Stop using race, religion to hide incompetence, Johor sultan tells politicians

The Sultan of Johor has called on all politicians to stop using racist and religious rhetoric to hide their ineptitude, The Star reported today.

Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said politicians should be focused on serving the people, not tearing them apart using sensitive issues.

“I do not want politicians to use race or religion to exploit the sentiments of the people to cover their incompetence,” Sultan Ibrahim said in an exclusive interview with the English-language daily.

He warned that he would personally summon any Johor politician guilty of this to give a piece of his mind, regardless of whether they were in the opposition or the government.

“Please do not waste time creating news headlines for the wrong reasons. Stop racist and religious rhetoric and work for the people.

“I hope the politicians will not sow distrust and suspicions among the people by using such sensitive issues to fan uneasiness and tension. We must remain united to face the economic and political challenges,” he was quoted as saying by the daily.

In interview, Johor Sultan says there is much to learn from Singapore, talks about late son

JOHOR BARU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the ruler of Malaysia’s state of Johor has said there is much to learn from Singapore’s success, while making it clear that he is above politics and does not favour any politician.

During an hour-long exclusive interview with The Star newspaper to wrap up the year, the Johor ruler also spoke emotionally on an array of issues, including his late son Tunku Laksamana Tunku Abdul Jalil – who passed away on Dec 5 after being diagnosed with stage-four liver cancer…

The Star: Tuanku, we wish to express our condolences on the recent demise of His Highness Tunku Laksamana Tunku Abdul Jalil. How has the family coped with the event of the past weeks, if we may ask?

Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar: This has been a roller-coaster year for the family and me. The high points have been the coronation in March this year when I became the state’s fifth Sultan in the history of modern Johor. The last time a coronation ceremony took place was 55 years ago.

I also conferred the new title of Permaisuri Johor on my consort Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah at the coronation ceremony, which was another historic occasion.

In October last year, my eldest son, the Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, ended his bachelorhood when he married Che’ Puan Khaleeda Bustamam.

But all these events took place against the backdrop of the difficulties the family was going through as we joined Tunku Jalil in his fight against his illness.

He was diagnosed while he was on a holiday with us in the United Kingdom in August last year. He was truly a fighter and a man of steel. While it was painful for him during the medical treatment, it was equally painful for us.

We are, after all, ordinary human beings too. I am a father like other parents in Johor. It crushed my heart each time I saw my son suffer, especially when I knew that he was dying. I had to be strong for him until the end.

But as my wife penned in a heartfelt letter which she has shared with Malaysians, sometimes things don’t go as we plan. No matter how painful, one needs to accept reality with an open heart.

I have kept all the text messages that he had sent to me. These are precious memories, which are very important to my family and me.

But we must accept fate and destiny. Allah has His reasons. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Malaysians, especially Johoreans, from all walks of life, races and religions who opened up their hearts in pouring out their support for my son.

I truly wish to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I am deeply touched.

Even until this day, there are people still visiting the royal mausoleum to pay their last respects.

I find it hard to understand the rationale or irrationality of any Malaysian leader who wants Malaysia to quarrel with Singapore. It’s what I called crooked thinking.

There is so much we can learn from Singapore. They have done well, let’s be honest here. We don’t have to go on expensive study trips to Europe or the United States – just go across the Causeway to Singapore, they have done so many things that are correct and efficient.

Johor sultan weighs in on Jakim’s RM1 billion budget, Najib and vape ban

Embedded image permalink

The sultan of Johor said he does not understand why the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) needs nearly RM1 billion a year in allocations, just one month after a deputy minister said the budget is not enough for the federal religious agency.

In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Star, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said he wanted Jakim to show him how they spent the money during the next Conference of Rulers.

“I am curious to know – if it is true – why do they need a RM1 billion budget? Does it include allocations to all the states?

“During my next Conference of Rulers, I want them to show me their breakdown for expenses. I want to know if they are financing our religious schools here,” the Johor ruler was quoted as saying.

Sultan Ibrahim affirmed the rulers’ positions, and said Jakim’s powers were limited to advising or proposing guidelines to them.

He said it was up to the sultans to accept Jakim’s advice, adding that the federal religious department had no right to interfere in the state.

Sultan Ibrahim also told The Star that he believed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should be given a chance, and that the everyone must “move on”.

He said every prime minister had committed mistakes, and Najib “is the prime minister whether you like it or not”.

“Every one of us makes mistakes but we must be prepared to learn from them, make amends and do what is right. Right what is wrong.”

Sultan Ibrahim said he ordered a ban on vape sales because he was fed up with the state authorities dithering over the issue.

He said vaping was a health issue and that the sight of “women in headscarves and even children puffing away” made him realise it was the beginning of a disaster.

He hit out at “mindless politicians” who turned vaping into politics and race, and questioned whether they actually cared about the health of the people.

“They were dragging their feet and some politicians were making silly remarks such as vaping should not be banned because a million votes would be lost and Bumiputera interest would be affected.”

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob has defended vaping, saying that any restrictions would only kill the Malay-dominated industry.

But Sultan Ibrahim said those defending vaping were doing it from a business standpoint and ignoring its consequences on health. – December 27, 2015.

For Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, his state comes before Malaysia and therefore is unperturbed about the impact of his messages on social media.

“I am going to be the future Sultan of this state and my main responsibility goes towards the people of Johor. Malaysia is important to me, but Johor and JDT (state football team) will always come first.

“People deserve to know, that the mess we have in the country right now, should in no way be associated to the Johor royal family.

“Over the years, we’ve always been strong and independent as well as resourceful,” he said in an interview with sports publication Fourth Official, which was reproduced on the Southern Tigers Facebook page.

Tunku Ismail also pointed out that Johor joined the Federation of Malaya after both parties agreed to several basic terms.

“And if any one of those terms are breached, we have every right to secede from this country.

“You can accuse me of instigating state-based sentiments, but to me, I’m merely doing my duty to the people of Johor, and reminding them of the history and heritage behind this great land,” said the crown prince, who apart from his father, cited Fidel Castro as his biggest idol.

Castro, he added, might have been a Communist, but the former Cuban leader earned the prince’s respect because he stood for the principles he believed in.

Those studying abroad are struggling with rising living costs as the ringgit continues to plummet against major currencies.

As of Oct 1, RM1 is worth just US$0.23 and £0.15.

So when Johor queen Raja Zarith Sofiah Idris wanted to know how she could ease Malaysian students’ financial burden by reaching out to the public on Facebook, people gave their ideas.

Now, the Zarith Sofiah’s Initiative for Educational Financial Assistance is providing US$500 (about S$712) or £500 (about S$1,079) to 100 Malaysian students studying in the United States and the UK.

Johor Sultan issues warning to politicians

JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor gave a sound warning to all politicians, reminding them not to intervene in palace affairs or make statements that are linked to the palace.

Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar said he wanted to give the advice to all politicians in view of some of the recent statements made by certain people that made them (those making the statements) sound arrogant.

“This is a warning to all politicians and among them, the Kempas assemblyman.

“There are even those who said they want to whack my son. Are these the leaders that we should respect?” he said in a speech after attending Friday prayers here today.

Kempas assemblyman Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Tengku Hamid Jumat reportedly said a foreign billionaire had signed a memorandum of understanding with a member of a royal family to provide security services in Iskandar Malaysia.

Johor prince: I support leaders with integrity, not political parties

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim declared today that his loyalty lies solely with his father, the Sultan, and with leaders who serve the public with integrity, transparency and respect.

“Never once attempt to give counsel to His Majesty for personal interests. When I give counsel, it comes from an honest place because I do not have personal interests,” he added.

The prince went on to declare that his love for his father will remain unwavering.

He added that his post was not meant to single out any specific individual or to complicate matters but was merely for him to express his loyalty to the Sultan and the Johor people.

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz has accepted the olive branch from Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

The Umno politician also extended his birthday wishes to the prince, who turned 31 on Tuesday.

“Just like him, I just said what I thought and if I caused any grief, I am sorry, there’s nothing personal.

“This is a good month, Ramadan, and he just celebrated his birthday, so happy fasting. And I wish him a happy life with his family. Maaf zahir dan batin,” he told Malaysiakini today.

Johor crown prince wants ceasefire

Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has urged the press to stop pitting him against Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz and Putrajaya.

Tunku Ismail said the matter ought to be put to rest because it will not yield any result, as he has put forth his views and that the ceasefire was also out of respect for the month of Ramadan.

“Honestly, I too am bored of this issue,” he said.

“But it will be more interesting if a boxing match between Nazri and myself is organised and the proceeds are donated to charity.

“I AM ONLY JOKING,” Tunku Ismail posted on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page last night. The emphasis in capital letters is his.

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ) on Nazri

(1) “You (Nazri) only revealed how low you are. You are a minister, and you should be educated and speak courteously. But you revealed that you are not entitled to be a minister.

“I was surprised at how foolish you are. With Johor being one of your (Umno’s) strongest states and here you are touching on something that is very sensitive to Johor.

“To me, you are either very over-confident or it is empty up here,” he added pointing to his temple, indicating that Nazri might not be the sharpest tool in the shed.

(2) The prince also rebutted Nazri’s argument that the difference between the duo is that one is a person elected by the people while the other is not.

“If I don’t have the right to talk, then I am a puppet and not the crown prince of Johor. As the crown prince and one of the leaders in this state, I have to speak on behalf of my people on what I think is right because, at the end of the day, my only responsibility is to serve them.

“So whatever he wants to say – that is his opinion. He is not a very bright fellow, to be honest,” Tunku Ismail said.

“I have read one statement by him where he said people like to take interest in him (Nazri) because ‘I am like a Hollywood star, I am rich, powerful and good looking’.

“Rich, yes. Powerful, maybe… Good looking, no. You can quote me on that, I really don’t mind.

“This just shows the arrogance that you have. Empty barrel makes the most noise – that’s what my grandfather used to say,” he added.

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz is glad that Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim does not find him good- looking.

“First of all I am glad he said that. Otherwise, I would have to question his sexuality.

“If a man says another man is good-looking, then we have to question his sexuality, I don’t want to question his sexuality,” he told Malaysiakini today.

It’s my duty to speak for Johoreans, says prince

Malaysiakini met Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim at the swanky Thistle Hotel in the state capital on Monday to find out what spurred him to put up the FB post.

Despite the public adulation, the prince was not carried away and remained modest and humble, much like his attire – a black T-shirt and track bottoms – during the exclusive interview.

He believes Malaysians gravitated towards his remarks not because of him but rather, for the idea that it represented.

“It is the idea of standing up for what is right. I did not offend anybody; I was merely giving my opinion and view on the role, task and responsibility of a leader because the rakyat chose you.

“And you have to understand that the role of a politician is to serve the people,” he said.

“There is no point in being a leader if you cannot listen to the people, to carry out your duties and sacrifice for them.

“At the end of the day, we are here for one purpose; I am born as who I am to serve them. And as long as I have that in my head as my main priority, then I think I am on the right track.

“There is no point in me being born as… the crown prince, if I want to sit back and be a puppet,” said Tunku Ismail.

“God has always blessed me and my family with ‘rezeki’ (fortune),” said the prince who celebrated his 31st birthday yesterday and received a private jet as a gift from his father.

“We can live outside and have nothing to worry about. We can spend six to eight months in London enjoying our lives without having to care what happens to Johor.

“But we are here because we love our people, we love our state, our history and our main priority is the well-being of the people of Johor,” added Tunku Ismail who is among the 50 richest individuals in Malaysia.

I would like to express my sincerest appreciation and thanks for all the wishes on the event of my birthday.

I have decided, after receiving advice and views of my father HRH The Sultan, to donate cattle to all the districts for breaking fast, and also to contribute to the orphans and the less fortunate around Johor. Happy fasting to all muslims.

TMJ warns of cowardly leaders |

Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has warned that cowardly leaders are dangerous and went on to stress the need for integrity in leadership.

Tunku Ismail’s message was premised on the teachings of his grandfather – the late Sultan Iskandar – who taught him that the supreme quality of leadership is integrity, which he believed to be a rare commodity.

“He also said that a cowardly leader is the most dangerous of men and that one of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognise a problem before it becomes an emergency.

“He also taught me that great leaders muster the courage to fulfil his vision from passion, not position,” the prince says in a posting on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page last night.

ERTI KEPIMPINAN

Ayahanda saya, Raja saya.

THE TRUE MEANING OF LEADERSHIP

My grandfather the late Sultan Iskandar used to say, the supreme quality of leadership is integrity. Unfortunately in today’s world, there is not much of this quality to be found.

He also said that a cowardly leader is the most dangerous of men, and that one of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency. He also taught me that great leaders musters the courage to fulfil his vision from passion, not position.

My advice to the leaders in every sector of government, NGOs and organizations in Johor is to lead and inspire the people. Do not try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed, but people must be lead by example and with integrity.

Remember that the key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. There is no point having authority if you cannot influence the people. If you have authority but command no influence, it is a sign that you are not worthy of being a leader.

It seems that things I say usually ruffle more than a few feathers, so I say in the context of Johor, which is close to my heart.

Last but not least, I am blessed to have been raised and taught by two great leaders, which is the late Sultan Iskandar, and Sultan Ibrahim. My father, my King.

Johor’s crown prince has reminded the country’s politicians that they serve the people, not the ideologies of their parties.

In a Facebook posting today, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim also urged them to set aside differences and respect one another even if they did not agree on every issue.

“Let us recognise that we do not serve an ideology of a political party; we serve the people,” the prince wrote.

‘Bad boy’ Johor prince crafts new image

Embedded image permalink

Just a year ago, Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was seen as a ‘bad boy’ of sorts. Previous reports of his alleged involvement in fights and confrontations had raised concerns that the prince may be living up to his predecessors’ reputations in that they were notorious for their run-ins with the law.

Fast forward to today and the ‘colourful’ history on Tunku Ismail now appears to be a matter of the past as netizens heap praise on the Johor prince for being a champion of the rakyat. Tunku Ismail has capitalised on the sliding popularity of Najib Abdul Razak by criticising the prime minister for his no-show at a 1MDB dialogue titled ‘Nothing2Hide’.

The entire episode turned out to be a public relations coup for the prince at the expense of Umno. The fact that the prince received military training at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, India and is now a “brigadier-general” in the Johor Military Force also helps to project a ‘macho’ image.

At only 30, Tunku Ismail made a whopping RM209 million by selling 9.23ha of prime land in Johor Bahru to a Singapore company. This single deal alone saw Tunku Ismail’s wealth grow to rival that of the 50th person in Forbes’ 2014 top 50 richest Malaysians list.

With his growing wealth and influence among the public, particularly Johoreans, Tunku Ismail is well-positioned to succeed his father as perhaps one of the most powerful and wealthiest sultans in the country. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/302886

JOHOR MESTI SENTIASA JADI JOHOR – BAHAGIAN 10
JOHOR MUST ALWAYS BE JOHOR – CHAPTER 10 The origins of the word Johor is derived from the Arabic word “Jauhar” meaning “Precious Jewel”. Johor was also known as The End of Land or ” Gangganu” by the Siamese, which means “Precious Stone “. The history of modern Johor began under the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar. Sultan Abu Bakar introduced the Johor Constitution which subsequently brought changes in the Johor Administration and it became more efficient. The transfer of the Government’s administration from Teluk Belanga to Tanjung Puteri in 1841 gave positive impact to Johor, especially , in terms of development. The construction of government buildings, police stations, mosques, Court and Grand Palace clearly proved that Sultan Abu Bakar deserved to be called the “Father of Development of Johor”. Today, Johor, which is bordered by Melaka, Pahang and Singapore, is one of the fast developing and advanced States in Malaysia. Hidup Johor Demi Johor ‪#‎KepadaAllahKamiBerserah‬

That ‘precious jewel’ called Johor

Since the spat between crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and a minister erupted, there have been a raft of social media postings whipping up Johor nationalism.

The latest is a posting on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page, which provided readers with a brief history lesson on the state. “The origins of the word Johor is derived from the Arabic word ‘Jauhar’ meaning ‘precious jewel’. Johor was also known as ‘the end of land’ or ‘Gangganu’ by the Siamese, which means ‘precious stone’.

JOHOR Southern Tigers Recently I noticed several negative and misinformed comments from some individuals about pictures of my boat which was uploaded by JOHOR Southern Tigers. There have always been several quarters who questioned the issue of the rakyat’s money. I therefore wish to use this space to give the correct and concise information which can be treated as useful knowledge in understanding the Johor royalty.

With regards to the rakyat’s monies which is questioned by these misinformed individuals, I am making this statement today so that Johoreans may read and understand so that they can inform future generations.

For everyone’s information, the Johor royalty had once breached the state constitution in 1899 when DYMM Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar had rejected his salary as Sultan which was allocated by the Johor state government at that time.

The funds were thus channelled to a trust fund now known as Yayasan Iskandar, whereby Almarhum then decreed “As Ruler of this state, I should not take my rakyat’s monies”.

Therefore the objective of that trust is for the state government to assist the Johor rakyat where needed. Till today, Yayasan Iskandar is used for funding education, Haj pilgrimages, upgrading facilities at religious schools etc. All proceeds and income of the Johor royalty is derived from rubber and oil palm estates since the time of DYMM Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim till today, which is now managed by MADOS.

All allowances allocated to me by the Johor government since I was appointed as the Raja Muda till today has been channelled to Yayasan Iskandar and whatever I have now are gifts from my own father. This information is mainly for giving a brief summary of the history of Johor royalty.

Once again, to those misinformed individuals, before making any sweeping statements, please do your research and get your facts correct first rather than embarrass yourselves later.

I am not worried as I have never taken anyone’s money.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Johor princess Tunku Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim has defended herself and her brother for a Starbucks coffee purchase criticised online, saying it was a well-deserved break as she joins in a lot of charitable activities benefitting her own state. In response to a question over her contributions and how her time is spent, the princess acknowledged that she does not contribute much to the country, but listed down her efforts to help the state’s residents. “Personally me alone I don’t do much for the country but I do a lot for my state. I visit children’s hospital and cheer them up with gifts without the media around, my family have our own kembara mahkota every year for our rakyat in need, we’re part of the red crescent that helps flood victims etc, and other charity events such as helping the old folks home, foster kids and disabled children,” she wrote using her official Instagram account tunku_tun_aminah four days ago. She went on to say that she does not use taxpayers’ money, citing a fast food outlet as her main income source. …
