Again, Azalina denies Putrajaya bought spyware
The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said such allegations were unsubstantiated and had already been answered in Parliament.
“I have provided a written reply to the question, by explaining that the Prime Minister’s Office had never procured such software.
“Hence once again I stress that no such procurement was made by the Prime Minister’s Office,” she said in a statement.
Yesterday, blogger Keith Rozario uploaded on his website keithrozario.com proof of purchase between Shah Alam-based company Miliserv Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd and Hacking Team in September 2013 and July 2014.
Miliserv paid the Milan-based firm £38,500 (RM170,270) and £210,000 (RM899,157) for the software.
Rozario said this proved Putrajaya was involved in the purchase through Miliserv, a 100% Bumiputera firm registered under the Finance Ministry.
Azalina in her statement added that any further explanation should be obtained from the agency involved, saying it was beyond her jurisdiction.
“I would like to explain here about the allegations that another government agency acquired the spyware.
“It is appropriate that the explanation be obtained from the agency involved if there is one, as it is not right for me to speak on behalf of other agencies beyond my jurisdiction,” she said.

The Government has denied buying spyware from hacking team, they really should have checked with me before issuing the statement.

On the 23rd of November 2015, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said denied that the Malaysian government had procured spyware from hacking team. In a formal response (in Parliament!!), the Minister simply stated “For your information, no such device was purchased by the Prime Minister’s Department”.
For YOUR information, dear Minister, I don’t like being lied to, and oh look there’s a flying pig by the window.Next time ask your PR guys to call me before you go setting your pants on fire.
Ok folks, here’s a step-by-step on why we can trust the hacking team leak, why there’s conclusive proof Malaysia bought this spyware, and why we should be worried about the manner in which it is being used. So let’s go.First off, can we trust the Hacking Team revelations?
Yes, we can.
Phineas Fisher, the hacker responsible for leaking the data, didn’t just release e-mail trails, but also included brochures, invoices and the secret 0-day exploits (pronounced ZERO-DAY-EXPLOITS) in a giant 500GB download. Those 0-days are ‘proprietary’ hacking team exploits, and it’s what made their infamous RCS software possible.
…
All that’s nice Mr. Tech Evangelist, but do you have any real evidence?
Yes indeed I do.
…
I’ve linked two TT slips detailing 2 large payments to Hacking Team from a company called Miliserv Technologies Sdn. Bhd., if the Government hasn’t procured spyware from Hacking Team, I strongly advise the Minister to investigate this local Malaysian company for making huge payments to an enemy of the internet.
TT-SLIP-No1 (38,500 EUR)
TT-SLIP-No2 (210,00 EUR–pardon the fuzziness, I had to remove some personal information of the company director).
…
Conclusion
Listen, I believe the police have a right to procure the spyware, and quite frankly at around 200,000 EURO, it’s basically pocket change for the Government.
But the evidence suggest that we’re not using it to catch criminals, but rather to spy on politicians.
And for a MINISTER, to straight up deny it in Parliament, is expected (if I’m being honest) and suggest there’s a lot more to hide. The manner of the denial, without even offering any explanation into the purchases makes it even more frustrating.

The plot thickens: Malaysia government’s extensive contact with Hacking Team
The full trove of documents from Italy’s commercial spyware provider Hacking Team is now online. From the invoices sent by the Hacking Team to Miliserv Technologies, the Shah Alam based entity that seem to be the Putrajaya’s channel, there was large investment in surveillance technology in 2013. There were concerns from civil society groups and overseas observers about the Malaysian government’s repressive stance during that period, an election year.
… According to Wikileaks, Hacking Team visited Malaysia in December 2011 and then for a longer period in March 2013.
Hacking Team had a good reason to visit Malaysia, given that Malaysia has spent around 1.86 million Euros on their catalogue and sits as one of their top 10 customers.

…
A preliminary analysis of the invoices and bills between the Malaysian government and the Hacking Team suggest a lengthy working relationship. Without more information, this is but a limited perspective into Malaysia’s connections with one spyware company, from the side of the spyware company. The revenue data that Hacking Team collected seems to confirm that Malaysia has so far been a good customer.

Looking at the invoices issued, the contact between the Hacking Team and agencies in the Malaysian government in 2013 seemed to have expanded from prior years. In particular, under the customer histories record of the Hacking Team, the PMO, which hitherto had not been a user of their products, appeared on the books. Also unlike the other agencies, there were no signs that the PMO paid maintenance fees in 2014 and 2015.

This company sells spy tools to evil governments
This is a still from a commercial for Hacking Team, which sells spy tools to oppressive governments.
We know dictatorships spy on innocent people. And now we know where they buy their tools — from a tiny Italian company in Milan.
It’s called Hacking Team. And the world knows about it, because Hacking Team has been hacked.
On Sunday, a massive load of stolen documents were uploaded to the Internet. It revealed contracts, invoices and internal presentations of Hacking Team. And it offered a glimpse into a shadowy world of selling high-powered cyber weapons — even to genocidal maniacs.
CNNMoney could not verify the authenticity of these documents. However, specific details in several separate documents form a consistent picture of Hacking Team’s business dealings.
Hacking Team offers consulting on computer security, and its professional hackers build powerful tools. They can spy on emails, text messages and more.
The dark side? Various human rights groups — such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch — have worried that Hacking Team’s tools will get into the wrong hands, helping governments arrest journalists and protestors to suppress free speech.
In the past, Hacking Team has denied helping “repressive regimes.”
But now there are documents that show the opposite.
One contract exposed in the data breach shows that Ethiopia paid Hacking Team $1 million for spy tools in 2012. Hacking Team got paid €58,000 to provide spy tools to the Egyptian government in early 2012. Both contracts were for “Remote Control System,” a powerful spying software.
Then there’s Sudan, whose government has engaged in a genocide that killed 400,000, and whose president, Omar al Bashir, faces international criminal charges for mass murder and rape.
Stolen documents show that in March, the United Nations investigated whether Hacking Team sold equipment to Sudan. Hacking Team starkly denied then doing business with Sudan. But it actually got paid $960,000 to provide spy tools in 2012, according to leaked contracts.
“These are very powerful tools that are being sold to basically anyone with a checkbook,” said American Civil Liberties Union principle technologist Christopher Soghoian, who has closely studied the exposed contracts.
The documents show that Hacking Team sells spy tools to many of the countries that rank worst in the World Press Freedom Index, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam.

Hacking Team hacked, attackers claim 400GB in dumped data
Firm made famous for helping governments spy on their citizens left exposed
On Sunday, while most of Twitter was watching the Women’s World Cup – an amazing game from start to finish – one of the world’s most notorious security firms was being hacked. Specializing in surveillance technology, Hacking Team is now learning how it feels to have their internal matters exposed to the world, and privacy advocates are enjoying a bit of schadenfreude at their expense. Hacking Team is an Italian company that sells intrusion and surveillance tools to governments and law enforcement agencies. http://www.csoonline.com/article/2943968/data-breach/hacking-team-hacked-attackers-claim-400gb-in-dumped-data.html — Malaysian Insider
