William Joseph Burns (born April 4, 1956) is an American diplomat and a former United States deputy secretary of state (2011–2014). He retired from the US Foreign Service in 2014 after a 33-year diplomatic career. Since 2014 he has served as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.[1]
Burns previously served as Ambassador of the United States to Jordan from 1998 to 2001, Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs from 2001 to 2005, Ambassador of the United States to the Russian Federation from 2005 to 2008, and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2008 to 2011.[2]
In January 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Burns to head the Central Intelligence Agency.[3][4]

- William J. Burns made $512,230 as President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He serves as a board member to Macro Advisory Partners (a shadow lobbying firm), Makena Capital Management, Allianz (a financial services company), International Paper, and as Senior Advisor to Blackstone. His Ethics Agreement stipulates that he will resign from his positions with the Carnegie Endowment, Macro Advisory Partners, Allianz, and International Paper (and liquidate his stock in the company). He resigned from his position with Makena Capital in December 2020. He holds up to $11,250,000 in various investment vehicles, including BlackRock products.
