Rice, sawi but no kangkong…

MCA joins in rice giveaways, Harapan supporters get sawi

K KANGSAR POLLS Groceries seems o be theme for Kuala Kangsar by-election rallies.

At Jalan Datoh, Kuala Kangsar, about 100 people who attended the MCA Parents’ Day and ‘Yang Benar’ ceramah returned home hugging 10 kg bags of rice each, while Pakatan Harapan supporters clutched sawi bunches.

One rally-goer at the MCA event told Malaysiakini she had to register earlier so she can redeem the rice.

“I was told I can get a pack of rice and probably a hamper (of goods) by showing up at this event,” she says.

“We can get the rice after the ceramah finish,” she says while sitting patiently through the event.

‘Yang Benar’ is the theme of MCA’s campaign truck which doubles up as a stage.

It made its third appearance at the Kuala Kangsar by-election today, with much of the two-hour event used to attack DAP, Amanah and PAS over the hudud issue.

But the crowd were clearly there for the goodies stacked high against a wall adorned with election posters.

Some attended with their family members to maximise their loot, hauling home up to four bags per family.

MCA Wanita chief Heng Seai Kie, who gave out the first rice bag, said she is in the dark over why rice is given out and directed Malaysiakini to get more information from the organisers – the BN district polling centre committee.

Perak BN did not engage paragliders, says menteri besar

The Perak Barisan Nasional had nothing to do with the two paragliders who bore the coalition’s flag during nomination for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-election last Sunday, said Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

“We do not know anything about them, and leave it to the authorities to conduct the investigation,” DZambry told reporters after chairing a coordination meeting on the Kuala Kangsar by-election in the Perak royal town today.

Kuala Kangsar by-election police spokesman ACP Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latiff said yesterday the paragliders had not obtained approval from the Department of Civil Aviation.

Nuclear physicist is Amanah candidate for K Kangsar

Parti Amanah Negara has chosen nuclear physicist Ahmad Termizi Ramli as its by-election candidate in the traditional Umno base of Kuala Kangsar where PAS is also contesting.

Amanah president Mohamed Sabu announced Termizi’s candidacy in the presence of Pakatan Harapan leaders in Kuala Kangsar tonight.

In accepting his nomination, Termizi described his candidacy as a heavy responsibility particularly as the by-election comes amid the 1MDB scandal.

“It is a turning point for the country… it is whether we choose to create history to save the country or condemn it,” he said, lamenting that the country’s international reputation is in shambles.

Mohamad later urged support for Termizi in the upcoming by-election.

Among the leaders present were PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Harapan general secretary Saifuddin Abdullah.

Termizi, 61, hails from Kampung Suak Petai in Manong, Kuala Kangsar.

He was a physics professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia before retirement.

Syed Rosli gets death threats for wanting to stand in KK

June 1, 2016

Umno Youth member believes party members are afraid his decision to contest in by-election would upset BN’s chances.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth member Syed Rosli Jamalullail has claimed he had received death threats from Umno members immediately after he announced his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the Kuala Kangsar by-election.

“After my announcement, I received calls, text messages and comments on social media, threatening to hurt me or kill me.

“Some even threatened to set my food stall on fire,” the Taman Cempaka Umno Youth assistant secretary told FMT.

Syed Rosli believes that the threats came about as many were unhappy with his intention to contest in the by-election, which could spoil Barisan Nasional’s chances.

Syed Rosli also dismissed speculation that he was sponsored by former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a bid to split the votes.

He went on to explain that the main reason he wanted to contest in the by-election was to send a message to Umno’s top leadership that they should consider fielding locals in Kuala Kangsar instead of naming an “outsider”.

UMNO members who become candidate, proposer, seconder at Kuala Kangsar by-election will be sacked

PUTRAJAYA: UMNO member who becomes a candidate, proposer or seconder of an opposition party will be sacked, said party UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He said the matter was already enshrined in the party constitution and firm action would be taken against any party member who opposed UMNO.

Tengku Adnan said this when asked to comment on the action of UMNO Youth member Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamalullail’s announcement on social media that he would be contesting as an independent candidate at the Kuala Kangsar by-election because he was disappointed with Barisan Nasional’s (BN) selection of candidate.

Syed Rosli is also the Taman Cempaka UMNO branch Youth assistant secretary.

“If it is true he will be contesting, he will be sacked… Let’s just wait for the June 5 (nomination date),” he told reporters after handing out Ramadhan contributions to 52 surau and a briefing for tithe recipients, here, Tuesday night.

Umno man: Sorry for the profanity, but did Mastura cry to PM?

Syed Rosli claimed that he used the term “pu**mak” out of anger.
“There is information that she cried in front of the prime minister in order to become a candidate – I’m not accusing – but Mastura should give an explanation about the accusation as its circulating in Kuala Kangsar and social media.”

An Umno Youth member has apologised for using foul language against BN’s candidate for the Kuala Kangsar by-election Mastura Mohd Yazid.Mastura Mohd Yazid.

However, Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamalulllail also wanted her to clarify allegations that she cried to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“I am prepared to meet her, I’m only human and not immune to mistakes. I have deleted the posting that insulted Mastura,” he told Malaysiakini.

Syed Rosli claimed that he used the term “pu**mak” out of anger.

“I wrote the (Facebook) status because I was very disappointed. I tend to shoot my mouth off and I’m hot tempered.

“I was being frank when using inappropriate words against Mastura and Umno. I was venting my anger,” he said.

On the same note, Syed Rosli reiterated that the widow of Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan should not contest in the June 18 by-election.

“I am of the opinion that Mastura does not have the experience…She will not be able to continue her husband’s legacy,” he said.

The Umno man, who is planning to contest the seat as an independent candidate despite the warning from party leaders that he would be sacked, said there are others more qualified to be fielded as a candidate in the by-election.

Although repentant over his crude Facebook post, Syed Rosli, however, repeated his allegation that Mastura might be “power crazy”.

The ‘invisible’ Kuala Kangsar widow
By Zakiah Koya

Can one be invisible and yet win an election? Will the people vote for someone they have never seen and do not know if he or she can walk, talk or perform the duties once elected? WIll the voters vote on sentimentality alone, because the one they formerly elected died in a helicopter crash and this new candidate is his mourning wife, who insists on running for election but insists that she has to mourn? Will a Malay majority constituency vote in a widow who will be mourning at home but have been instructed to campaign online?

Looks like Umno (and Barisan Nasional presumably) think so, for they will nominate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid, the 55-year-old wife of Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, who was killed in the helicopter crash with five others during the recent Sarawak state election for the Kuala Kangsar by-election come June 5.

Mastura, a lawyer by training, seems to be in a spot, despite apologising profusely for not being able to campaign openly, for she has to ‘perform her religious duties’.

Umno either has a problem finding any other candidate, or thinks that MP-ship is a family affair. Or Umno thinks that a sad, mourning widow, who is strictly performing her iddah, will touch the hearts of the Malay majority voters.

Maybe they want to make her look more ‘religious’ than PAS  candidate Perak PAS women’s wing chief Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad.
