcedel), was replaced with a session by academicians.

All over Lembah Pantai, posters of a rodent-like creature have appeared. Nose twitching, it insists on wishing you a Happy New Year, or a Happy FT Day or whatever the occasion is. Recently it was all over town in person, attempting to ingratiate itself with the Chinese residents of Lembah Pantai, by handing out oranges to all and sundry. Closer examination reveals the creature to be none other than the inept FT Minister, Raja Nong Chik.

Nong Chik appears to have got it into his head that he can beat the incumbent MP for Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah Anwar, at the next elections. To this end he has gone around painting various neglected buildings. The neglect in the first place, of course, was of BN’s doing.
……….

Nong Chik is also burdened by the fact that his 24-year old daughter ‘won’ a RM30 millon project without a tender from the BN government. Which reminds everybody in Lembah Pantai of Shahrizat Jalil; thrown out of office by Nurul in 2008; whose husband won a  RM250 million contract which he then proceeded to splurge on a series of luxury condominiums all over the world.
………….

Nay, she will crush him.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar will be resuming her underdog role for Election 2013 as she is likely to face federal minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin — with the resources of the state to back him —  in the battle for Lembah Pantai.

The federal territories and urban wellbeing minister has been spotted stepping up his visits to the parliamentary seat lost to the Barisan Nasional (BN) at the polls five years ago when former minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was roundly beaten by then-political greenhorn, Nurul Izzah.

“I work tirelessly. Frankly, I’d say every day, we try our best to not only give the best service and I am ready until the end to fight in Lembah Pantai,” the first-term MP told The Malaysian Insider in a recent exclusive interview to arrest rumours that she was looking to contest elsewhere.

Citing Khmer Rouge, Nong Chik says change could be bad

By Syed Jaymal Zahiid
February 15, 2013

SEGAMBUT, Feb 15 — A change of government could produce a disastrous outcome just as what Cambodia had experienced under the bloody Khmer Rouge regime, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said today.

The Federal Territories minister added that the political divide in Malaysia echoes the division that paved way to Khmer Rouge’s ascent in the 1970s, pointing out that what followed after the group took power was the mass murder of close to three million of its own people.

………..

Leaders from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition had, in the past, made similar warnings, saying voters could send the country to ruins if they put in power an untested government at Election 2013.

——-

Nurul Izzah had thrown down the gauntlet to Raja Nong Chik on Feb 8 to debate his claim that she spends more time criticising him than serving the people of Lembah Pantai.

Raja Nong Chik had rejected the challenge, citing the fact that the polls are imminent.

Nurul Izzah goes after Nong Chik for debate

PKR’s Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has sent a letter to Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, pursuing her bid for a debate to rebut his allegations about her.

Her aide Fahmi Fadzil said the letter was sent this morning to his office at the Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Ministry in Putrajaya, where assistant secretary-general Khalilul Rahman Kamaruzaman accepted it.

Raja Nong Chik, who heads the ministry and Lembah Pantai Umno, is likely to contest the parliamentary seat in the upcoming general election.

Fahmi said the proposed date for the debate is Feb 24, and the venue is at the Pantai Permai apartments in Pantai Dalam.

“We sent the (letter) because Raja Nong Chik had alleged that Nurul Izzah does not do anything in her constituency. This is serious. Based on our records, she has resolved many problems,” Fahmi told Malaysiakini.

The choice

A Daughter of Destiny

By any measure, Nurul Izzah binti Anwar is an impressive woman. With degrees in the hard and social sciences, two children, and a parliamentary seat she won from the popular Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil three years ago, all before the age of 30, her track record would be impressive in a woman twice her age.  Born just before her father took up his role as Dr. M’s right hand, she has stepped seamlessly into the family business, a telegenic face for a movement of uneven popularity. With her natural gifts and obvious ambition, we boldly predict she’ll have a more illustrious career than her father and mother have, and not just because she was not one to try and betray her former boss nor because the chances of her being accused of sodomy are next to nil.
…………..
This episode belies the one downside to Nurul Izzah’s rapid rise:  She has the obvious skills to be a first-rate politician and leader, but none of the seasoning or hard-earned wit to apply them. She can tell us what she is against, but what she’s for is a trifle more elusive. On the other hand, given time, she may evolve into the kind of Opposition leader that is worth of a 21st century Malaysia.
