Can you bring bak kwa in from Malaysia? AVA, ICA issue advisory on food import ahead of CNY http://str.sg/ZVeq

…
SINGAPORE – Planning to buy bak kwa from Malaysia for Chinese New Year?
Think twice – you may be breaking the law.
The barbecued sweet meat is on the list of items travellers are barred from bringing into Singapore.
Bak kwa is considered a pork product and can be imported only from approved regions including Australia, Japan, United States and a number of European countries.
Pork from Malaysia, and all other South-east Asian countries, is not allowed even for personal consumption.
…
Other goodies such as love letters and pineapple tarts are allowed, but limited to 5kg, or $100 per person, according to food import guidelines.
In general, travellers are allowed to bring in a maximum of 5kg or 5 litres of processed food products, and the total value of these products cannot exceed $100 per person.
Processed food includes all food that are not meat products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, and eggs.
…
The restrictions are for health and safety reasons, AVA said.

KTM tickets sold out
KUALA LUMPUR: Train tickets from here to Penang, Kedah and Perlis for Feb 6 were sold out within an hour after sales commenced, leaving many frustrated with KTM Bhd (KTMB).
It is the day before the eve of Chinese New Year, a national holiday on Feb 8 and 9, except for Kelantan and Terengganu, which only observes the first day. Most Chinese would want to be home for the traditional reunion dinner on the eve.
…
A notice at the information counter said north-bound tickets from JB Sentral to Ipoh, Butterworth and Hat Yai for Feb 6 were also sold out.
It is understood that some queued up as early as 6.30am just to secure their tickets under KTMB’s system of selling tickets not more than 30 days in advance, including the travel date. For example, tickets for Feb 7, 8 and 9 will only be available on Jan 9, 10 and 11 respectively.

Tickets for Malaysia-bound buses during Chinese New Year in high demand
CNY bus tickets to M’sia 3x normal price, but demand still high http://tdy.sg/1OzNNIc @ChannelNewsAsia

…
SINGAPORE — Chinese New Year is about a month away and tickets for Malaysia-bound buses are already in high demand, despite the threefold increase in prices.
The Express and Excursion Bus Association today (Jan 2) said its 12 express bus operators have raised fares from between S$30 and S$50, to between S$90 and S$150.
Tickets for Feb 5, which is the Friday before the long Chinese New Year weekend, are already sold out, the association added. Meanwhile, 80 per cent of the tickets for Feb 6 have been sold.
The 12 operators have already added additional daily trips, from 70 on normal days to a total of 300 during the Chinese New Year period.
…
Besides buses, commuters are also considering taking the train from Singapore to Johor. Ticketing staff at Woodlands Train Checkpoint said they have received queries about tickets during the Chinese New Year period.
Tickets go on sale only one month before the travel date.
According to Malaysian media, to alleviate the current congestion at the Causeway, the frequency of train services will be increased from 14 to 22 daily from Jan 17. However, it is unknown whether more adjustments will be made during the Chinese New Year period. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
