Helicopter crash in Sarawak: 5 dead and recovered; 1 missing…

LINGGA: The search for victims of the helicopter tragedy in Sebuyau appears to have unearthed its fifth victim.

Marine police combing the search area found a body in Tanjung Peleban, some two kilometres upstream from the Lingga town jetty at the Batang Lupar river.

The remains were then taken to the jetty, where it arrived about 6.45pm.

It was later examined by a police forensic team from the Disaster Victims Identification unit.

It is understood that police have already identified the body, as the person’s MyKad was intact among the possessions found.

Parts of missing copter found near Batang Lupar River, says PM

Parts of the missing helicopter in Sarawak were found near the Batang Lupar river, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced in Kuching today.

The parts included a floatation device, a chair, part of a door, part of a rotor and part of the body of the helicopter, he told a press conference.

KUCHING: Abidin Supardi, the private secretary to Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Noriah Kasnon, was supposed to have been on board the helicopter which went missing en route from Betong to Kuching, yesterday.

He said he had boarded a helicopter with Noriah from Kuching to Betong to attend a ministry programme there with commodity entrepreneurs.

For that flight, he had taken over the spot originally slated for Kuala Kangsar Member of Parliament Datuk Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad, who is also Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairman.

“I took over Datuk Wan’s (Wan Mohammad Khairil) place because he needed to fly in earlier to monitor preparations for the event we were attending.

KUCHING: A multi-agency search and rescue team comprising more than 100 men will focus their search for the helicopter which went missing here to three areas, namely Sri Aman, Simunjan and Betong.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the team included 40 men from the General Operation Force, marine police (13), Fire and Rescue Department (39) and Civil Defence Department (30).

“The SAR mission will focus our search in these three divisions,” Sabtu added. Sabtu said an earlier team deployed by police to Triso had returned with no results after combing the area more than three times.

Deputy minister among VIPs feared on board missing helicopter

KUCHING: Six individuals including a deputy minister are believed to be on a helicopter which has gone missing in Sarawak.

According to reports, air traffic controllers lost contact with the helicopter at 5pm on Thursday while it was near Sebuyau.

It is believed to have been travelling from Betong to Kuching.

Department of Civil Aviation Director Datuk Azharudin Abdul Rahman has confirmed the reports, saying that a search and rescue operation has been launched.

Noriah is also  Sungai Besar MP.
