PAYING FOR PATRIOTISM: Come for Merdeka Day celebrations and we’ll pay!

Last May, the government held a “Million Youths Rally 2012” in Putrajaya, an event which some alleged was the government’s attempt to try and rival the success of the Bersih 3.0 rally.

The illusion of mass support by the youth was crushed with allegations of money and free food for those who attended………

Merdeka: The end of the fairy-tale

Mariam Mokhtar | August 31, 2012

Najib has made a lot of mistakes and has reneged on many promises. His Merdeka slogan, ‘Janji DiTepati’ is an affront to the rakyat.

COMMENT

The nation is 55 years old today. To read some newspapers you’d think that it was Barisan Nasional, and not the people, which achieved independence from Britain.

To learn that the Merdeka Day celebrations at the Bukit Jalil Stadium is “by invitation only”, is appalling. Who decreed that the rakyat had to be members of the “select” BN club to celebrate Merdeka? If Merdeka is exclusively BN, then the slogan “1Malaysia” is rendered meaningless.

As with many things in Umno, the taxpayers are made to pay for the prizes and the ceremony, but they are denied the opportunity to win any of the prizes or even attend the event.

………….

The doctored photo

Perhaps, the most glaring example of using the media to create the illusion that Najib is a man of the people and a much loved leader, was when DAP Senator S Ramakrishnan alleged that The Star newspaper’s front-page photo of Najib’s Hari Raya open-house, on Aug 21, was a “blatant lie”.

The photo has come under intense scrutiny and the allegations that Bernama doctored the photo, raises serious doubts about the ethics of Bernama. If the allegations are true, why did they do it?

From a personal viewpoint, why would well-wishers wave Malaysian flags at a Raya open-house?

Although availability of public seats inside Stadium Nasional for the federal government’s National Day celebration is uncertain, the ability to score lucky draw numbers for the mammoth event seems more probable.

According to a post on the 55 Tahun Merdeka, Janji Ditepati Facebook page, in order to stand a chance to win many of the lucrative prizes, one merely has to collect a red card from the local Information Department branch.

When contacted, the ministry’s Public Relations Department spokesperson Jasminawati Jamin confirmed that the website is authentic.

NONEThe 55 Tahun Merdeka, Janji Ditepati Facebook page indicated that the top prize offered is the pride of the current Proton fleet – the Preve.

Also up for grabs are four motorcycles manufactured by another local automotive brand, Modenas.

But oddly enough, the other prizes does not have the same nationalistic flavour.

These foreign makes include a Chevrolet Cruze, a Vespa scooter, 50 Huawei tablet computers, 10 fixie bicycles and three Blackberry smartphones.

Stranger still, another prize consist of two return tickets to London – the capital of the very country from which Malaya gained independence 55 years ago.

Final prize line-up

The range of prizes is different from what was promised during a technical briefing by the Information Department yesterday.

The ministry’s Selangor Culture and Arts Department director Ghazali Bidin told reporters yesterday that prizes also included an Apple iPhone 4S and the company’s latest iPads.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — An email from the Prime Minister’s Department has revealed that Putrajaya will offer cash rewards and souvenirs to some 1,000 university students who agree to participate in the coming National Day celebrations here.

In the email from the department’s National Unity and Integration unit sighted yesterday by The Malaysian Insider, the students are expected to wave flags or “do some simple flag formation” when the national anthem “Negaraku” or 1 Malaysia songs are played during two events on National Day eve — one at Dataran Merdeka in the morning and the second at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in the evening.

“A T-shirt is provided in the morning and a token of appreciation in cash is rewarded to each participant.

“For the evening event, no T-shirt is provided,” a department official said in the email addressed to a university here.

When contacted, the official told The Malaysian Insider that the participants are expected to attend five days of rehearsal from today, and will be paid RM20 and provided lunch for each day.

“So for five days, each participant will be paid RM100,” the official said.

The official added that the department hopes to rope in at least 1,000 participants aged between 18 and 35 years from several universities across the city.

A total of 25 buses will be provided to ferry the participants from various checkpoints across the city to the two event venues.

The official’s email also specified that only Chinese and Indian participants were required for the functions.

Asked why, the official said he was not aware of the reason.

“Maybe they (the department) already have enough Malays,” he suggested.
