SINGAPORE: For sending threatening messages to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Facebook and assaulting two police officers who tried to arrest him, Tan Yeong Hong will spend 15 months behind bars.
The 33-year-old Singaporean, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, became frustrated when he attended a Meet the People’s Session in PM Lee’s Ang Mo Kio constituency in June this year, only to find that the PM would not be there.
Tan then wrote four threatening messages to Mr Lee: “Eh, you challenged me to visit your MPS but you are not here. I will find and stage an attack on you when I have information on your public appearances. You know who I am.” Tan also included his NRIC number and handphone number on the messages.
When police arrested him near his home at Hougang Avenue 1, a hostile Tan punched a policeman on his shoulder and elbowed another in the face, but was eventually subdued and placed under arrest.
A search of Tan’s home revealed a stash of weapons including a hammer, two choppers and several knives. Police also found a list of the Prime Minister’s upcoming appearances.
…
In sentencing Tan, District Judge Mathew Joseph said Tan’s “clear diagnosis” of paranoid schizophrenia and the fact that he poses a high risk to people around him need to be dealt with before he is released back into the community. The sentence of 15 months’ jail strikes a balance between deterrence and rehabilitation, the judge said.

In the messages, Tan said: “Eh, You challenged me to visit your MPS but you are not here. I will find and stage an Attack on you when I have information on your Public Appearances. You know who I am”. Tan also included his NRIC number and handphone number in the messages.
Tan faced another two charges of voluntarily causing hurt to two public servants, punching one policeman on the shoulder and elbowing another in the face.
Tan, who has since been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, admitted he sent the threatening messages but had no intention of carrying the threats out.
District Judge Mathew Joseph convicted Tan on the three counts – one of criminal intimidation and two of causing hurt to public servants – but adjourned Tan’s sentencing to a later date, to allow for Tan to engage counsel.
