KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 — A deputy minister’s suggestion that Malaysians take on two jobs to cover rising costs illustrates the disconnect between Putrajaya and the public’s misery, said Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin today.
The Wanita PKR chief also rubbished Datuk Ahmad Maslan’s boast about holding three “jobs”, noting that this was out of privilege rather than an actual necessity to survive.
Zuraida then cited the case of one “Atan”, whom she said worked three actual jobs as lorry driver, burger stall operator and vegetable farmer — all to earn just RM2,000 a month, far less than the RM16,000 Ahmad makes as MP and RM18,168 as deputy minister.
Zuraida pointed out that Ahmad’s income may be more as it was not publicly known how much he earns as Umno information chief or other posts he holds.
“Ahmad Maslan and the BN government are disconnected from the suffering of the people. Only Ahmad Maslan is capable of making blunder after blunder making him the butt of jokes,” she said in a statement today.
“To sum up, Ahmad Maslan’s logic is questionable and he appears to be disorientated. It is very embarrassing for Malaysia to have the likes of Ahmad Maslan as part of the country’s leadership when the objective is to achieve a developed nation status by 2020.

After ‘2 jobs’ furore, Kit Siang tells Cabinet to stop acting like comedians
Putrajaya should revise the Budget 2016 and draw up a special economic blueprint to resolve the issue of high living costs, instead of telling people to take up two jobs, Lim Kit Siang said today.
The DAP parliamentary leader said at the rate the Cabinet was acting, they would very soon become comedians.
“Instead of ministers and deputy ministers doubling up as comedians, the government should come out with an economic blueprint to increase the people’s productivity and income, which is what Najib’s Budget 2016 had dismally failed to do,” said Lim in a statement.
“Datuk Seri Najib Razak should take the opportunity of a special parliamentary session at the end of January to present a revised budget as well as a special economic blueprint for Malaysians to face to the hard and harsh new year.”
Lim was responding to International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan who said the government encouraged people hold down two jobs to cope with higher cost of living.

Perak Boleh: Wow, what a way to ‘cari makan’. First, get a position in Umno, then get elected as an MP and be appointed a deputy minister with two big fat salaries doing nothing productive.
I have to wake up at 6am every morning to cage up my night security dogs, sweep the garden and do my daily marketing at the pasar. Then cook breakfast, send some food stuff to my aging aunty’s house and then onwards to my office desk.
At 5pm when my office work is over, I go back home to prepare and cook dinner, wash up the dinner plates and cooking pots, etc, wipe the floor and mop it every two days. And then feed and release the dogs and it’s already 9pm.
I also have to wipe all the house windows every weekend and heck, I just got only one salary, which has remained stagnant for the last 11 months.

Odysseus: Ahmad Maslan shows he cannot even comprehend the issue he is trying to tackle. It’s about the escalating cost of living. He is advising the common folks to take up more than one job to weather the cost of living issue.
But it is because the salary for a single job is too low. If one is already earning a lot from a single job, he doesn’t need to have the second or third job. So, why must he boast about his three jobs?
He should tell us how much he makes out of these three jobs.
Basically: Ahmad Maslan, you have to be a MP to be a minister, at least that’s the proper way and not be appointed minister through the backdoor. So that’s not two jobs.
And your party post is not a job, at least I do not believe party posts are salaried, nor should it be.
Are you saying Umno pays you to be information chief? If that is the case, I would think many would fight for your party post. Our deputy minister seems not to have grey matter between his ears.

Gopal Kishnam said Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan’s suggestion was not constructive, and urged the government to come up with different approaches to address the issue for every worker in the country, whether private or public sector employees.
“A similar idea was brought up a few years ago. Thus, the MTUC urges the government to withdraw such recommendation and should discourage citizens of this country from holding down two jobs,” the union said following the deputy international trade and industry minister’s statement.

Gopal Kishnam said research also had proven that having two jobs would lead to negative impact in terms of health and productivity of the workers.
“They won’t have quality time with their family, and if this happened, we worry that more social problem will be occurred in the long-run.”
“If the government continues to promote the two jobs scheme, it will affect the overall productivity of the organisation they are working for, and the nation at large,” he said.
He said MTUC would bring the matter to the Human Resources Ministry and the Prime Minister in the near future to find ways to increase wages of workers in the country.
“We hope that the employers’ organisation will also say no to this kind of recommendation.”

“If you have a day job, you can run an online business at night and during weekends as long as your performance is not affected; it can increase income,” the deputy international trade and industry minister added.
He also pointed out that rural folk are used to working two jobs, saying that they farm in the morning and run a grocery shop in the evening, or tap rubber in the morning and farm in the evening, or cut grass in the morning and build houses in the evening.
“#2kerja There are rules that need to be followed for those who have fixed jobs, so follow them lah. But for those who work for themselves, there’s no issue,” said Ahmad.

The government encourages those in the low-income group to work two jobs, as it is one way to cope with the rising cost of living, Astro Awani report.
The portal reported Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan as saying that holding down two jobs was not uncommon as it was done by many around the world.
“I think it’s not wrong (to have two jobs) in Malaysia, though we have regulations, but it is still one way to address the rising cost of living.
“They can work during office hours (from 8am to 5pm) and still run their online business… As long as they have enough sleep and come to work. They can run their businesses on weekends,” Ahmad was quoted as saying.
Civil servants, too, could run online businesses but the main commitment should be their day job, the portal reported.
Ahmad said the government supported such efforts through online portals eUsahawan and eRezeki.
