Dr M: I will not rejoin Umno even if Najib steps down

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today reiterated that he would not rejoin Umno even if his successor Najib Abdul Razak steps down.

In a video that he uploaded to social media, he explained that this was because he rejected Umno, which he claimed had become a “rotten” party that was focused on obtaining “dedak” (bribes).

Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, was asked if he would return to Umno, a party which he had once helmed for two decades, if Najib was no longer prime minister.

“Initially, I tried to oust Najib, not Umno. But I found out that Umno was badly rotten, as they only prioritise their self-interest and their money instead of fighting for religion, race, and the people.

“Umno is no longer the same party as it was before, as it has been moulded by Najib and it has a different purpose from the Umno that was originally established.

“That’s why I am not going to return to Umno, the party which is rotten and prioritises its struggle for dedak instead of religion, race, and country,” he said.

Poll: M’kini readers believe Mahathir can be trusted

An overwhelming number of Malaysiakini’s English-language and Bahasa Malaysia readers have expressed their trust in former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

However, the same cannot be said for the news portal’s Chinese-language readers who expressed some reservations.

In a Malaysiakini poll titled “Do you trust Mahathir”, 75 percent of 11,200 respondents who took part in the Malay-language version of the poll expressed their trust in Mahathir upholding Pakatan Harapan’s agenda of reform, if it wins federal power while 69 percent of 8,300 English-language readers who voted, answered in the affirmative.

Chinese-language readers’ lack of trust in Mahathir was evident when only 63 percent voted yes for the same question.

Meanwhile, 69 percent of English-language respondents and 74 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers polled responded with “yes” when asked whether the opposition should be led by Mahathir.

Conversely, only 58 percent of the 2,200 Chinese-language readers who voted, responded with “yes” for the same question.

Interestingly, only 64 percent Chinese-language readers think that trustworthiness should be a factor for the opposition to work with Mahathir.

Most English and Bahasa Malaysia readers are of the opinion that trustworthiness is an important factor with 79 percent of English-language readers and 81 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers voting “yes’.

However, the English-language and Chinese-language readers lent somewhat similar responses, when asked for their opinion on whether Mahathir will return to Umno if he is successful in removing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak with Harapan’s help.

Sixty-one percent of the respondents of the English-language version of the poll and 60 percent of Chinese-language readers responded with “no”. On the other hand, 65 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers voted “no” to the question.
