Singapore couple says adoption process done, no ill intention in ‘kidnap’ girl case

JOHOR BARU: The Singaporean couple involved in the controversial adoption of three-year-old girl, Angie Tiong, clarified that they only wanted to give her “a good and complete home.”

Cannie Ong, in her forties, said she was shocked to read newspaper reports about the girl’s father lodging a police report claiming that the girl had been kidnapped.

“Before adopting her, we knew she came from a broken home and of her father’s situation, so we felt a greater urge to take her in.

“The legal adoption process in Malaysia has been done and we did not have any ill intentions.

“We only wanted to give her a wholesome and good environment to grow up in,” Ong told a press conference here on Tuesday.

Ong said she and her Malaysian husband, who holds a Singapore PR, have a son and had yearned for a daughter.

This led them to ask around to adopt a girl and eventually through a friend’s recommendation, met a middle man who introduced them to Angie in September last year.

JB police say ‘kidnapping’ of toddler was a misunderstanding

The case of a two-year-old toddler going missing is all a misunderstanding, according to the Johor police, Malaysia’s New Straits Times reported yesterday.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said Angie Tiong is safe and is under the care of the Johor Baru Welfare office while police continue their investigation.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the father was unable to take care of the child, so a Good Samaritan offered to help,” he said.

Angie was reported missing on Dec 10, a month after her father last saw her at a budget hotel in Taman Pelangi. Police had earlier arrested three suspects in relation to the case.

Mr Wan Ahmad said the toddler had been surrendered by a couple, who are Malaysians but are Permanent Residents of Singapore, on Sunday night.

“When the matter caught media attention, the couple came forward and handed Angie to police,” he said.

“The toddler was just handed over to us last night,” he said, adding that more will be revealed when investigations are completed.

Angie, who now sports a crew cut, was all smiles in a recent photograph taken at a playground.

Missing JB toddler ‘adopted by Singapore couple’

JOHOR BARU • A two-year-old girl who went missing for weeks after an outing with her father has been reportedly “adopted” by a couple in Singapore, after the incident sparked a frantic search in Malaysia for the child.

Citing a source, China Press reported that the toddler – who is said to have been abandoned by her Vietnamese mother – has been “adopted” by a childless married couple in Singapore.

The paperwork was done by a lawyer in Johor Baru appointed by the couple’s middleman, said the source, adding that the adoption process was done according to Singapore laws and Angie’s father signed over the custody of the girl to the couple.

It is believed that the couple has never seen Angie’s father. The source said he is not sure if money was given to him.

Angie’s uncle Luo Jie Cheng, 49, told reporters that the couple had promised to take the child to the Johor Police Headquarters on Thursday, after reading news about her disappearance.

But the couple did not appear and instead got their lawyer to handle the case, according to Mr Luo, who waited for hours at the police station with his wife. They probably backed out due to the media attention, he added.

It is not clear if Angie is in Malaysia or Singapore now, but she is said to be staying with relatives of her “adopted parents”, the China Press reported.

JOHOR BARU – The family of a Malaysian toddler, who is suspected to have been sold by her father, waited for her at a police station for hours on Thursday (Dec 31) but the reunion they hoped for never happened.

Two-year-old Angie Tiong was reportedly “adopted” by a childless couple from Singapore, Malaysian newspaper China Press wrote on Thursday.

Angie’s aunt Tiong Mei Ling, 36, a hawker stall helper in Singapore, and uncle Luo Jie Cheng, 49, a furniture worker, said they will ask the Singaporean couple to return the girl.

Johor police said that they have questioned the couple from Singapore and will release more details when the investigation is complete.

The police said Angie will be returned to Johor Baru, Wanbao said.

Citing a source, China Press reported that the adoption was done through a middleman who got a lawyer in Johor Baru to do the paperwork. It is believed that the couple has never seen Angie’s biological father.

When the Johor lawyer saw the media reports about the missing girl, he contacted the source to explain that there has been a misunderstanding.

The source said the biological father signed documents agreeing to transfer custody of the toddler to the couple, but he is not sure if money was given to the father.

Father in Malaysia claims only realised daughter ‘kidnapped’ one month after she disappeared

JOHOR BARU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – A man in Malaysia has lodged a police report a month after his daughter went missing, claiming he only realised she had been kidnapped after she did not return from a walk she had taken with his friend.

In his report lodged on Dec 10, the man said a male friend had taken the two-year-old named Angie Tiong for a walk from a budget hotel in Jalan Maju at Johor’s Taman Pelangi on Nov 11. Before they left for the walk, he said the friend had given him a “few thousand ringgit”.

But according to the girls’ relatives who had been taking care of her, Angie’s father took her away from them on Nov 9, claiming that he was taking her out to play. But when he did not return the girl, they filed a police report early this month, the Oriental Daily reported.

Angie’s caregivers said they suspect the father, who has a long history of drug abuse, has sold off the girl as he was inconsistent in describing her disappearance when questioned by the relatives.

Police have now arrested three suspects – a cook, a labourer and an unemployed man – all aged between 30 and 33 years, in their investigation into the “kidnapping” case and are on the lookout for more.

Asked if the father was one of those arrested, district police officer for Johor Baru South Assistant Commissioner Sulaiman Salleh said: “He was investigated and remanded but later released. He (the father) is not among those arrested.

“He (the father) only realised that he was cheated after a month because his daughter was still missing and the kidnapper, whom he befriended that very day, could not be reached until today,” he said when contacted.
