A GREAT DEAL IS NOW KNOWN ABOUT THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE, AND ALSO ABOUT HOW A PROPER DIET HELPS REDUCE DISCOMFORT.
I have simplified the recommendations. If you want the whole works, that is, all the explanations, refer to the links at the end of this Post.

WHAT YOU EAT BEFORE AND DURING YOUR MENSTRUAL PERIODS CAN REDUCE YOUR DISCOMFORT!
TWO WEEKS BEFORE MENSTRUATION
Adjust your diet 2 weeks before the start of your period and it may reduce bloating and cramping (stomach pains).
1 There are some things you should eat.
Fruits
Vegetables
Whole grains
Eat brown rice and not white rice. Eat whole meal bread and not white bread. Massimo now sells whole meal bread.
Whole grains have B-complex vitamins and vitamin E to combat fatigue and depression.
2 There are some things you should eat less of. These kinds of food have saturated fat.
Red meat (duck, beef, pork and lamb)
Processed meat (burgers, sausages, ham and bacon)
Fried food (fried chicken, McD’s, KFC)
Butter
3 Avoid junk food such as sweets and chocolate, soft drinks and french fries.
4 Limit salty food to help reduce bloating.
5 For improved moods (to feel better) and to get back your energy, eat balanced meals and snacks at regular time intervals. Limit caffeine (found in Coca cola, Pepsi cola, tea, coffee), alcohol and drinks that have sugar added to them.
DURING PERIODS
Most women experience symptoms of bloating, fatigue, cramps, headache, digestive problems and mood swings before and during their menstrual cycle.
One of the best ways to prevent and treat these symptoms is through a healthy diet, which can also aid general health and overall well-being.
1 Avoid tea as tea can actually lead to greater menstrual discomfort. This is because tea has caffeine.
Caffeine in tea
Caffeine is a component of tea and all types of tea (except for herbal) contain caffeine. However, the amount of caffeine varies according to type. In general, Green tea contains the least caffeine, Black tea the most, and Oolong falls in the middle range.
- A cup of Green tea (6 oz) contains 8 to 36 mg of caffeine.
- A cup of Oolong tea contains 12 to 55 mg of caffeine.
- A cup of Black tea ranges from 25 – 110 mg.
However, ginger tea is good. It may be helpful in relieving nausea (dizziness which leads to the feeling of wanting to vomit) and bloating.
2 Avoid coffee which generally contains 60 – 180 mg of caffeine.
3 Drink enough water.
Excessive fluid retention will cause cramps. You get a dull, aching pain. One of the very best ways to help cut water retention is increase water consumption. Your body will, then, not have to retain water! You see, when you don’t drink enough water, your body may overcompensate by retaining extra water. That leads to cramps.
4 Pineapple is good for you as it contains high levels of bromelain, an enzyme thought to help relax muscles and therefore, prevent menstrual cramping.
5 Beans and peas reduce cramps by producing bulkier stools with higher water content.
6 Yoghurt will help cut your discomfort.

Good to chance upon your blog when I wanted some info about Master Oh Teik Toh. SMI plans to see him for an interview and would appreciate if you can let me know a little abt him. Eg how he and his students, as a judo master, discipline master etc. Hope you can assist. Thank you.
A WISE discipline master was Mr Teik Toh. He was my Form Teacher when I was in Form 3. He did two important things that showed his wisdom. Firstly, when I wanted to give up my post as class librarian since my assistant was so capable, he refused. I had to learn responsibility, he explained. He was right. Secondly, after he had caned me for the first time, he looked at me and said, “Hardened already? No point using the cane on you again.” When I had a fight with a classmate, we both had to write an essay on ‘The advantages and disadvantages of fighting in school’. We were required to read it out to the class. That put a stop to my worst behaviour.. It also saw my emergence as a writer.
