Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said that the gathering by Gerakan Pembela Ummah tomorrow in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur appears to be an attempt to create tensions.
βI donβt think they are trying to βmembela ummahβ (protect the faithful). This group thinks that they are the only ones helping Muslims and Malays.
βThis is causing tensions [β¦] they are trying to give the impression that Malays are in danger, despite the fact that the position of Malays and Islam is guaranteed,β he said.
Khalid, who is also the Amanah information chief, said this when asked for his opinion on the gathering which organisers said involved 300 Muslim NGOs and would attract some 7,000 people.
The theme of the event reads βMalaysia Baru Pasca PRU14: Islam Melayu Terancam!β (The New Malaysia post-GE14: Islam and Malays threatened!)
Previously, the organiser said the gathering was mainly to oppose possible attempts by the federal government toΒ recogniseΒ the Unified Examination Certificate.
Other government decisions, including the appointment of non-Muslims as the chief justice and the attorney-general are expected to be scrutinised during the event as well.
