MALAYSIA HAS BOTH MAT REMPIT AND SUPERBIKERS
They are at opposite poles of Malaysia’s economic classes. Mat Rempit may soup up their bikes but these are still among the cheapest motorbikes available. Superbikers, on the other hand, ride the Mercedes Benz and BMW versions of motorbikes, many of which are more expensive than the average house.

Report: Mat Rempit scaring off tourists in KL
The bikers have turned the roads around the historical Dataran Merdeka into their own racing circuit on Sunday nights.

KUALA LUMPUR: Illegal motorcycle racers, known locally as Mat Rempit, are giving tourists a bad impression of the federal capital, the New Straits Times reports.
On Sunday nights, from 10pm onwards, they “own” the roads around the historical Dataran Merdeka, causing a nuisance to motorists and unsuspecting tourists unlucky enough to be in the area.
The New Straits Times said large groups of youngsters could be seen lining the pedestrian walkway while waiting for the races to start.
Some even showed off their stunts to the crowd, revving their motorcycles loudly.
Tourists admiring the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad building hurried to take their last shots before quickly leaving the square.
A Mat Rempit, identified only as Zul in the report, said the bikers would race to Chow Kit and back to Dataran Merdeka via Jalan Pahang and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
The office boy said it was his routine to head to Dataran Merdeka every Friday and Sunday for the “action”.
On Saturdays, he would head to other “tracks”, including one in Serdang.
“On Saturdays, the traffic is heavy and there are many roadblocks. We are practically left to ourselves on Sundays, unless there are those rare roadblocks,” he was quoted as saying as he waited for his turn to race.

[Exclusive] New law in place to tackle mat rempit menace

Under the law, generated noise that goes beyond 75dB (decibel) is considered “pollution”.
A technical team from the ministry, which would be part of the enforcement team, would carry out on-the-spot tests for action to be taken under Section 23 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
Under the act, offenders can be slapped with a maximum fine of RM100,000 or jailed not more than five years, or both.
Mustafa told the New Straits Times that a loophole in the law allowed mat rempit to take back their modified bikes once the legal process was concluded.

Concern over high number of motorcycle thefts in Malacca
MALACCA: The high number of motorcycle thefts in the historic city is hindering police in maintaining the lowest crime index in Malaysia.
The thefts contributed to 41% of the total crime index recorded each year, said Malacca deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Shahrizan Che Mat Din yesterday.
He said motorcycle thefts were still a major issue for police and most of the cases were caused by the carelessness of motorcyclists.
Most thefts occurred in public areas where the machines were not securely locked and engine was left running, he said.
…
Last year, there were 1,523 cases, he said, adding that based on reports lodged by victims, most of the machines were stolen from public motorcycle parking bays, condominiums, villages and flats.
There were also cases where the keys were left in the ignition switch while the owners were away from home, he said.

Not all Mat Rempits are involved in street racing; some of them perform crazy stunts for fun, such as the wheelie, superman (lying flat on the seat), wikang, and scorpion (standing on the seat with one leg during a wheelie). Mat Rempits usually travel in groups and race in bustling city centres on weekend nights. In recent times, Mat Rempits have been linked to gangsterism, gang robbery, street fighting, assault, vandalism, theft and bullying. Most motorcycles used by the Mat Rempits do not meet standard specifications, or have been modified extensively for greater speed, or just to make the exhaust noisier.

Some 300 superbikers staged a demonstration in front of Media Prima Bhd (MPB) headquarters in Petaling Jaya today in protest against a television programme which branded them as “pests”. The bikers claim that TV3’s Majalah 3 programme aired an item which unfairly placed the label on them and demanded that the presenter issue an open apology.
According to the group’s spokesperson Mohd Shahid Tasiran, the presenter had branded them as ‘pelesit jalanan’ (street locusts), which he said was akin to claiming that the bikers were Satanists. “The term used (by the presenter) is ‘pelesit jalanan’. Locusts cooperate with Satan, the Devil. We feel that they are calling us the Devil and ‘Road Satanists’. We want them to retract it,” said Mohd Shahid. The programme had included a staged arrest of bikers speeding and performing wheelies on the highway.
A camera crew recorded the event while the presenter lauded the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and uttered the term which the bikers found offensive. The following week, TV3 apologised for not clearly stating that the arrest of was staged. However, bikers have expressed outrage online over the presenter’s refusal to apologise Bikers demand apology over ‘pest’ tag …………….

GEORGE TOWN: The merriment of more than 150 Mat Rempit and about 100 of their pillion riders was cut short when they were rounded up by the police in Jalan Bukit Gambier here. The road hooligans were made to push their machines for at least 5km to the northern region marine police base in Batu Uban during the six-hour operation codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan. However, none of them seemed to be sorry as they could be seen joking among themselves while pushing their machines to the marine base which was about two hours away. 100 Mat Rempit take 7km walk of shame
GEORGE TOWN: It was a long journey back for more than 100 illegal road racers who were ordered to push their bikes from a hypermarket in Gelugor to the city’s traffic police headquarters in Jalan Patani here. The Mat Rempit and about 70 of their pillion riders were soaked in sweat as they trudged the 7km-journey for over two hours yesterday in one of the biggest police crackdown on illegal racers here. Earlier, the group of largely-young motorcyclists had used the vicinity of the hypermarket as their racing circuit, revving their machines and performing stunts amid cheers of their supporters and other onlookers.
