SINGAPORE — Five gunshots were fired by two officers from the Gurkha Contingent at Mohamed Taufik Zahar when he attempted to evade police checks near the Shangri-La Hotel last May, and it was the fourth shot by the second officer that killed him.

Evidence given by the witnesses — including the Gurkha officers, the two passengers in Mohamed Taufik’s car, and a taxi driver — also pointed to the gunshots being fired after Mohamed Taufik’s car had crashed through concrete barriers at the Vehicle Check Station (VCS), set up as part of security measures for the Shangri-La Dialogue that day.

These evidence were presented this morning (Jan 26) at the Coroner’s Inquiry into the death of Mohamed Taufik on May 31 last year. In his opening statement, Second Solicitor-General Kwek Mean Luck said the officers from the Gurkha Contingent were deployed as part of the measures against the threat of vehicles carrying explosive devices, due to the high-profile Shangri-La Dialogue being held that weekend at the Shangri-La Hotel.

The officers, who formed the Vehicle Counter Assault Team, were to use “all lawful means” to prevent any vehicle from crashing through the VCS without clearing the checks.

According to the opening statement, Mohamed Taufik and his passengers — Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin and Mohamed Ismail — had been headed to Orchard Towers that morning to “look for girls”. They missed their turn into Claymore Hill, and took the next turn into Draycott Drive instead.

Approaching the VCS, they initially stopped as directed, but Syahid suddenly urged Mohamed Taufik to “Jalan! Jalan!” (“go, go” in English) and the car took off.

The two Gurkha officers had seen the car accelerating towards the final line of concrete barriers, and had walked towards the car with their weapons raised at shoulder-level, shouting “Police, stop!” repeatedly.

The car continued moving and turned left to approach the Shangri-La hotel and the surrounding residences. One Gurkha officer fired a shot at the driver, cracking the windshield, and the car veered to the left but did not stop.

The second Gurkha officer then fired two shots. When the car showed no signs of stopping, the officer fired two more shots. The car then slowed and came to a stop at the junction of Anderson Road and Orange Grove Road.

Syahid and Mohamed Ismail, who had tried to run away from the car, were arrested with drugs in their possession. Both also tested positive for drugs.

Earlier, Syahid had pleaded guilty to four charges: two counts of drug possession, one count of drug consumption and one count of abetting a rash act. Another four charges were taken into consideration during sentencing. He was sentenced to seven years’ jail and three strokes of the cane. Mohamed Ismail was sentenced to eight years’ jail and three strokes of the cane for drug possession and consumption.

The incident that made international headlines cost Ms Nassida the father of her young child. Yesterday, at her parents’ flat in Tampines, she told The Straits Times in a shaky voice about how she first met him in primary school, lost touch, but met again and started dating him two years ago.

Back then, Ms Nassida was a club dancer and Taufik worked as a nightclub bouncer.

Then their relationship turned serious. “We stopped partying and started staying at home to enjoy each other’s company,” said Ms Nassida.

She became pregnant last year and they got married two months ago, just after their daughter was born.

“He’s stubborn. We were prepared for him to go (to prison) for a year,” said Ms Nassida, referring to his offence of criminal intimidation.

After that, they planned to start a new life.
