Amanah picks Anwar as PM
AMANAH has endorsed a motion to pick Pakatan Harapan (PH) adviser Anwar Ibrahim to be prime minister should the opposition win the next general election.
On the final day of Amanah’s convention in Alor Setar, the 899 delegates approved the motion which was proposed by Amanah Johor without debate.
The Amanah convention also endorsed a motion for party president Mohamad Sabu and vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa to contest in Penang during the next elections.
The two Amanah leaders are from Penang.

Dr Mahathir helps former nemesis DAP raise RM250,000
IN his time, Dr Mahathir Mohamad had these politicians detained without trial.
But last night, he was in Penang to help these very people raise close to RM250,000.
The former prime minister, who is now chairman of the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan, was the main speaker at the DAP fundraising dinner at SPICE Arena in Bayan Baru, which was attended by more than 3,000 people.
His portrait, and those of DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, PKR de factor leader Anwar Ibrahim and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu were auctioned off at a starting bid of RM2,000 to raise funds for the party.

Kit Siang: Harapan to capture Putrajaya, Johor and Malacca in GE14
With mounting speculation that the 14th General Election will be called soon, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has outlined his three personal objectives for Pakatan Harapan.
“I have three personal objectives in GE14 – for Pakatan Harapan to capture power in Putrajaya, Johor and Malacca,” Lim said at a coffee shop ceramah in Malacca this morning.
Lim recalled that when he first left the state in 1986 to contest the Tanjong parliamentary seat, DAP’s aim was only to try and capture the Penang state government.
“That was the highest political ambition of the DAP three decades ago.
“But we did not succeed in capturing the Penang state government in the 1990 and 1995 general elections, although we laid the basis for the DAP’s eventual win in the 2008 and 2013 general elections,” he said.
Just 10 years ago, Lim said, it was still impossible to imagine that Umno and Barisan Nasional could be toppled in the polls.
“But there has been a change in the political landscape in Malaysia, and we are aiming not only for a change of the federal government in Putrajaya, but even talking about a change of government in several states,” he stressed.

Kit Siang: Umno and MCA playing contradicting race cards
DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has accused BN parties Umno and MCA of making contradicting and racially-charged statements in their criticism of Pakatan Harapan.
He referred to two articles published in theStar Online yesterday – one on the prime minister’s press secretary Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad accusing Lim of being the “top dog” of Harapan, and another on MCA publicity spokesman Ti Lian Ker making the same claim about Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad instead.
“Which is which? Is there a better example to illustrate the schizophrenia in BN, with Umno and MCA declaring the very opposite in public?
“Umno leaders and propagandists are trying to incite Malay communalism and hatred by disseminating the lie that Mahathir and other Malay leaders…are just my stooges and puppets; while MCA is trying to stir up Chinese racialism and chauvinism by accusing me (of being) a stooge and puppet of Dr Mahathir – or the former stooge and puppet of Anwar,” said the Gelang Patah MP in a statement today.

PAS Youth chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi has declared a vote for Pakatan Harapan would ultimately be a vote for DAP.
.
Khalil, who is the son of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, accused DAP of being a hypocrite and “hiding behind” the Harapan parties.
He also accused Harapan of inviting foreign intervention in the country which he said will result in Islam being victimised.
“Therefore, defeating BN and Harapan will be an important mission of salvation for the nation in the 14th general election,” he said.
Khalil said PAS was confident it can win at least 40 parliamentary seats and four state governments.

Dr M admits Anwar’s letter caused problems, says will end talks with PAS
Alyaa Alhadjri Published 6 Sep 2017, 6:11 pm
Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reiterated that the door is shut with regard to holding talks with PAS to avoid three-cornered fights in the upcoming general election.
However, he admitted that the letter from the coalition’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had caused problems as it provided the green light for PKR to continue engaging PAS.
“We will put a stop to that (negotiations).
“I hope so. I hope we can do that,” Mahathir told a town hall session in Putrajaya this evening.
.
Commenting further, Mahathir said there is no way that Harapan will accept PAS into the coalition as the party would insist on contesting in all the seats it was previously allocated in the 13th general election as a former member of Pakatan Rakyat.
“Not only (the seats) that they won but they contested. And that’s about 60 seats.
“If they take all the 60 seats, what is there left for Amanah and for us that have no seat except for Muhyiddin?” he said in reference to his own Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin Yassin who now remains to be Pagoh MP, a seat he held for seven-terms under a BN ticket.
PKR’s internal rift on the issue of negotiations with PAS had escalated with party vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s call for a special congress to allow its members to decide on the matter.
PAS, who has since formed its own Gagasan Sejahtera electoral pact, also reiterated that it would not have any political cooperation with Harapan despite Anwar’s blessing.

Dr M vetoes Anwar, says will kill PKR-PAS talks
PUTRAJAYA, Sept 6 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad pledged today to end PKR efforts to negotiate with PAS, to ensure the unity of the Pakatan Harapan pact.
This comes after de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that he had initiated the protracted talks, which Dr Mahathir said implied that PKR still harboured hopes of an electoral collaboration with the Islamist party.
“Anwar has openly said that they should continue to speak with PAS. As a group, we decided no more dealing with PAS. No way we can accept PAS into grouping,” he said, adding that this would complicate seat negotiations.
“We have decided as group no more dealing with PAS, but the statement by Anwar was that he will try and talk to old friends. We will put a stop to that,” Dr Mahathir said during a town-hall session today at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman also claimed that PAS has no intention of deposing the ruling Barisan Nasional, adding that the party only planned to spoil the contest between BN and PH.
The former prime minister said that PH parties are currently resolving internal problems and negotiating the allocation of seats among themselves.

Some say three-cornered fights are good for PH. Others say they will be bad. Good or bad, this is the new reality.

Kit Siang: Harapan must accept reality of three-cornered fights
DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said Pakatan Harapan must accept the reality that it will need to engage in three-cornered fights with PAS and BN.
“Harapan parties and leaders must face the political reality that there will be three-cornered fights involving PAS, even in Selangor, in the 14th General Election.
This is why the earlier this political reality is faced, the greater the chances that Harapan can beat Umno/BN even in three-cornered fights to bring about a change of a federal government in Putrajaya and the Johor government in Nusajaya for the first time in the nation’s history,” he said in a statement today.
Describing that Harapan was “fighting against time”, Lim emphasised the importance of the coalition in providing clarity.
“There is a need for a clarity of the political situation without any delay, and just as it is important that there should be time to reach out to the 3.5 million Umno members that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must be defeated to save Malaysia from global kleptocracy.
“Time is also needed to explain to the million PAS members that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s support for Najib and his global kleptocracy is something former PAS stalwarts Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, Fadzil Noor or Yusof Rawa would never have countenanced or supported,” he said.
Lim added the notion that three-cornered fights will benefit BN may not necessarily be true with new political dynamics in the country.
“I believe that if there is a three-cornered electoral contest in Johor in the 14 General Election, PAS will not win a single state assembly seat in Johor and the percentage of votes polled in the state by PAS candidates will be reduced to between 5 percent to 8 percent.
“This is because I do not believe that the majority of the PAS voters will agree with Hadi’s political support for Najib, the 1MDB and Malaysia becoming a global kleptocracy,” he said.
Lim stressed that Harapan must seize on the current momentum and should not turn back to “dilly-dallying and procrastination”.

Pakatan Harapan carves up states for GE14
PAKATAN Harapan (PH) is putting all its component parties’ strength to work, getting them to lead the campaign in specific states for the next general election after firmly shutting the door to PAS.
The PH presidential council meeting last night confirmed the leadership allocation of states with PKR and Bersatu given four Malay-majority states each, while DAP and Amanah will each be leading three states, a source who attended the meeting told The Malaysian Insight.
“PKR will chair PH in Selangor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Sabah.
“Bersatu has been given the responsibility to lead PH in Johor, Perak, Kedah and Perlis,” the source said on condition of anonymity.
The Malaysian Insight has also been made to understand that Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir will be Kedah PH chief.
Another source who was present at the meeting, which ended early this morning, said DAP had been allocated the states of Penang and Sarawak and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur.
“Amanah has been tasked to lead PH in Kelantan, Terengganu and Malacca,” said the source.
On August 10, PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the appointment of DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng as the chairman of Penang PH, while PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin would chair PH for Selangor and Johor respectively.
Dr Mahathir announced that Azmin, who is also PH vice-president, would be election director for the coalition and assist Muhyiddin, who chairs the election committee.
Shortly past midnight, PH issued a statement announcing it will not cooperate with PAS, ending months of speculation and uncertainty on the coalition’s position on the Islamist party despite a robust debate within PKR.
“Pakatan Harapan will not cooperate with PAS in the 14th general election and is preparing its strategy for the possibility of three-cornered contests in GE14,” said the statement signed by Dr Mahathir, president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and deputy presidents Muhyiddin, Mohamad and Lim.

Kit Siang soothes activists’ fears of PM Mahathir 2.0
DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has once against risen to defend foe-turned-ally Dr Mahathir Mohamad, this time against activists who fear that the nonagenarian will become prime minister again.
Addressing concerns raised by activist Haris Ibrahim in a news report, Lim said a consensus has not yet been reached among Pakatan Harapan parties on who will become prime minister should the coalition defeat BN in the next general elections.
The Gelang Patah MP reassured Haris that Harapan was committed to ensuring a change in prime minister, and stressed that all Harapan component parties were intent on bringing about reforms to “save Malaysia”.
“Haris and other political activists (are) invited to work with the Harapan secretariat to prepare the Harapan reform agenda to save Malaysia,” Lim said.
Haris in an FMT report today had said that while he was “thrilled” at the prospect of BN not being in power, he was more concerned about the implementation of reforms.
Lim’s remarks come a week after jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim also moved to defend Mahathir from critics.

As BN holds fast to race card, youth supporters demand end to racial politics
YOUTH at a Barisan Nasional-sponsored townhall last night demanded an end to racial politics even as the coalition’s senior leaders continue to play the race card to fish for support.
The audience at the Transformasi Nasional 50 session in Shah Alam, many of whom were BN supporters, wanted their elders to instead work on crafting a unified national identity.
The youth are demanding this while the BN seniors go at the opposition by jibing at the ethnic ancestry of its leaders, and offer Bumiputera status to select communities.
It is unclear if the demands, which were to be communicated to the Najib administration, would receive serious consideration.
Thinalan Rajagopalu of MIC Youth said it was wrong of the country’s leaders to use race to win votes. He advocated a culture of politics that would take care of all communities.
“We should use our politics to unite us. I disagree that it is our vernacular schools that are causing disunity. It’s our politicians who divide us,” said Thinalan, who was a member of the TN50 panel at the Karangkraf complex in Shah Alam last night.
.
The majority echoed Subki Idris and wanted the politicians to make Malaysia feel like home to every citizen regardless of creed, community or gender.
“The diversity of the future is unimaginable as Malaysians marry between races and their children learn different languages and may or may not be tied to a culture description given to them. So politicians must plan for this,” said Subki.
A member of the audience, who wished to be identified as Devan, said Malaysian politicians were still trapped in the old mindset of playing to communal fears for votes.
“We need leaders who can represent all races. Why are we still seeing racial incitement and why is there nothing done about it?”
.
PKR’s Afif said that there should not be an more second class citizens in Malaysia as the Constitution has already protected the Malays, the national language and the status of Islam.
.
Shahril of Umno Youth said while the audience may support multi-racial politics now, the true test will be when they are confronted with racism in real life.

Report: Two reasons why BN may lose GE14
Global Risk Insights says the Mahathir factor, coupled with the 1MDB scandal, could finally bring the opposition into power.
.
KUALA LUMPUR: Two factors could turn the tide against the ruling government in the next general election: Dr Mahathir Mohamad leading the opposition and the 1MDB scandal.
This is the assessment of Global Risk Insights, a world-leading publication for political risk news and analysis, which was founded at the London School of Economics.
Saying the next general election is significant because of the return of Dr Mahathir to active politics and the 1MDB scandal which continues to dog Prime Minister Najib Razak, it concludes that these two factors may be able to lead the opposition to an unprecedented victory.
.
The report says it is significant that Dr Mahathir, who served as prime minister between 1981 and 2003, has come out of retirement at age 92 to join the opposition coalition alongside Anwar Ibrahim, whom he had previously jailed, to defeat the party he once led.
Dr Mahathir is seen as a unifying figure for the fragmented opposition coalition, and someone whose leadership could help win over previously inaccessible rural constituencies.
The other factor is Najib’s association with the 1MDB scandal. US investigators have linked money allegedly taken from 1MDB to the accounts of his friends and associates.
Najib has consistently denied he is party to any embezzlement of 1MDB funds.
The report says GE14 could be a defining moment for Malaysian politics which has been plagued with corruption scandals, including the 1MDB scandal, the Felda Global Ventures scandal, the National Feedlot scandal and the Port Klang Free Trade Zone scandal.
It notes that people are increasingly becoming angry with systemic cronyism, corruption and inequality – not just in Malaysia but in numerous other countries from Brazil to Pakistan.

Mahathir credits Kit Siang alliance for boost in public perception
PH chairman says although his alliance with the DAP leader initially caused uneasiness among the electorate, the tide has now turned.
.
GEORGE TOWN: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad says his alliance with DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang is now a boon rather than the bane it was seen as before.
He said his alliance with Lim had initially caused uneasiness among the electorate, but that the tides had now turned.
“Many of my supporters were uneasy, and my support also took a dive after I became friends with my ‘enemies’.
“But today, people’s perception of me has improved, ever since my cooperation with Kit Siang and Anwar Ibrahim,” he said in his speech to some 1,000 people at the Penang PPBM Hari Raya open house here today.
Mahathir said he first became friends with Lim when the DAP veteran threw his support behind the Deklarasi Rakyat (DR) movement to save Malaysia.
“Although Kit Siang and I are friends, we used to be enemies before.
“But when it came to the DR, from the rakyat … parties and NGOs, we noticed that leaders had come to support the DR movement.
“This is the unity we achieved because of our similar objectives.”

Mahathir: Kit Siang turned down ministerial post in the 70s
Pakatan Harapan chairman says that if DAP leader had accepted Tun Abdul Razak’s offer for party to join BN, he would have become a minister.
SHAH ALAM: Lim Kit Siang once rejected an offer to become a minister, says former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as he rubbished talk of the DAP supremo eyeing the nation’s number one post.
The offer, according to Mahathir, came in the early 1970s when the late Tun Abdul Razak was prime minister, and DAP was offered the chance to join the then new Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, he said.
“Umno folks are so angry that I’m now good friends with Lim. They say if Umno falls, Lim will become the prime minister. But the fact is Lim could have been a minister.
“When Razak was forming BN he invited DAP, Gerakan and SUPP (Sarawak United Peoples’ Party).
“If Lim had wanted to become a minister, he would’ve joined. All those who joined got to be a minister. But he (Lim) didn’t even want to be a minister, what more a prime minister.”
.
Umno leaders, right-wing Malay NGOs and the Malay media have all repeatedly claimed that Lim was using the PH platform to become prime minister. PH leaders however have said the allegation was merely Umno’s ploy to scare the Malays from voting for the opposition.
In February this year, Mahathir admitted that the sentiment was partially his fault, having said that the DAP was an “evil party that wanted to control Malaysia and one that did not care about the fate of the Malays”. He had also admitted how wrong he was in saying so previously.
And in the recently-announced PH leadership line-up, Lim’s name was visibly absent.
