Malaysian rapper and film-maker Namewee has been asked to sign a declaration not to say anything which could offend the Malaysian and Chinese governments, ahead of his concert tonight in Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports.
“With all due respect, I, Wee Meng Chee, hereby promise and declares (sic) that I will not make any comments or say anything about the Malaysian Government or Chinese Government during my visit to Hong Kong starting from 19/10/2005 to 22/10/2005,” reads a notice posted by the controversial rapper on his Facebook, questioning the need for such an undertaking.
But Namewee’s Taiwanese manager Henry Lau Tao-hung told SCMP that it was because people were nervous about what the singer would say.
“We are not suppressing (Wee’s) freedom of speech, but we are cooperating with many units in Hong Kong and everyone feels sensitive and nervous (about his vocalness).”
