Did business rivalry lead to Penang woman’s death?
PETALING JAYA: The woman who was recently shot dead in Penang was “heavily involved” in her husband’s moneylending business, according to a close friend who said business rivalry could have led to the fatal gangland-style shooting.
The friend, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Ruby Lee Poh Ai, 49, was also very close to the expatriate community in Penang, spoke fluent English and attended parties with the elite.
“Everyone knows her. We all know that she and her husband ran a moneylending service.
“I suspect this could be due to business (rivalry), but this is our guess. We are deeply shocked at her passing and we mourn for her,” the person close to Lee told FMT.
Lee, the owner of a logistics company, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Bayan Lepas on Tuesday.
Gunmen on a motorcycle fired 10 shots at her BMW, six of which hit her, killing her on the spot.

DAP: Penang shooting shows criminals not afraid of police
PETALING JAYA: DAP has questioned Putrajaya’s ability to curb firearm-related crime following reports of a 49-year-old woman who was shot dead while driving in Bayan Lepas, Penang, yesterday.
In a statement today, DAP assistant national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching said the shooting highlighted concerns over the state of gun control in Malaysia.
She questioned the accuracy of government figures on crime, bringing up a written parliamentary reply by Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Nov 15, in which he cited 249 incidents of firearm-related violence between 2014 and September 2016.
According to Zahid, Teo said, the 249 cases covered 105 cases of murder, 117 cases of attempted murder, and 27 cases of armed robbery.
Only 122 of the 249 cases, or 49%, have been solved so far, she added.
In a parliamentary reply dated Nov 8 however, Teo said, Zahid stated that in the first nine months of 2016, reported firearm-related cases stood at 24 for murder, 27 for attempted murder, and 31 for armed robbery.
“If 31 cases of armed robbery had been reported in the period between January and September of 2016, how is it possible there were only 27 cases of armed robbery happening between 2014 and September 2016, as disclosed by Ahmad Zahid in his previous reply?” she asked.
“In the short span of a week, Ahmad Zahid the home minister gave two conflicting answers, showing a lack of transparency the government has over crime statistics.”
The Kulai MP also asked where criminals had acquired their weapons, citing government figures that in the nine months between January and September 2016, there had been 82 cases of firearm-related violence – an average of nine cases per month.

Penang murder: Woman not pregnant, no triad link
GEORGE TOWN: The 49-year-old woman who was gunned down at Bayan Lepas yesterday was not pregnant nor was she involved in triad activity as rumoured, Penang police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said today, demanding a stop to such rumours.
He said media outlets which capitalised on such rumours were “unethical”, as the information on such rumours was based on pure conjecture.
“She was not pregnant. At the moment, there is no indication it (the case being) involves ‘kongsi gelap’ (triad).
“We have not even released the deceased name as the next-of-kin has yet to claim the body. That is standard practice in cases like this.
“We have some leads on the case, so give us some time to investigate,” Chuah told reporters at the state police headquarters here today.
When asked about the victim’s husband, Chuah said the woman was married to an owner of an entertainment outlet.

Gunman fires about 10 shots at 49-year-old victim, hitting her six times in the chest

GEORGE TOWN • A woman was shot dead by an unknown gunman while driving her BMW in Penang yesterday afternoon, police said. The 49-year-old victim died from gunshot wounds in the chest.
Police identified her as Penang resident Ruby Lee Poh Ai, The Star newspaper reported.
The close-range shooting took place in a residential neighbourhood in Sungai Dua, south of state capital George Town, at 5.45pm.
It was near the office of Ms Lee, who owned a logistics business, according to Sin Chew Daily.
Several bullet holes were found on the window of her car.
After the shooting, the white BMW crashed into the back of a four-wheel-drive vehicle before coming to a stop near a double-storey house.
Penang Criminal Investigation Department chief Zainol Samah said preliminary investigations showed that the woman “was not linked to any gang member and the case has nothing to do with gang activities”.
He said she was not a datin or datin seri. A datuk seri was among 22 men charged in court on Monday with being members of Gang 24, an organised criminal group.
