The judges did not know that Miss Charity Maru was born in Myanmar and even if they had, it would not have made a difference.
She’s the second winner in recent years to be born overseas.
Indonesia-born Karisa Sukamto, who won Miss World Singapore 2012, became a Singapore citizen just before she joined the local pageant.
Miss World Singapore organiser Raymund Ooi told TNP that as only Singapore citizens are allowed to join the competition, that was what the judges were told: that all the finalists are Singaporean.
He said: “My brief to the judges is that I’m looking for the best person to represent Singapore.
“The score for the girls was made up of three parts, 40 per cent for compassion, 30 per cent for beauty and 30 per cent for intelligence.
“The judges picked the finalist they felt scored the best in these three areas.”

[States Times] Miss World Singapore want to introduce “her people” to the world http://bit.ly/1kyoPBK #SGnews
Miss World Singapore want to introduce “her people” to the world
Newly-crowned Miss World Singapore Charity Maru wants to introduce “her people” to the world. No, and her people are not Singaporeans. Charity, whose full name is Lu Lu Seng, wants to introduce the Kachin people from North Myanmar to the world.
“One of my goals I set for myself should I win Miss World Singapore was to introduce my people to the world.
I believe that I am the first Kachin to take part in the Miss World Pageant.
Also, now that I am Singaporean, I want to represent Singapore well at the finals by showing that charity, which is a big component of Miss World, should be a lifestyle choice instead of a one-off thing.”

Miss Charity Maru, also known as Charity Lu Lu Seng, finally tasted victory on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old freelance translator beat 13 other contestants to be crowned Miss World Singapore 2015 at the One Farrer Hotel & Spa.
But her joy was quickly tainted by criticism online that she is not the best person to represent Singapore at the international finals on Dec 19 in China.
Miss Maru is a relatively new citizen, getting her pink IC only in 2007.
