Uber comes to Ipoh

Ride-sharing service, Uber will be available in Ipoh during the month of February.

Uber Malaysia, which recently celebrated its second anniversary in Kuala Lumpur, will have its vehicles plying the streets of Ipoh the whole of next month to offer those back in their hometown for the festivities a convenient way to get around.

In a statement today, Uber said it hoped that traffic congestion, parking problems and drink driving incidents might be reduced with the availability of its services in Ipoh during the month.

“Uber’s goal is to provide safe, affordable, reliable transport at the push of a button. This is true not just in the bustling city centre of our nation’s capital, but also in the suburbs and smaller cities which lack a formal public transit infrastructure and which have for decades been underserved by existing transport options.

“We look forward to bringing a safe and reliable transport option to Malaysians everywhere, and are looking forward to launching Ipoh as a pop-up city in February,” it said.

HOW TO USE UBER AS A RIDER

In order to use most aspects of the Services, you must register for and maintain an active personal user Services account (“Account“).

How do I request a ride?

We automatically use GPS and Wi-Fi to set your pickup location. You may also enter an exact address or search for a venue name by tapping the pickup location bar. We also recommend entering your destination in the bar underneath the pickup address so your driver has it once you get in the vehicle.

Select from the available vehicle options by using the slider at the bottom of the map. Tapping on any of the icons will display rates for that option.

Once you’ve set your location and vehicle option, tap “Set Pickup Location” to request your ride.

Uber twist

PETALING JAYA: The cabbies’ battle against Uber has taken a new twist – Khazanah Nasional Berhad has invested indirectly in the San Francisco-based technology startup since last year.

Khazanah’s director (managing director’s office) Mohd Raslan Md Sharif has confirmed with theSun that the state-owned investment arm has taken an indirect interest in Uber Technologies Inc via global growth equity investment General Atlantic LLC.

However, the amount invested by Khazanah is not known. Uber is currently valued at around US$51 billion (RM217.85 billion).

Klang Valley Taxi Drivers Action Committee (JKBPTLK) chairman Zailani Isa Usuludin said Khazanah’s investment confirmed his suspicion of a secret deal behind Uber’s presence in the country.

“Now I can understand why the Finance Ministry has endorsed Uber’s illegal ‘teksi sapu’ services,” he said, in reference to Finance Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah positive comments on Uber.

Last month, Mohd Irwan had stated that Uber’s business would allow low-wage earners to supplement their income, which is in line with the government’s vision for a high-income economy.

Said Zailani: “We often wondered if there is an invisible hand behind Uber’s progress in Malaysia as there’s no action at all to halt the availability of Uber and GrabCar apps.”

He also accused the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) of aiding Uber’s growth.

“We have appealed to MCMC and other agencies to shut down the Uber app and its services. It all proved futile,” he said, adding that a court injunction would be filed against MCMC and Uber by the end of the month.
