Fire at the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) at IOI City Mall: Fire shutters blocked the escape route!

Incident on 17 June 2015

They were all seated when the fire alarm went off but the escape route was blocked by the fire shutters.

GSC has explained that the alarm and shutters were triggered by “a small fire at the air-conditioning handling room and it was quickly extinguished by the technician on duty”.

Patrons at GSC moved out safely during fire

PETALING JAYA: Patrons at the Golden Screen Cinemas at IOI City Mall were not in danger at any time during a minor fire there last week.

In fact everyone was safely evacuated within minutes.

In a statement released yesterday, GSC assured that it would take further precautionary steps to inform the public on the proper evacuation routes in their cinemas whenever the need arose.

During the incident in Putrajaya last Wednesday, the company said cinema-goers were evacuated within 15 minutes after the fire alarm went off at 7.55pm.

GSC clarified that none of the doors in the cinema were locked and instead it was the fire shutters, triggered by the fire evacuation system, that had blocked the route patrons took.

It explained that the alarm and shutter were triggered by “a small fire at the air-conditioning handling room and it was quickly extinguished by the technician on duty”.

“By 8.07pm the fire shutters were opened by the cinema team and all patrons were evacuated by 8.10pm,” it added.

PRESS STATEMENT: SMALL FIRE IN GSC IOI CITY MALL, PUTRAJAYA

Petaling Jaya, June 19 (Friday)

This is reference to the recent media reports with regards to fire incident in our 13-screen GSC IOI City Mall Putrajaya on Wednesday night (June 17).

The fire alarm system and fire shutter (which is part of the fire safety requirement) were triggered  due to a small fire at the Air-Conditioning Handling Unit (AHU) room but this was quickly extinguished by our technician on duty.

The chronology of event is as follows :

Date: June 17,2015

7.55pm  Fire alarm and fire shutter were triggered by the fire evacuation system.

Immediately our dedicated GSC checkpoint staff on duty at the entrance started to assist customers to exit via the emergency door (next to fire shutter) following the fire alarm.

GSC staff was also deployed to the entire cinema premises to ensure that it has been fully vacated.

8.00 pm   GSC technician proceeded to Level 3 Projection Room and quickly extinguished the fire.  The cause of the small fire was from the burnt Variable Speed Drive (VSD – a energy saving device to control the air-conditioning fan speed) at the AHU panel board.

8.07 pm   Cinema team opened the entrance fire shutter to expedite the evacuation process.

8.10pm   All customers were fully evacuated.

8.32pm   Both Bomba and Mall Management teams  conducted their investigation and certified that the cinema is safe to continue operations.

June 18, 2015

Cinema resumed business but Hall 9 remains close due to the damaged AHU.

Ticket refunds exercise for cancelled shows at the cinema ticketing counter.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.

GSC customers were not in any immediate danger at all times and were safely evacuated out of the cinema. Notification was updated onto GSC Facebook page and website by 9.10 pm the same night.
