From 1 January 2016, Nasi lemak and bee hun can’t be wrapped with old newspaper any longer.

Any food seller who uses old newspaper and other printed paper will kena a fine.

I hope the Malay lady running her stall on the main road in our area won’t raise the price of her food!

Newspaper wrappers ok so long as no direct contact with food: M’sian ministry

KUALA LUMPUR — The Health Ministry clarified today (Dec 24) that food operators are allowed to use newspapers to wrap up their food as long as it does they line the packages with another layer first.

Its director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said newspapers can only be used as a second layer to pack prepared food and packing materials such as plastic sheets or banana leaves should be used as the first layer to cover the food completely to avoid contamination.

“Packaging of ready-to-eat food with newspaper as the second layer has to be handled in a way to avoid ink contamination from the newspaper to the food.

“For example, contamination can happen when the food handler touches the newspaper first and then the food,” he said in a statement.

Mixed response to M’sia’s proposed ban on printed paper food wrappers

GEORGE TOWN — Food stall operators as well as consumers here are having mixed feelings about the likelihood of a ban being imposed on printed paper used for packing food.

The talk that the Health Ministry is mulling over the question whether to impose a nationwide ban on usage of printed paper to wrap cooked food has gotten food handlers as well as customers thinking about the issue.

Some of the food handlers hope that the government would give them a grace period to allow transition to non-printed papers if it ever decides to impose the new rule on food packing.

Restaurant owner Abdul Rahman Habib, 51, whose outlet has been using printed papers to wrap food for many years now, hopes that eatery outlets will be given ample time to adjust to any new ruling issued by the Health Ministry.

Ms Nor Azlina Yahaya said the cost of doing food business would rise if traders were forced to use unprinted brown papers to wrap food items.

“It (the brown papers) is not cheap. Although I would prefer to use brown papers as they are cleaner, it would also mean that I would have to increase the price I am charging my customers now,” she said.

Customers interviewed by Malay Mail agreed that a ban ought to be imposed on printed wrappers.

By THARANYA ARUMUGAM – 8 December 2015 @ 11:45 AM
KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will deliberate over the issue of using printed materials to pack food items in a bid to safeguard food safety at a national level.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the ministry had always advocated against the usage of printed materials, including newspapers to wrap food.
“This is in our National Food Safety policy and the ministry via its Food Safety and Quality division had been continuously encouraging (small-time traders and the public at large) to refrain from using newspapers to pack food items.
“But it has not been enforced in the form of a ban since not many people today use newspapers in food wrapping.

He was commenting on the Perlis state government’s move to take legal action against any food operator who uses printed paper for packing food from Jan 1 next year.
