KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 ― A former MARA Incorporated Sdn Bhd (MARA Inc) chairman is facing 22 charges for allegedly receiving bribes totalling RM33.45 million from controversial property purchases in Melbourne, Australia.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest of the former chairman, aged 65, at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at noon today.

“He will be taken to the Special Corruption Court here at 9am this Friday to face 22 bribery charges under Sections 16(a) and 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 as well as Section 2(4) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

“The suspect is alleged to have received bribes of RM33.45 million from the purchase of properties by MARA Inc in Australia,” he told Bernama today.

Meanwhile, according to MACC sources, investigations into the case began after news portal The Sydney Morning Herald reported last year that a Malaysian living in Australia was charged with bribing a foreign officer relating to the sale of the Dudley International House student dormitory in Melbourne to MARA Inc.

The Australian newspaper The Age also claimed that a group of very wealthy Malaysian officers had overpaid by A$4.75 million (RM13.8 million) for an apartment block in the city in 2013 and that the difference had been channelled to several people.

Dudley International House is a student dormitory bought by MARA, an agency that provides scholarships to Malaysian students furthering their studies overseas.

MARA Inc also owns a 12-storey building on Swanston Street, Melbourne that was purchased in 2012 with the media reporting that it had suffered losses of almost RM60 million in that transaction.

Annuar: Yes.

Journalist: So the prime minister had to approve this purchase before it was purchased?

Annuar: Again?

Journalist: Did the prime minister have to approve the deal before the purchase went through?

PM claims media twisted Mara boss’ remarks

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has claimed that certain media organisations had purportedly twisted the remarks of Mara chairperson Annuar Musa.

This is with regard to a quote attributed to Annuar that Najib had approved the purchase of a property in Australia, which has become the subject of scrutiny.

“The decision is made based on consensus by the economic council,” tweeted Najib, who is also finance minister.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported Annuar as saying that any investment made by Mara had to be approved by the Finance Ministry or the government economic council chaired by Najib.

“It is part of the procedure. It is brought to the Mara council and then to the Rural and Regional Development Ministry before it goes to the Finance Ministry or the economic council,” he said.

When Malaysiakini specifically asked the Mara chairperson if the prime minister had to approve the deal before the purchase was made, Annuar replied: “Yes, that is part of the procedure.

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) had conducted an internal probe on Mara Inc, about two months before Australian paper The Age reported on its controversial investment in Melbourne.

Annuar said the purchase of Dudley House in Melbourne was according to procedure and the National Economic Council was aware of it. He said they were not aware of claims that the value of the property had been  inflated or claims that officials had received kickbacks.

“Mara Inc officials have been given seven days to response to the allegations in writing,” he said.
