Report: Mat Rempit scaring off tourists in KL

March 12, 2018

The bikers have turned the roads around the historical Dataran Merdeka into their own racing circuit on Sunday nights.

KUALA LUMPUR: Illegal motorcycle racers, known locally as Mat Rempit, are giving tourists a bad impression of the federal capital, the New Straits Times reports.

On Sunday nights, from 10pm onwards, they “own” the roads around the historical Dataran Merdeka, causing a nuisance to motorists and unsuspecting tourists unlucky enough to be in the area.

The New Straits Times said large groups of youngsters could be seen lining the pedestrian walkway while waiting for the races to start.

Some even showed off their stunts to the crowd, revving their motorcycles loudly.

Tourists admiring the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad building hurried to take their last shots before quickly leaving the square.

A Mat Rempit, identified only as Zul in the report, said the bikers would race to Chow Kit and back to Dataran Merdeka via Jalan Pahang and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

The office boy said it was his routine to head to Dataran Merdeka every Friday and Sunday for the “action”.

On Saturdays, he would head to other “tracks”, including one in Serdang.

“On Saturdays, the traffic is heavy and there are many roadblocks. We are practically left to ourselves on Sundays, unless there are those rare roadblocks,” he was quoted as saying as he waited for his turn to race.

Under the law, generated noise that goes beyond 75dB (decibel) is considered “pollution”.

A technical team from the ministry, which would be part of the enforcement team, would carry out on-the-spot tests for action to be taken under Section 23 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

Under the act, offenders can be slapped with a maximum fine of RM100,000 or jailed not more than five years, or both.

Mustafa told the New Straits Times that a loophole in the law allowed mat rempit to take back their modified bikes once the legal process was concluded.

Concern over high number of motorcycle thefts in Malacca

MALACCA: The high number of motorcycle thefts in the historic city is hindering police in maintaining the lowest crime index in Malaysia.

The thefts contributed to 41% of the total crime index recorded each year, said Malacca deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Shahrizan Che Mat Din yesterday.

He said motorcycle thefts were still a major issue for police and most of the cases were caused by the carelessness of motorcyclists.

Most thefts occurred in public areas where the machines were not securely locked and engine was left running, he said.

Last year, there were 1,523 cases, he said, adding that based on reports lodged by victims, most of the machines were stolen from public motorcycle parking bays, condominiums, villages and flats.

There were also cases where the keys were left in the ignition switch while the owners were away from home, he said.

A superbike would be a Yamaha YZFr1, Honda CBR1000, Suzuki GSXR1000, Kawasaki Ninja.. I just Mentioned some the the litre bikes but several of the manufacturers offer 600’s and 750’s that are very powerful bikes but you have to get into the high RPM range to juice the power out of them. If you are doing triple digits after just a brief twist of the throttle, you are on a superbike.

Mat Rempit to Help Fight Crime? This is a Signal that Hishammuddin Hussein’s Time as Home Minister is Up!

The Home Ministry wants to engage the mat rempit to help fight crime in the country. Describing the idea as out-of-the-box thinking, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the ministry had asked selected non-governmental organisations and groups to enlist the bikers’ co-operation in the fight against crime. –
Calling this an ‘out-of-the-box thinking’ goes to show that our minister is really suffering from a serious mental block or he is totally not qualified to hold the position. Any credible home minister would have instructed his top home security officials to come out with a comprehensive plan and strategy to curb and combat crime. –
Second, he should address the issue of a lack of police personnel doing patrolling and just desk jobs. He should be mindful not to abuse security forces to meet political ends or using them to stop freedom of assembly and expression. –
The full brunt of security forces should be used to protect and guarantee public safety.
Hence, using mat rempit to help fight crime is not even an idea, let alone an ‘out-of-the-box thinking’. It epitomizes Hishammuddin’s state of mind and his suitability to continue serving as our home minister. No wonder, he has a knack to ignore distortions in crime statistics posted by his ministry. –
I am not looking down on these mat rempits. The right thing to ask them to do is to get a job and help contribute to this nation’s development. –
Second, these mat rempits are not trained and equipped to handle criminals. What if some of them get hurt or killed in the process of fighting crime? –
What if these mat rempits take Hishammuddin’s instruction and suggestion too seriously and start to act like enforcement officers and abuse their ‘power’? –
What if some of the criminals are fellow mat rempits too? Can we depend on them to take action against their own kind? –
If Hishammuddin is keen on this ‘idea’, he should encourage these mat rempits to attend interviews and apply for positions in the security forces. –
The last thing Hishammuddin should do is to belittle our intelligence with his so-called idea and out-of-the-box thinking. –
If our current home minister is feeling the fatigue, he can volunteer to step down and allow a fresher person to take over. –

Posted on August 31, 2012, Friday PUTRAJAYA: The Home Affairs Ministry (KDN) will again engage ‘Mat Rempit’ in tackling crime under the United Against Crime initiative. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said it would be meeting the group and relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) soon. “We are thinking outside the box. Just Because Mat Rempits have negative connotation doesn’t mean that we have to neglect them. “They will face challenges, criticisms and cynicism but if they stay true to their belief and we guide them the right way, what is impossible can become reality,” he told reporters after launching ‘Konvoi Jalur Gemilang Ikatan Rela/KDN’ programme here yesterday. The effort is continuation of KDN efforts involving stakeholders and authorities in fighting crime, including shopping mall owners and NGOs.

Mat rempits must be stopped

IT is clear that mat rempits have become a national problem like drug addicts, ah longs and illegal gamblers. Any further delay in arresting the mat rempit menace will cost the country and the people dearly. Crying over what is lost will not help, neither will it bring back what is gone, nor repair the damage incurred. A clear example is the condition of traffic policeman Kpl Mustaghni Tabri, 48, who is in a coma after being hit with a helmet by a fleeing mat rempit at a roadblock in Taman Gembira, Klang ( The Star, June 5). This is just the tip of the iceberg. I understand that many more cases of this sort had not been highlighted. Last weekend, I was travelling with a friend on the North-South Expressway and was shocked at what I witnessed. Throughout the stretch from the Sungai Petani toll until the Sungai Buloh toll we had different groups of Mat Rempits terrorizing the highway users.
