Netizens alarmed over ‘reversing escalator’ in mall
The 2014 incident has for some reason suddenly gone viral and is causing shoppers to worry over safety standards in the country’s shopping malls.
Social media users who viewed the video and shared it online, have raised safety concerns about using escalators in shopping malls in the country.
The Setia Mall management, where the incident occurred, however clarified that the incident happened last year and has since been rectified.
“The video uploaded concerns an incident which occurred on December 21, 2014. No one was seriously injured in the incident and immediate medical attention was arranged,” they said to The Rakyat Post when contacted.
Following the incident, the management had taken the necessary action to prevent it from happening in the future.
“The Department of Occupational Health and Safety has also inspected and re-certified that the escalator is safe for operation.”
Apart from this, a third party was also roped in to do an inspection on the lifts and escalators.

Most reversing escalators go down. You never hear of one reversing up and speeding. This would suggest that the The motor coil open circuited or the power-off relay failed to connect a resistor/short across the coil for electromagnetic braking. With no brake the weight of the live load will go in the direction of gravity. Down.
